I still wouldn't be surprised, OFPDR, another big military shooter that just came out, does not feature dedicated server support for users, only dedicated servers can be run by Codemasters.

Yeah and the game is pretty much dead online because of it from what I've seen.

Nah, I don't do much multiplayer TBH, tried TF2 but it didn't grab me. The only multi games I have ever played consistently are the original AvP at which I was a ****ing god, which got riuned by the crappy MP in the sequel and Left 4 Dead.
Are you getting it for the PC or the 360? I usually get my COD for the 360 for some odd reason. Not sure why, but I downloaded COD4 from my friend's Steam account and tried it on computer, then I rented it for the 360, and I just liked it more on there. Anyway, I had fun playing it on there, and if you get it and have a 360, you should totally message me to play.
I'm also mainly getting it for the SP/SpecOps, which is either/or.

You can message me on the 360 if you ever want to play. Shamrock013... That is if you are getting it for that as well. Haha.

But Stemot, you should at least give this one's a chance. Not saying it like, "JUST ****ING DO IT." More of a, "Hey, I think last one's was good, and this one is just a gigantically improved version so maybe you should try it this time! :)" Haha. It might take you a little bit to get hooked, but you definitely start to fall for the MP portion of it. I have COD5, and all I've done was play MP. I played a few SP missions, but it felt so lacking there.

Yeah, there's no way I'm buying this anymore.

Seriously, what the hell are they thinking? The fact that they've gone out of their way to completely gimp the online play and charge extra for the privilege is pretty ****ing low. IW have extended a pretty clear '**** you' to the PC community by doing this, while ensuring the game will be completely dead online in practically no time at all.

Yeah, i'll add you sometime. Imma need a partner for SpecOps mode. :p

It jumped like 70 signatures in 20 seconds. :O

I'll be getting it on PC as it's £20 cheaper than the 360 version and I'll benefit from being able to run it in higher res's etc etc.
If they don't completely fubar the PC multi support I may give it a whirl, but that'll only be after I have finished the Single Player.
I do recognise that CoD 4 is supposed to be an amazing game online and have no doubt it is but I suck so badly at twitch based shooters online. I will more than likely give it a go though :).

seriously, why people care about this generic shooter so much

Because it's a very well designed, highly polished and competitive MP shooter with infinite modability and a very flexible server/client structure. The core game may be generic but if Modern Warfare was any indicator the community turns it into something else entirely.

Except for the fact that there is no infinite modability and a very flexible server/client structure anymore.

Right, but Barnz seemed to be questioning why there was any kind of furor in the first place.

I prefer not to support companies that go out of their way to worsen their customer's experiences with their product.

I only ever played COD games in SP too. Multiplayer is just boring and unsatisfying to me.

Man, that kotaku article pissed me off hardcore. Who the **** does IW think they are? They talk as if they actually have the power to change pc gaming entirely, and its absolutely going to happen. Eat a dick IW.

Yeah, even if they crap on MP like this I'll still be missing the SP, but I can't justify paying the full price for half a game to myself.

COD MW mutliplayer? You mean grenade/machine gun spam?

Worst multiplayer game ever.

Server ops have the ability to disallow anything. Try playing hardcore servers with nade/MG limits and no killing spree perks, it's actually quite fun and addicting. The threat of matchmaking is that we won't have that level of customization in MW2. Half the fun of PC FPS is finding or creating a server with not just people you enjoy playing with, but rules and server mods that are genuinely entertaining and not the sort of spammy rubbish you're mentioning.

The game is basically just "ring around the rosie". You run around the map in a huge circle killing all the enemies you see. It's just mayhem. There is no strategy, no tactics and no team work.

Hell! Most people just run and gun until they die or camp in front of a window with a machine gun.

This game is popular because it's so simple for simple minded gamers.

Sounds like you've done well for yourself in choosing to play with idiots, an admirable feat. You're allowed to not like the game but you don't have to act like it's a piece of shit because the limited experiences you've had playing with strangers wasn't to your liking. Any experience can be ruined by poor sportsmanship, that doesn't mean the game itself is objectively bad.

Which shooters have you found a rousing, team oriented and skill based alternative, even with complete strangers?

I particularly enjoy waiting at mid for ten minutes for a teammate to help me cap and being skull****ed by a stray grenade when we could have won three rounds in the meantime.

Don't get me wrong, I love me some DoD, but the public servers don't exactly showcase brilliant military strategists and they certainly aren't free of mindless griefers intent on ruining your fun.

It's deathmatch. When has deathmatch ever involved doing more than just killing everyone else? COD does this superbly. There's also modes other than deathmatch for people like you.

Sure, theres some people playing that are like that, but in almost every server I can a bunch of the people on my team to work together just by asking them to follow me, or asking them to try and cap a flag while I go for a different one.

In COD... its not even that there aren't people like that, its just that the game doesnt have any use for strategy or actual teamwork. I'll admit, I havent play a whole lot of Modern Warfare online, but what I have played, and what I've played from the previous COD games, theres no point in working together really. I was even in a clan for COD3 that won several matches, and I realized that it was essentially the same thing as playing in a random pub server as far as technique.

Obviously you've never competed.

For those doubting that CoD4 can be played competitively and with teamwork, filter to Search and Destroy hardcore mode and join clan servers. You'll find more than a few folks who not only excel at twitch based FPS tactics but also utilize quite a bit of teamwork. To test this out I played a few rounds in my dorm before heading back to the library to procastinate / post here. I was getting my ass kicked but it sure as hell was fun. Server was modified to remove airstrikes, C4, extra nades and "unfair" perks. The gameplay is very fast and volatile, your reaction time and communication has to be superb to actually secure an objective without your entire team dying.

Most likely it ran promod.

So you are going to pay, $60 for 4-5 hours of gameplay ? Hardly worth the money...
Let the man spend his money in whatever way he wants.

I know people who pay upwards of 300 USD for less than an hour of sex(which is a form of pleasurable entertainment), so paying 60 USD for 4-5 hours of entertainment isn't at all that bad IMO.

If that 4-5 hours was comprised of the kind of stuff Max Payne 2 or Batman Arkham Asylum puts out then yes, I'm perfectly willing to pay for something I believe to be an enjoyable experience.

In fact, i'd rather pay for a short, brilliant SP experience than a dull multiplayer one.

What bam23 said.

There is no strategy, no tactics and no team work.

There is no stratagy and no tactics? I think there is. Also the team work part I have never cared about anyway in games. I prefer to play alone. Just me and some random dudes on the enemy team suits me fine.

Hell! Most people just run and gun until they die or camp in front of a window with a machine gun.

Not from I have seen. Camp in front of a window with a machine gun - most people? Eh

This game is popular because it's so simple for simple minded gamers.

Thanks I appreciate the complement.
