Alyx's gun dissolves SMGs?

You'd just run out of ammo. Try impulse 101 in the Citadel, after you lose your weapons in Our Benefactors. How far can you get before you have to resort to the gravity gun?

Or the crowbar ;)

Well actually, you'd pickup the dead soldier's weapons for ammo.

And the super suit chargers could allow you to go on a crowbar rampage, if skilled enough.

V-Man on the dissolving guns

Apparentley you forgot what you just said, because you couldn't pick up their weapons because they disolve!
As for an in-universe explanation: the high amounts of dark energy coming from the gravity gun cause the guns to vaporize when it is used on something that's close enough to the point that it is holding it.

I thought the guy meant "If we were supposed to have weapons in the citadel"

Then valve wouldn't have created the gun dissolve state :hmph:

... The weapon stripper pulls the weapons out of your inventory, that's how it happens the first time. And no, Gordon fights no combinez before the confiscation field. The reason they dissolve is because the defense field (Somehow) breaks down unregistered weapons... I'm not sure how it missed alyx' gun though...

V-Man points out...

The reason it doesn't dissolve Alyx's gun is because she wasn't caught in the beam, she was outside the room's forcefield watching you.

Wait how was she weaponless before going into the citadel? She had it with her inside...

Actually. How did she get back her gun in EP1? Surely it was confiscated when she was captured. And IIRC she doesn't ever seem to have it in the final chapter of HL2. I guess the vortigaunts did it...or a wizard :p

Same thing goes for the Gravity Gun Dog gives to Gordon.

We forgot that Alyx has madd majjjic sckillzz, didn't we?

(Yes, I know I spelled those words wrong... Twas a joke.)

Plot Oversight!!11!1!1!11!1!!!1!!

Well it was in your hands when the reactor blew. I'm pretty sure it flew out of your hands as it exploded. G-Man took you, leaving the gun behind.

It's great how the question was answered by the third post, then the rest was just fingers-in-ears waffle and nonsense until a few posts ago.
I hate this thread so much.

Actually Chi, a theory was proposed by the third post.

True, though I previously just assumed that they dug it up near Gordon prior to finding him.

That could be, or Dog retrieved a "spare" Gravity Gun from somewhere. Could be the same thing for Alyx's gun, as it was certainly confiscated when she was captured.

The way I always saw it was that the citadel's soldiers carried weapons designed to disintegrate upon their death, so as to prevent civilians who were lucky enought to survive a raid on the citadel from gaining access to their own weapons in such an highly important building.

Oh, all it would have taken is one line of expository dialogue from Alyx to clear this up. Something like:

"Good thing the gravity gun is like that, Gordon. Combine weapons disintegrate when they're dropped in the Citadel, I'd have to all the fighting!"

Maybe a little over-expository, possibly that's why something like it didn't get in.

Lol, you people have strange sense of humor.

On the thread: The engineers currently develop a security sytem that would allow any modern weapon to be rendered useless if not in it's owner hands, by reading special chip integrated in the user's sleeve (as big as a button). If someone manages to steal the weapon from it's owner he wouldn't be able to operate it as it locks down. I heard this system is being developed because of the numerous occasions of policemen being shot with their own sidearms.

If modern scientist can do it, what about the combine...
