anyone with theories of the release??

i am just wondering if anyones got any theories on the release on valve, i know there are some pretty smart guys here who have a idea of what going on.

i have a theory. hl2 will be released at some point, and when it is announced we will be told how when and where to get it.

I think they are fighting like hell to get it out by the 30th, but playtesting/tweaking is taking longer than antisipated and they arent going to make it.


another theory: the game is done but they dont want to call it gold untill they think steam can take the pressure of thousands of people downloading hl2, and they know it cant yet.

I think the game will be delayed. How Long? I don't know mayBEE a few days MayBEE a couple months. Giving that Half-Life 2 would have to go Gold between September 13-15 and then shipped to stores, by now (1 week laters) people would know if it's Gold or not. SOme people at stores would take copies from the back room. (They always do. Places like Software ETC, and GameStop) Since nothing like that has occured it's pretty safe to say that the game did not go Gold therefore will not make the September 30th release. Why is Valve not mentioning the Delay? MayBEE they are not sure how long the delay will be for so they Can't mention the delay until they have a firm date of when the game can actually be released.

I think they are doing this intentionally... I mean just look at this... everywhere on every forum people are like "Do you know if it's delayed"... everyone are talking about the game... This is amazing "free" publicity. At this rate they hardly need to worry about advertising the game... it's advertising it self. They got people coming every day on pages like these to see if there is a gold announcement or a delay announcement... IMO they are just exciting the crowds before they unveil their masterpiece!!

no no NO. nobody with any training in marketing would ever do anything like that. theres something fishy going on.

Ok, here's my theory, it's a bit elaborate:

Half-life2 is done, it's been done for a while. The guys are only playtesting to make sure it is the best thing to come to the PC in a long time, maybe ever. They have deliberately been keeping quiet about the gold announcement. There is going to be an annoucement by ATI and Valve tomorrow (Monday). This annoucement is to officialy launch the Radeon 9800xt and to announce that Half-life2 has been completed and will be in stores on the 30th. ATI will release a special edition of the 9800xt that includes Half-life2 and maybe a few other goodies. Meanwhile, the game CDs and DVDs are being pressed as we speak and boxed up for retail.


There you have it. That is my theory. I guess we will know tomorrow if this is accurate or not. Oh well.


*edit* Oh and Half-life2 will be launched on Steam on the 30th. Whether the servers can handle it or not. Valve wants Steam to be huge, but I don't think they are going to jeopardize the release date that they have stuck with all of these months.

I think they're purposely keeping the gold announcement under wraps, just like they've kept the whole game under wraps. spitcodfry didn't see and testing or working going on, and he gave me the impression that the offices weren't all too crowded. If a dev is nearing a release this close, there would be unshaved, unshowered people sitting around and soda cans littering the ground. I'd say its done.

Any Mafia fans here? Illusion Softworks and Gathering never made an official gold announcement, and the game was still released. I hope Valve is doing the same thing here. It's all about PR and tweaking people's feelings/minds. Valve is masterful at that, and they aren't conventional developers.

they had to snap kids in the neck to stop them from trying to get it early, it was a world wide release...

Not if they're just finishing up playtesting. Which Valve is doing.

I'm guessing that when spitcodfry was there, the game was still under development. But now, who knows if they're still not gold yet?

Here's my theory, though it's just some ideas, and i don't actually think it's true. It's just what i entertain in my mind. Valve was actually finishing up the game around when spitcodfry went to go see them. they are working on code and sending snippets of code over to VU games, who have their release candidate from about a week or two ago. In order to prepare everyone who plans to order the game on Steam for subscriptions or what have you, they will make an announcement about Steam, and perhaps HL2 on monday.

If they don't, then i can't imagine that anything will happen in time. It's already too weird. I have a hard time stomaching a release with this little publicity.

They are concentrating on ironing out Steam bugs. HL2 is almost done.
