So I've started to gain an interest in anime again...right now I'm making my way through death note...anyone got some suggestions of other series/movies to follow up on?

Thanks for that suggestion, I checked out a couple of clips on yt and it looks great. Any others? Also, for future reference I've already seen the classics (akira, gits,..etc.) and I ****in hate naruto.

Elfen Lied perhaps.
Only if you're into Nekos, lots of limbs flying everywhere, lots of breasts, blood, and a storyline that goes nowhere.

Oh wait, what's the average age of this forum again?

I've already seen the classics
akira, gits

If you're enjoying Death Note, then Code Geass is the other obligatory anime to watch.

Sure is Adult Swim and shitty suggestions in this thread. Death Note, FMA, Code Gayass, Elfen Lied was almost picked up by AS because Kim Manning's a fan of it. Why don't you all just suggest Inuyasha while you're at it? ADULT SWIM IS NUMBER ONE FOR ANIMU!

Fucking shitty suggestions.

yes yes we all know you like POKEMON but no I hate that shit...yea yea fist of the northstar, did you not see the "...etc." or do you just like to shit all over everything I do? Like a shitting stalker you lay and wait to troll every thread I make. Every step I take. Any other suggestions darkside except school girls being tentacle raped by pokemon?
Also I've been checkin out:
hajime no ippo
ichi the killer
utawarerumono (looks interesting)

EDIT: as far as whether I like death note...it was really interesting at first...but I don't know..I guess I'm just stickin with it, L is probably the most retarded character I've seen in an anime in awhile.

Za warudo?

And Miike's a douche. I don't see the appeal of Ichi.

I loved the movie ichi the killer, I haven't had the time to sit down with the anime yet though...never heard of za warudo...

Za warudo
Listen up, you lowly human scum. I am the greatest and best thing you will ever have the pleasure of watching. All other anime is shit compared to me. All other forms of animation is shit compared to me. All other manga, comics, printed media of any kind is inferior to me!

Listen well! There is a limit to how far anime and manga can go! In order to surpass this limit, I have rejected my humanity! I will stand on top of all living things! I am now a new creature that cuts open the future!

OHHHH jojo's bizarre adventure?? okay now I know what your talkin about, definitely checkin this out.
EDIT: darkside has no sense of humour

Yes he does, it's just usually very referential and I get it only most of the time.

The humour is beyond me--sarcasm?
Plus I can't read katakana.

darkside has no sense of humour
Still you insult me! But even in this critical moment, you're still only human. "Sarcasm?" "Sense of humor?" These kinds of thoughts will get you killed! I have no such thoughts. Order, conquest! These are the only ideals I uphold! The process or methods...

DON'T REALLY MATTER!

I never watched/read Phantom Blood. I'm one of the Stardust fags. :|

Although, anything with Dio is automatically cool, regardless...

Bah, Stardustfag. :p

That explains why you didn't understand what I wrote. It says, "Furueru zo haato! Moetsukiru hodo hiito!" It's Jonathan's final attack. Shivering heart! Burning heat! SUNLIGHT YELLOW OVERDRIVE! The power of the sun!

I should make a Jojo's thread in Fanfiction and Reading. It's seriously the greatest piece of fiction ever. Eastern, Western, new or old, who cares about that? Jojo no Kimyou Na Bouken beats everything. There simply is nothing greater in this world and all our lives are enriched by its existence. I'm dead serious too. I never understood how pathetically empty my life was until Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.

Yeah it changes a lot of people's lives apparently:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVs-4dPVmIk

And that isn't to say I haven't read about the series.

I'd read parts 1-2 as well, but Battle Tendency just doesn't seem interesting to me--the whole New York thing.

And reading the synopsis of post-rage Jotaro, the series seems to get DBZ syndrome: who has the better [strike]power level[/strike] stand? How many ways can we have more epic fights?

Also Steel Ball Run seems just :|

Whatever you've been reading about the series...all those things you said are dead wrong.

Battle Tendency...Battle Tendency is...*choking back tears*...BATTLE TENDENCY IS THE GREATEST PART OF JOJO'S BIZARRE ADVENTURE! On a scale of 10, it's an 11! Caesar...you...you are the greatest character in JJBA! CAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAEEEEESAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR!

And what you read about DBZ is completely untrue. In fact, I love Diamond is Unbreakable far, far more than Stardust Crusaders. It's brilliant. The great thing about it (as well as Golden Wind and Stone Ocean) is that it isn't the more powerful stand that wins, it's the person who is more clever or has a better grasp of their stand's abilities. I don't know where you heard about DBZ from, but whoever said those words need to be slapped. That's why this series is so great; it defies your typical shounen bullshit, power-creep-to-win scenarios. And listen...Stone Ocean? Stone Ocean has one of the most mind-blowing endings to a series I have ever read.

Also, Steel Ball Run, I'll admit this to you: someone once told me the gist of SBR, including some spoilers, and I said to them, "That sounds stupid." But the way it was described to me was basically JJBA with horses. That sounded stupid. But after Stone Ocean's ending, I wanted to see the events of SBR.

Holy shit. I mean, holy shit. Ask me the reason I'm dropping $200+ to own a figure of Gyro Zeppeli. Good God, this series is fuckawesome. Also, when Ringo Roadagain shows up, prepare to jizz in your pants. Ringo, you are the most awesome character ever, and you travel down the path of a TRUE MAN.

So I've started to gain an interest in anime again...right now I'm making my way through death note...anyone got some suggestions of other series/movies to follow up on?
If you like Death Note, watch Code Geass, its basically Death Note with Gundams and a different kind of ability (not a notebook).

@ Darkseed:

OK... so... I'll read it?

Your passion is frightening.

And the DBZ thing was just my own interpretation. Crazy Diamond's 'lol heal' ability just seemed to be ott from the synopsis.

Crazy Diamond's ability is really great. It's not exactly "healing;" it's "I can rearrange your physical structure." Whatever he breaks, he can repair or alter it. It's one of my favorite stands, and Josuke is actually Hirohiko Araki's favorite character that he created.

If you wanted a better candidate for a DBZ-powered stand...Gold Experience Requiem and Made in Heaven. They're ridiculous powerful.

Gainax's apology for Evangelion, Tengen-Toppa Gurren-Lagann, is pretty GAR.

Darkseid, is GaoGaiGar any good? I hear it's like TTGL.

Do you want to know the power of COURAGE? Then watch GaoGaiGar.

Elfen Lied.

Full Metal Alchemist.

Ghost in the Shell.

Other than these 3, I've never really enjoyed anime. Too inane.

^ You may like Darker Than Black, Full Metal Panic, Death Note, Code Geass, and just for border inanity's sake, Golden Boy.

I do not understand why everyone keeps suggesting Geass. It wasn't good. The only part that could be considered 'OK' was the ending. It's like Geass has become the "latch on" anime of the season; you know, the anime that one person watches and declares it's good by word of mouth, and everyone else latches onto it and recommends it to others. It wasn't a good anime. Right now I'm watching Excuse to Look Cool, and even with its shitty no-story and terrible pacing it's more enjoyable than Gayass.

The most popular anime out in each season aren't guarantees of its quality, people. Just because you hear Geass everywhere you go does not make it a good series. In fact, it's not even the season for Geass anymore. It's the season for Basquash. Also maybe Queen's Blade.

Geass is freaking awesome!! *points to avatar*

I recommend the following anime, have a look at them on wiki and see what ones interest you:

azumanga daioh
code geass (2nd best anime ever made IMO)
ghost in the shell
higurashi no naku koro ni
elfen lied
school rumble
fullmetal alchemist
neon genesis evangelion (best anime ever made IMO)
cowboy bebop
hellsing
black lagoon
gunslinger girl
monster

I'm also currently watching paranoia agent, serial experiments lain and flcl (all of them are weird as hell though so I don't recommend them to you for now)

and yes be warned elfen lied is violent as all hell.

utawarerumono (looks interesting)

You do know what that is right? Just checking.

EDIT: Actually we need an anime board :(

Underwater Ray Romano is shit. Enjoy your eroge.

the rest of Bluehair's list
I hate this list. I see this list everywhere, in some form or another. It's one of those lists that can be spouted by newbieeaboos (I just came up with that; I'm coining that shit) or neckbeards alike. It's one of those lists that's got all the "well-known" animu on it, and only well-known shit...even if it is, in fact, shit. It's one of those lists that's like,

"Hey do you like anime?"
"No sir I do not care for the anime."
"Well you must be watching all the wrong things! You should watch

EVANGELION
and COWBOY BEBOP
and you might like ELFEN LIED
or HIGURASHI NO NAKU KORO NI
but it's kind of bloody and freaky so if you don't like that you might want to watch AZUMANGA DAIOH because it's a cute comedy about schoolgirls
but if action's more your style you should check out HELLSING
but if you don't like vampires or the supernatural watch GHOST IN THE SHELL, it's a masterpiece"

The only thing I never see on that list that you mentioned is School Rumble. Fuck that list. Bluehair I am disappoint. I would've expected a guy with an animu avatar to recommend GOOD anime. The only good thing on that entire list is Azu. Yeah, you heard me. ONLY AZU.

Listen folks, it's April of 2009. The new season of anime just started. Watch some fucking new shit and stop relying on Adult Swim to tell you what you like.

Here is a lineup.

1239537622514.jpg

Highlights include a new Cobra OVA, a series from the 1970s that none of you young punks have ever heard about. It's a ROCK OPERA in SPACE with a motherfucking SPACE PIRATE ADVENTURER.

There's Basquash!, which is about kids who pilot giant robots to play basketball. Giant robots. Playing basketball. Has your mind exploded from the coolness of that concept yet? Have your eyes goggled out of your head and your pants become wet with jizm? This is the appropriate response for ROBOTS PLAYING BASKETBALL.

There's Queen's Blade, based off the visual game-thingy. This anime is absolute SHIT, but at least there's tits.

For all you people who said FMA, there's going to be a faithful manga translation done by Bones. First two eps are out and the animation is meh. I wouldn't bother unless you're a fan.

There's an anime based off Valkyria Chronicles. There's a prequel to Anne of Green Gables (super awesome). They're reviving Beyblade. You don't like Beyblade? Fuck you.

Shangri-La will suck. K-ON is moe shit. East of Eden...probably shit. Sengoku Basara has an interesting art style but the fights are dick. Guin Saga promo looked like shit. Ristorante Paradiso...might be OK, actually. You're going to watch Lupin vs. Detective Conan because it's LUPIN and CONAN. Do you need any other reason? There is a new Mazinger. Do any of you even know who Mazinger is?! Look at all the NEW stuff coming out!

So in summary, this season I will only be watching Jewel Pets. It will be the most awesome anime of our time and if you don't agree your opinion is forfeit. FUCK YEAR, JEWEL PETS.

yes it may be seen as a noob list but just like you said it's easy to recommend to people who are not into anime. You can criticise it but just because it's popular but that doesn't mean ghost in the shell or cowboy bebop are crap. I don't want to get complicated and recommend other things like say monster or mushi-shi or some really obscure stuff. Kay yahtzee? I mean samon...wait...darkside, that's the one.

And the only new anime I'm watching this season are FMA season 2, Hayate no gotoku season 2 and the higurashi ovas. I've got a bunch of other anime I want to watch I haven't seen before like serial experiments lain, paranoia agent, air, sola and other stuff.

Dude, if you recommended Monster, people might actually walk away thinking, "Hey, anime/manga can have some incredible and rooted stories. Looks like I was wrong and it wasn't all just giant robots and super powers and big-eyed girls who are pedobait. This Monster series proves that anime is simply a medium for storytelling like books, film, or video games, and doesn't always have to be formulaic GARBAGE."

This is why I hate that goddamned list so very much. You want Evangelion? Here's your Eva, I HAVE UPGRADED IT WITH A BETTER ANIME:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mwx4ZsIUeTA

Yeah well for a noob I'm not willing to recommend monster especially considering it is SO ****ing long it can put some people off.

Also BTW I've never ever watched adult swim :P

I don't understand that reasoning, to be honest with you. If you recommend something that's good, the length should never be a problem. Imagine the same reasoning applied to novels:

"I'd recommend Crime and Punishment, but it's a very long book. Instead you might want to look into See Spot Run and decide if you're interested in books based off this series."

or video games:

"I'd recommend you an RPG, but it might take you 60 hours to play. Instead you should play this game of minesweeper set to five squares and one mine."

You should go ahead and recommend good things even if they're long. If people get put off by its length to hell with them; they aren't good enough to watch/read it.

You know how long JJBA is? TWENTY FIVE YEARS OF MANGA, STILL ONGOING. And I read all of that shit on a whim in like a week. To hell with length.

Fair enough but it is still a reasonable point IMO for someone not into anime really.

Monster is a good show to watch, no an excellent show to watch.

I'll edit the above list too.

Lack of Darkside seeing Baccano is disturbing.

I don't see how any of those other suggestions are going to get someone INTO anime in order to watch Monster at all.

You know, this reminds me of a story. 11 years ago, when I was a freshman in highschool, I went to an anime club. I'd never been to an anime club before. I'd watched/read a couple things...I'd read Lensman, and read/watched Ranma. (collecting the old Viz comics and watching Nihao My Concubine as a kid, fuck year) But I hadn't seen TOO much anime in my day. So, first day of anime club I pop in the door, take a seat, and listen to them discuss what anime they're going to watch this year.

I boldly suggested an anime I'd heard of called "Evan-jeh-lie-on." To which I was met with snickers and people whispering the correct pronunciation. I was outvoted by an anime called FUSHIGI YUUGI. When I asked what that is, someone quipped, "The best anime you've never heard of."

God bless those guys for outvoting my shitty, newbieaboo suggestion.

We later went on to watch bootleg VHS's of Escaflowne.

Goddamn that club was cool.

Yes I am also in an anime club and kinda know what you are talking about. I am no master expert of anime and may not know as much obscure stuff as you but it's pretty obvious I really like it.

I don't see why you are still persecuting my choice of anime which is pretty good for newbies to get into, most of the shows I recommended where some of the first I watched.

I don't see how any of those other suggestions are going to get someone INTO anime in order to watch Monster at all.

Everyone else seems in this topic seems to have closely echoed it though. And I'm sure others here have watched monster.

PS Even I knew that wasn't how you pronounced evangelion :P
PPS Cos you keep calling me bluehair maybe I should change my avatar back...idk :|

Naw, keep your avatar. I just like calling you Bluehair instead of Birdeye. It sounds cooler. Plus, you know Strongbad's stance on anime: "You gotta have blue hair."

I'm not trying to persecute you, personally, for your choice. It's just that...if you look at this thread, it's all Death Note and Geass, Fullmetal and Elfen Lied. Only Jintor apparently agrees with me about Eva and only Vegeta posted something different (Baccano). There's a lot of classics that aren't being mentioned and a lot of good, new stuff that's being overlooked.

And I really do see those anime listed so much in anime suggestion threads, I just hate them all. Even anime that I liked that I see on those lists...I liked FMA and I thought Elfen Lied was...watchable. I just don't want to hear about them any more. Where are all the awesome shows that nobody ever mentions? Why's no one ever talked about Captain Harlock or Akagi? Dirty Pair or Ai Yori Aoshi? Gunbuster or Fruits Basket? Record of Lodoss War or Slayers? Urusei Yatsura or 2x2=Shinobuden? Jungle wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu or Tekkaman Blade? Gundam or Gunsmith Cats? Mai Otome or Gankutsuou? Cyborg 009 or Macross? Rurouni Kenshin or Hunter x Hunter?

There are countless incredible series out there that I haven't even touched on, but everybody only wants to tell people about Evangelion, Death Note, Code Geass and Cowboy Bebop. To hell with ALL those series; watch Tenchi Muyo and Space Runaway Ideon.
