Armed forces?

Would you join the armed forces of your country if it was engaged in a war/conflict?
A real war (i.e not like Iraq, think a developed country declares war)
If your country was invaded/under real threat of invasion?

In short, what would have to happen to make you join? or why would you not join?

I don't have much choice in the matter. We have mandatory military service, and everyone who is fit for military service will have to fight if a war should occur. My service (which was postponed for some years) starts in 2006.

But assuming that I'd have a choice, I'd still go. Anyone who doesn't is worthless coward in my opinion.

It is my belife, that war is the rich mans tool, to gorvern and subdue the common and poor man, for their own benefits. Since i consider myself and my family common, I will not in any way put my self nor my family, in harms way to fatten the rich.

So if Sweden was attacked, you wouldn't defend it because it would only benefit the rich people in your country? Or are you saying that the rich people of the invading force would benefit from Swedish resistance

War is started by rich and greedy people, or by people whos ambition is to be rich aka to gain more.
Nope i would not defend sweden (btw sweden isent my country, im danish), but i would not defend Denmark either. When i was younger i would have, but i think i´ve grown older and somewhat wiser. War is started by people who wants more, i dont really want more. I want to be with my family, and if i have to i´ll move with it, again and again and again.
I will not lay down my life nor indanger my family for any religious, ethical, moral, finacial, philosiphical, or what ever isme there is.
If directly confronted, that is a whole other matter, i would chew the ****er to death if i had to, to get away.
I have 1 life, and i wish to spend it with the people whom i love.

You have to stop somewhere m8, 1 has to stop somewhere. And no the invading forces would not benefit from resistance, but their weapons industry sure as hell would, and if the resistance is succecfull, they would still have made a profit, if they lose, still a profit.

I see. So basically, if Russia (for example's sake) would attack you to gain more money (which it probably wouldn't, because warfare is so expensive), you wouldn't defend your country because you wouldn't want a few Russians to get richer? You'd rather see every last person in in your country die rather than allowing some people get rich?

Is this correct?

Or... do you think your country would say to Putin: "Hey Putin, let's have a war and get rich, h4w h4w bling bling" ?

Uh... you consider yourself wiser because you hold the misconception that wars are started when two countries mutually agree to fight a war to get rich (somehow)? The words I would use are "dumber" or "more insane."

Well, you're going to have a hard time moving when they close the borders and assign you to military service.

Thought a little, this isent the 1. discussion i had about this, nor with your type. So i think i´ll follow the eksample of another forumer i saw some time back (wich made me laugh heartly all day) and simply say:

I'd join the armed forces if our country was facing off against an equal, or moreso. Small skirmishes and conflicts, dont seem entirely attractive to me.

If my country was facing invasion, I've always told and imagined myself joining up with some kind of resistance if I was not able to join the frontline troops.

...The one thing that does bother me is that people I know around me could die, or that I could aswell. It would be a constant fear.

Only if there was an immediate, critical need of troops in a current conflict where a loss would be catastrophic for my side. Otherwise they really wouldn't need me.

Personally I prefer to work alone in the background more than anything.

I wouldnt join the military in any shape or form ...unless that is the military is made up of a rag tag group of survivors after an alien invasion and most humans are either dead or living in giant cities named after numbers

tbh I would probably join the resistance, but in other case id prefere not to join the army but things like spying and savotarge (spelt wrong) id prefere.

I dont see why you should have to fight. I consider myself a citzen of the world not the UK so I would prefere to take neither side and avoid the conflict. Id only do such things if it were a conflict against a grave evil power or if someone invaded the country.
