ARMA 2 on Steam June 26th

Just a week after America's Army 3 launches. I just wish the ArmA series was a bit more approachable for newbs with the attention span of a fruit fly like myself.

What is America's Army 3? What's changed? I used to play America's Army ages ago. Before I used the name Raziaar while online. I used the name Phrenzy

Anyway... I hate corridor shooters like America's Army was. But I did enjoy the hell out of the game for a long time.

It uses the Unreal 3 engine, so expect much better graphics and larger maps. Besides, since 2.x, the maps have gotten much better - the Special Forces maps really open things up. And apparently, they're putting a larger emphasis on realism in AA3 to give you the "full Army experience."

The full Army experience...

Well, now that will be a boring ass game. 90% monotony, 10% action.

Don't forget the occasional rape of female military personnel by their male colleagues, which according to surveys is just as common as it was during the Vietnam war!

this doesnt fill me with confidence:

"Animations are broken. Doors don't open, guns have no reload animations, generally animations of the soldiers when getting in and out of vehicles look laughable.
Clipping effects to no end. 130 weapons, all in the same position on the player screen, and that just doesn't work. There's clipping everywhere you look.
The interface was improved to be worse at points.
In game info HUD system is broken. For instance, the assistant marks all the animals, but not the enemy that it's supposed to, overwhelming the player with utterly useless information.
The voice system is broken. A single sentence like" one. go to. tree" can be spoken by multiple voice actors, and it really doesn't tell you anything while standing in a forest. What tree is one to go to?
The "enemy at so and so clock" system has been abandoned for "left flank, right flank", but who's flank, where, when, wtf? I'm supposed to shoot an officer? Which officer, where? Perhaps one behind three hills in any given direction that only the AI can see?
The AI is broken and the single player depends heavily on it. Some of the examples mentioned are an air support chopper that is called in which hovers over the enemy for an eternity without firing a single shot, then rushes off to fly into a silo. Buildings and other obstacles do not stop the enemy from being able to spot you. On the other hand, him standing right in front of you won't mean that he will notice you. You shooting at him will not mean that he will notice you. The AI has been given every imaginable job, from controlling individual soldiers to entire convoys, aiming to give the game a more emergent gameplay than simply scripting would, but it fails at everything it is suppose to do.
When scripts are used, they fail as well, mostly by not being triggered.

They believe what they've played could at best be described as an alpha version, the first version that has all the gameplay features a dev team could want to implement inside it without anyone ever having tested it, a version that is at least 6 months of development away from a point where one should consider a release. "

then there was a patch released and people here were going hooray fixed!! But Pcgameshardware
saw this a bit differently and put up this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTR1XWfI0PU

I never played OFP or ARMA, but I love huge war games. I used to play a lot of Planetside back in the day.

Whats the player limit for this game?

I don't care for AI bugs, because this sounds like a game I would much rather play with humans than bots. I hate bots! Dunno why people like to play with bots.

It looks pretty close to OFP tbh, but then OFP itself was alot like Marmite, people either got it and loved it, or people completely hated it. One of the most jarring things is that the game controls more like a flight sim than a traditional FPS, somthing as simple as running forwards or looking around with the mouse imediately feels alien to alot of people.

I must say I am not a fan of wobbly camera and controls being excused as 'Realism' but the game is unique, its like taking control of a single guy on the ground of an RTS game, close quarters physics are left behind in favor of creating a sense of massive conflict, you spend alot of time moving through forests and scanning the horizon for enemies, the threat of being killed in a single shot can make situations quite exciting, esspeacialy in Coop.

I dont think I am enough of a millitary nut to really appreciate all this stuff, but I do enjoy it, People say OFP2 looks a bit more 'gamey' than the original, but that might mean its more my thing, I will likely give both a try tho.

I don't know if I can trust a review that says a sequel to Operation Flashpoint is Oblivion with assault rifles.

he compared it to Oblivion because of its open world and random encounters. read the review. tbh it's paints too glowing a picture of the game ..which is in contrast to other reviews but the english review version is the latest patched version

To be honest, most actual fans of OFP and ARMA seem to love ARMA2, mainly because they KNOW that BIS provide good support for their games, with many patches to eliminate bugs etc, which is more than you can say for many game developers these days sadly.

its all about the MP.. especially coop!

Had this game since Thursday and loving it!

I'll be getting this.

People moaned about the AI etc in the first ArmA but I wasn't troubled by anything major and completed most of the campaign with no issues. I doubt it's gotten worse.

Most of the fun is co-op multiplayer with custom missions and using the editor to throw some enemies down and try to take them out.

Awesome -

Everything I've heard about the game says this the true successor to OFP, and OFP was admittedly buggy as hell when it came out, so I can live with that.

It is, heck, this is the game that was originally called Operation Flashpoint 2 before the fallout of relations between BIS and Codemasters, it was then renamed "Game2", in order to FINALLY be renamed "ARMA2".

This thing that sucks at the mo is that most servers are filled with idiots who arnt about teamwork and more about being idots.. Hopefully we'll see UK/US servers pop up soon and the tides will turn.. I doubt it though..

Games like OFP/ARMA and ARMA2 aren't meant to be played on public servers, they're meant to be played in organized matches.

The demo is out. Available on all the usual sites. It is only 2.8 gigs ...

Yeah I'm downloading it at the moment.

Since I haven't bought the English version yet(I never actually bought the German either..*Hides face in shame*), want to see how much better it runs compared to version 1.00, since according to Placebo the demo is based off version 1.02

Dislike a lot about this game. The missions have no climax, not intense, no build up, no fun.

The. Voice. Acting. Really. Sucks. Sentences. Just. Individual. Words. Stringed. Together.

Motion blur is not cool. Especially when I can't turn it off.

Sounds are dry and faded. AI is just "placed" around the map, rather boring.

All your points are valid, but you need to roleplay a bit I guess, create your own climaxes. I found it quite a feat to stay alive during the first 15 minutes or so. I knew I got my bearings when I (quite heroically I might add) pulled a wounded teammate to safety while under constant fire, patched him up, and managed to deal with the tangos afterward. It runs better than I expected and I am amazed at the amount of content. There is a very extensive tutorial, two missions, two scenarios for the editor, and a couple of online maps. I will probably buy this when it arrives in the shop.

Omega was a helluva lot quicker than me. I did notice while starting the game up to check how fast it loads. You'd imagine it had longer loading times with such big maps.

I agree. This game isn't for everyone. I'm a big simulation and realism fan. I don't know what it is, but I have a lot of fun with this game. I usually spend a lot of time in the editor creating battles and scenarios to play. The visuals are insane as well and keeps me coming back for more. Hell I'm even running it at normal settings. I'd love to see this ran max at 1920x1200. That would be mind blowing.

Very tempted to splurge on this for co-op and it's apparent awesome mod-ability. Someone convince me.

I'm quite addicted to the demo, might have to give this one a purchase

Runs terribly on my laptop, artifacts everywhere.
I guess I'll only be able to play it on my PC then. :3

Runs horribly on my laptop too, almost always below 20fps unless I turn everything to lowest (which looks like shit). Hmmm....

Yep it has relatively high system requirements. Higher than Crysis, but the graphics are insane.

Are you guys playing the scenarios or are you editing and making your own?

The MP in the demo doesn't seem to really work at all, is it any less ****ed up in retail? It's plagued by horrid lag even on low ping servers, warping around, plus random disconnects and an atrocious interface.
