Hey guys i have a question..if i have a AMD at the moment and plan on getting a P4..do i have to buy new parts for the P4 motherboard? or can i use the ones i currently have

yes p4 have there motherboards land AMD has thers

You need a P4 compatible mobo. You cant just pop an AMD CPU into a P4 mobo.

So i'd be safe to buy a P4 with Hyper Threading and will be capable with the stuff thats equipped with my AMD?

I think he meant like Ram/Video Card I think, anyways those do not have to be replaced.

If you plan to salvage parts like your videocard and your hard drive, then that's ok.

Stuff that can be salvaged

videocard
sound card(if you have one)
disc drives (ie: HDD, CD-rom, floppy)
memory (only if your current memory is compatible with your P4 mobo)
all your IDE/Serial cables can be switched too.

Now if you have the moolah, I'd get some new parts...

Right, the only new things you would need is a P4 mobo and the P4 CPU. Everything else is universal.

hehe sorry but i dont know what a mobo is :) im thinkin of just buying a AMD Barton Chip to put into my AMD Athlon XP motherboard..would that work?

Motherboard - the mainboard that all your components connect to.

You will need to buy a P4 compatible motherboard along with your P4 CPU.

Sounds good...but was wondering if the AMD Barton Chip would go into my AMD Athlon Motherboard? Thanks! :)

What exactly is the make and model of the motherboard you want to put your AMD Barton CPU into?

hmmn sorry im kind of a noob to the numbers in my comp..where would i go to see the make and model?

Well if you were running an AMD chip in it before then yes that means it's an AMD bopard, the new AMD chip will run in it also. Unless of course it's old and only supports up to a certain MHz CPU. Check your motherboard's manual.

right on..just one more question...if i buy the barton chip..am i gonna need a special fan for it? or will the Athlon fan work just fine?

im sure u get the fans with the CPU... thats if its retail of course :)

But you will not get a good fan (boxed)

Take a look in some stores, get the name of the cooler, go to www.google.com and write *name of cooler* +review

And read about it :)

I'd get the CPU "OEM" (buying OEM saves some money and opens up a few more options for picking exactly what you want with no filler). But they'll be no manufacturer's warranty so make sure it has atleast a 30 day warranty with wherever you buy it from. Then you can get a good fan seperate. That way you can pick which one you want, maybe a nice Volcano 10. That's what i use for my AthlonXP 3000+, seems to be pretty good.

This kid is obviously not familiar with his computer. I'd recommend getting retail and just using the easy to install stock fan. He'll also have the warranty if it commits thermal death.

If you're going to get a Barton chip, you have to make sure your motherboard supports 400MHz Front Side Bus. Either find out the make and model of your board and check the manufacturers website, or check in the manual. If your board only supports 200MHz or 266Mhz FSB, then your Barton will not work.
