Someone sent me this link, I found it rather interesting page of statistics. I've heard several times in the last few months claiming America's incredible political power and ecomonic success is due to the greatly superior moral and religious values, or whatever.

Question is, is America really all that? hmm.

Before the flaming start, I am American, at least in that I am a citizen living within it's borders. However, I'm not very patriotic, and am not nationalistic.

oh my god

"Twenty percent of Americans think the sun orbits the earth. Seventeen percent believe the earth revolves around the sun once a day (The Week, Jan. 7, 2005). "

absolutely horrible ..really beyond words:

"The leading cause of death of pregnant women in this country is murder (CNN, Dec. 14, 2004). "

pathetic:

"Nearly one out of four Americans [believe] that using violence to get what they want is acceptable" (The European Dream, p.32)."

the bottom line:

"The USA is "No. 1" in nothing but weaponry, consumer spending, debt, and delusion"

Twenty percent of Americans think the sun orbits the earth. Seventeen percent believe the earth revolves around the sun once a day (The Week, Jan. 7, 2005).

I seriously hope this fact is misleading or fabricated... if not we're in trouble.

Although it does confirm to me that America isn't all that it is cracked up to be, you can find similarly embaressing statistics for any country.

Fact is, most of the people who read that are Americans, they will instinctively deny it, they will try to justify it, they will try to bring in examples of other countries shortcoming, they will do everything in their power to destroy the facts. We, as Americans are incapable of recognizing our own faults, we are bigoted and overwhelmingly ignorant. Sad fact is, that page is all truth and the response we are about to see simply reinforce that.

Not really. Our literacy is 49th, any country we like to equate ourselves is far better, same with mathematics. Same with most of those. If you can find those facts, please do.

Not like I didn't know this...I know Amerca is a shithole and is gonna be gone in 20 years, which is why I need to move to Canada.

I doubt I'd find any similar statistics for other nations seeing as how it's America that tends to face the end of the world's anger. :\

I'm just saying that any country could be put into a negative light with such statistics. Also, the United States is one large and diverse country. The kind of intelligence displayed by a huge chunk of idiots in some locations do not reflect every state.

but how do they know thats for sure? did they ask EVERYONE in the United states on science and mathematic questions? .. heh dont think so.. /me thinks its a lame poll.

how does this "European Dream" know so much?...

theres a chance it could be true, theres a chance it could be false.

hahaha, it wont be gone, but it'll be far from number 1 in anything

They always come up with these silly statistics. Wasn't it about a month ago when 40% of Japanese kids didn't know what planet they live on or something? Give me a break.

As to the literacy and other issues, Most countries don't have to deal with mass immigration like the US and a few others. Legal immigration in Canada is killing the literacy statistic here (one of the few countries that actually takes immigrants). I can't immagine what 1 million per year illegal aliens from 3rd world countries, plus all the legal ones, do to these type of figures.

Way to address one fact from a list of 50.

I've seen some of that European Dream stuff before, it's quite scary if you think about it.

I think between my two points I address about every so called "statistic" on the list, so I fail to see your point here.

those 20% of americans that think the sun orbits the earth, might they be kids? or not american? or mentally disabled?

im being serious. no offence intended, obviously.

I bet there is not a lot of difference between the USA and other countries for things like that. I'd like to see the statistics for other countries as well. A lot of the Moorisms statistics he used to show how stupid Americans were, turned out to be about the same as other countries, or with the USA being better in some instances.

I can find people in the white pages whose name is also Michael Moore, and average people with homepages called Michael Moore, and say 'Oh you mean THAT Michael Moore from Boisie Idaho!' Hilarious.

The biggest Superman of all is Michael Moore on factchecking. Well Superman after about 20 years worth of burgers.

The reason we have this extreme lower class of idiots is because, unlike the rest of europe, we have consistently throughout our history had the ultra-low class of people. They used to be black 'slaves' (after emancipation) under the jim crow laws. European countries have never had this class to support. Most of those are just a crock of shit, I mean who cares? Doesnt bother my ass what some random person on the street thinks about god or how the sun orbits. I would imagine that most of those are the same in just about any country.

The reason our healthcare rating is so low is because the WHO wants to push socialized healthcare, and America doesnt want its citizens waiting in line 6 months for basic healthcare.

The problems in our education suck though, we have the laziest students on earth. I'm 17 I feel I'm pretty intelligent... one of the relatively few success stories of our public education.

Not like it matters, this nation of dumbasses will still beat the shit out of any of yours.

I should say, that I do believe America is the best country in the world to live. And I am an Australian. If I could have stayed in the United States I would have, and hope to go back to San Diego California before I get to old.

Are you a marine that went on float and never came back?

Sorry about the OT

no its really quite simple. The pollsters go to a public place and interview real americans.

Pollster: You there, do you wanna take a survey?
American: No habla ingles.
Pollster: Thats great, now fill this out?
American: Que
Pollster: Here just bubble in. Here let me show you.
American: Oh, si. Yo entiendo.

Yeah... I love America! *puts on a good song and blows shit up*

Bush: 62,027,582 votes. Kerry: 59,026,003 votes. Number of eligible voters who didn't show up: 79,279,000 (NYT, Dec. 26, 2004). That's more than a third. Way more. If more than a third of Iraqis don't show for their election, no country in the world will think that election legitimate.
I really only bothered to check out this one. Its obviously just being used to make the U.S. look worse than it actually is when you consider only 61% of Canadians voted in our last federal election.

But I have seen a few recent surveys saying Scandinavia has the best quality of life.

Actually Ireland scored pretty well, for some reason... I am puzzled.

Try this one for example:

Although that's not the one I was thinking of.

Meh, I always suspected Britain was a bit shite.

And the UN said Norway was the best to live, but I can't find that source right now.

I can find the 2 years ago article though:

Ah well I'll take your word for it. Never actually been before, even though I've been all over the world, and it's just across the water.
I think I have a small percentage of blood from there too.

I'm just put off by my lecturer, who is the most evil man alive, and Irish.

I've been invited to a good night out in Dublin this summer though.

Norway was followed by Sweden, Canada, Belgium, Australia and the US - but the bottom of the chart is dominated by African countries.

Way to go Canada!

Wow only Iceland, Switzerland, and Austria of the top 15 countries in 2002 have gone up in value. Every other former top 15 country has dipped down. What happened?

EDIT: AntiAnto those were the 2002 figures. Apparently Canada has slipped to 14th.

gah, the U.K. sucks major. I want to move.

God I hate this country.

Nope nothing like that. I was an attorney in the californian office of an international law firm. I lost my job there, and hence my visa. I was unsuccesful in obtaining other work in the USA, conservative law firms being deeply suspicious of foreigners who had somehow managed to pass the bar exam and have not been to a US law school.

So back in Australia. Never in the marine corps. Although I attempted to enlist in the US Army after I lost my job in the beginning of 2003. They thought they could do it, even though I was not a US citizen nor had a greend card, but would take a lot of paperwork. I could not stick around that long, and had to leave when I was out of status.

ireland has a booming economy now - so a lot of good opportunities. Weather still sux tho. I've got an Irish passport (around here somewhere....) but never actually been to the place

Aside from the weather which you cant change, I have heard that crime is a really big problem in the UK now, both anecdotally and by seeing statistics coming out putting UK cities high up there on crime lists for Europe.

Bet its not higher than the U.S. ^^

Ooh! Free money! I'd be glad to take that bet. How much do you want to pay me?

Shoulda been more clear, the US has a higher number of crimes, as well as the highest level of incarceration in the world. Also most murders, im not talking about bike theft :dozey:

im not talking about bike theft

England has a higher number of violent crimes and property crimes as well I believe, so which crimes are you referring to?
