The US military has given the first public display of what it says is a revolutionary heat-ray weapon to repel enemies or disperse hostile crowds.

Called the Active Denial System, it projects an invisible high energy beam that produces a sudden burning feeling.

LoL, Dune II sonic tanks ftw!!
And wtf is going on with that corny name "Active Denial System" whoever wrote that must be retarded. Let me rename it. hmm, what better name than "Sonic Tank". Nice and short, and pwns a lot more than "Active Denial Tank" or anything similar :P

Good news is this is a non-lethal way of controlling crowds and/or your mother in law.

.

Well first off it's not a sonic weapon, and second from that picture it looks like a modified hummer of sorts, so it's not a tank either.

So, a really interesting question is, if this is indeed a microwave weapon wouldn't it fry any electronic equipment that is unfortunate enough to be in that beam?

Faraday cage > microwave weapon

These things could malfunction in some pretty ****ed up ways, I reckon.

I think "heat ray" sounds better than all those names.

Now let's haul it over to Horsell Common and start ripping shit up :D

Faraday cage > microwave weapon

that wouldn't help you if using such a device. it's waves not electron discharge.

anyway this is so old. the microwaves are designed to penetrate few millimeters under the skin to cause minor inside burns. this is not a sonic weapon. a sonic weapon is already used today by the US police to disperse crowds. it creates an irritating sound so people would disperse.

edit: ok, i'm not entirely sure how a faraday cage effects on microwaves.

edit2: emm, it does...ups...sorry bout that!

@Remus,
Oeps, yeah your right, didn't see that ;)
Still, the current name they've given it blows, then give it a cooler name, like "Microwave Hummer" :P

I am foreseeing a LOT of accidents with this.

"Hey Bob, could you heat up my burger?"
"No prob"
"OH DEAR GOD THE PAIN"
"IT'S NOT SHUTTING DOWN D:"

Hahah, this came to mind while reading that LOL

"Gordon, get away from, the beam!!"
"Shutting down.... attempting shut down..."
"IT'S NOT.... IT'S NOT SHUTTING DOWN!!! .... BLEARGHHH!!!!... *BOOM* "

Ahh yes I read this in the Metro this morning. I thought it's more like a C&C Generals microwave tank, amirite? (accept without a visable beam). Great idea, let's hope they don't get similar technology in SK, if you know what I mean...

Cooking people from 500 meters away. Only Americans.

Then we would have to get off of our fat asses to get it. Ovens work much better.

i was just wondering what would happen if they turned up its power i mean REALLY turned it up, how would it effect ppl then??????

Gravity gun anyone?

Come on, tell me I wasn't the only lazy bugger grabbing health packs and ammo from across the room just cause I could :E

TURKEY GET! *zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzip*

I could've swore I saw this exact topic several months ago.

Not to worry, the Human Rights Commssion tends to ban everything that has 'pain' and 'expensive' in its discription.

yes because god ****ing forbid a human rights commission rules against instruments of pain :upstare: ..it's like you just fell off the turnip truck or something

oh look it has a kill switch

Critics cite that although the stated intent of the ADS is to be a non-lethal device designed to temporarily incapacitate, easy modifications or incorrect use by the operator could turn the ADS in to a torture device that would violate international conventions on warfare.

I saw about that in the history channel

btw now soldiers can heat up the pizza

soldier:*holds pizza*"heat it up jimmy"
operator:*turn on*"hey dude some sparks are coming from your grenades
soldier:"wha cant hear...."*booom..splarg*
operator:"oh...shi"*turn on engine and leave*

Yeah smartest thing ever: grenades + microwave :rolling:

not unlike actual ads

I always found international conventions on warfare interesting, since, in the end, its not like warfare could ever be made less brutal and inhuman than it is.
"tally-ho chap, lets shoot this thing so the enemy doesn't die, otherwise we're not being nice" :P

they're not about limiting killing each other ..it's all about preventing things like torture/war crimes ...most came after the nuremberg trials as a consequence of the holocaust

there needs to be rules of engagement or countries can pretty much invade whomever they want .....oh wait

Rules of engagement =/= invasion laws

no but the geneva accords covers invasion/oocupation ..it also governs what you can and cant do on the battlefield ..so you're correct when it's not the same thing but try to look at the bigger picture, we're not talking about individual soldiers

dont think the USA will closely follow that

This is such a C&C generals weapon.

I'm just waiting for Russia or China to make an overpowered version which actually sets people on fire.
