Slap me if there's already a thread on this, but does anyone know how long it might take till Episode 3 is released?

Considering Ep 1 and 2, early 2009 is probable.

Early-mid 2008. Valve have already been working on the base of the story and game since the start of development for ep1. Therefore it is likely that they have a decent starting point.

I would say mid 2008 or early 2009 it depends on how many times they have to redesign the game to be happy with it.

I'm not really concerned with the release date at the moment but what I really want now is some ep3 media.

Honestly, early-mid 2008 isn't that bad. I could really wait that long.

Early or mid 08 would be perfect. This episode based system wont work if we have to always wait 1,5 years. Yeah I know its good to have fine and complete game but when first ep was relased, they hyped episode based relase system to be revolutionary. What we had now? 1,7 year waiting, few delays and expensive "Box" (Ok there are other games, but its still nasty price for just one game).

Early 2008ish, Ep1 didnt take 1.5 years to complete, because they were originally going straight to HL3 but couldnt be bothered nd wanted to expand the stroyline, ep2 just got delayed because of its friends 'The Orange Box' and theyve said ep3 is already far in development, Spring to early Summer 2008, i say, well i hope...

And i'm sort of against seeing episode 3 media, because that will make me want it more, but my brain is hungry for more HL2...

Mid 2008 or late 2008, I don't care. I can wait, since I have much games to play.
And I do want a few pictures of EP3 and a trailer.

1,5 years for an episode makes 4,5 years for the entire game :eek:Giving that they use the same engine as HL2, same weapons, 1 or 2 new monsters and the story is writen, that's very long period. Games are great but Valve lied us about the advantages of the episodic system. It is only a marketing trick. I hope I am wrong and Ep3 will be here mid 2008 :)

But HL2 was also an engine! For the episodes you are only creating maps and scripts.

And gameplay concepts. And new models. And new AI. And new engine updates. And gameplay testing. And new enemies.

what most of you are forgetting is that episode 3 is being made by the team that did episode 1. They've had a year and a half since they shipped Ep1. We'll be seeing Episode 3 holiday of 08, at the latest.

Many of the developers of Episode 1 were also developers on Episode 2, in major enough roles to have commentary in both commentary tracks.

Although some of the creative work is run in tandem, a lot of work has to happen sequentially. Valve's design work is heavily dependent on early playtesting and by gauging reaction from earlier episodes. Both of those meant having to wait until Ep2 was released before decisions for Ep3 could be made. (The reactions of a playtester who has played Ep2 might well be different from someone who has not; so some of that early design-testing has to wait until they have a pool of playtesters who've played Ep2 in close to its final form.)

Awww man.. Episode 1 wasnt nearly as good :( So does that meat that 3 isnt going to be as good as 2.

Good point i never thought of that.

Ep 1 may have been less of an experience compared to Ep 2, but that may be more related to the storyline than any shortcomings of the devs. They could only do so much in the evacuation from City 17. Once out, the game opened up into the more 'epic' feeling of Episode 2. I have a feeling Ep 3, with the Borealis and the conclusion of the trilogy will be quite rewarding.

That, and the Ep 1 and Ep 2 teams are not as separate as you think. After all, they have one thing in common - Laidlaw. He's the writer. :)

I think we'll see Episode 3 on the 10th anniversary of the release of Half Life. (October or November 2008.... i forget)

Waiting requires about as much effort as growing a mustache.

Hello? It's called not shaving. Woah, that's a tough one.

-I enjoy you.

On topic, I am hoping it's December 2008/January 2009.

If we are going to be in the arctic, I want to already be in that mood. Just like how it's better to watch The Thing in the winter.

Maybe they will have it at the 10 yr anniversary of HL1

^^^ screw winter. We don't get winter here in SoCal! Just give us the damned game!!! hehe.
