Hey guys and gals... WASSSUP!? well im a defiantly getting excited about hl2's release! i just got a new system three months ago and it has been running beautifully! But my main concern is my graphics card. Its frickeing amazing .. but i am wondering if it will be enough to run hl2 when it comes out. I have the hardware to back it up. 80gig sata hardrive, 2.8 ghz wit HT, 1 gig of ram.. etc. But the card itself is a ATI SAPHIRE RADEON 9600 Atlantis...Its OEM spec spec... but does have 256mg of video card memory. so it still not bad. but will this oem saphire meet the requirements to hl2? ANY help would be much abliged.... does anyone own the same card type as me and knows anything? PLEASE let me know peeps...

Thaxs

Mike :cheese:

9600 is more than enough to run HL2

The minimum specifications are 1GHz, 256MB DDR SDRAM and a DX7 level graphics card

The recommended requirements, however, aren't known. I speculate a DX9 card (Radeon 9500 and up, GeForce FX5700 and up) with a 2 GHz processor (provided it's not a Celeron) and 512MB would be optimal for HL2.
Complete guess on the recommended requirements, but it sounds about right IMO

HL2 really isn't that next gen, the graphics are awesome, don't get me wrong, but theres no dynamic lighting like most games these days. Theres no reflections (pretty obvious because valve doesn't want you to see gordon)

Your system will run HL2 fine.

..there are reflections. Thing is, Gordon won't reflect. You took it (Gordon not reflecting) way out of context, even the water reflects (surfaces, props, enemies)

Again, just because your player model won't reflect doesn't mean the game will lack reflections

Your system will run fine.

HL2 has all of the graphic features of next generation games (ie dynamic lighting and shadowing, normal maps, pixel shaders) but limits their use in game to keep the system requirements down.

just get a x800pro or xt. youll be happy with the investment

Why? His card seems fine enough for hl2. Not everyone can throw down over $400+ for one.

Oh yeah, I totally forgot about the water...

But I guess there won't be any mirrors in the game, unless they want gordon to come off as a vampire.

dude, your comp wil run it no worries. lol but mine will run it better.

Which 9600 are you getting? None XT or XT ....if your getting an XT one then id save a mere extra £20 ($40~) and get a OEM 9800 PRO ...it will out perform the 9600 for a much longer period of time and run your games at higher settings better.

I beg to differ here. The 9600 (non-pro) is not that fast a card... The 256MB of memory doesn't make it any faster (the card is too slow to use the memory in the first place). You may as well wait until HL2 comes out, but you may find yourself dissappointed, especially if you want to run the game with any kind of graphic details.

I wouldnt say the 9600 is more than enough for hl2. More like, the card is adequit. If money is no object to you, then get an X800 XT when they come out

half-life2 is benchmarking on DX6 low end systems... then im pretty sure from what u guys have said.. the 9600 256mg will be more than fine , for the game.

Peace

Mike

itll be fine... just because the x800 is one of the fastest out their dosnt mean i need to get it. the 9600 will be extremly fine. lol im sure of it.

9600 *IS* more than enough to RUN HL2. I didn't say to run it with all the bells and whistles.. :)

x800pro/xt *IS* more than enough to RUN HL@. EVEN with all the bells and whistles pollished at full settings.

ied like to see your 9600 beat that.

Wow. Somebodies parents aren't going to be happy when $~500 appears on their account...

dont you for 1 second think im like you white boys. i pay for my shit. dont you ever forget that.

Wow (again)... looks like I touched a nerve.

I hear flowers work wonders with parents .

Back on topic, anyway... The 9600 is a good card. While it might not run as well as a 9800 (or X800/6800), it'll still do pretty damn well.

Sigh... The card is 'more than enough' to run the game at minimum detail levels, I'll give you that... I mean, whether or not it supports DX9, it's slower than a GeForce 4 Ti for the most part. So I still think you're gonna be a tad bit dissappointed.

well considering i can play painkiller and farcry almost maxed out with graphics.... i think it will handle hl2 just fine on its higher detail levels.

it will run. But then again, so will a GeForce2, to a degree. I would suggest a 9800 Pro 128MB at the least, because that is what Gabe recommends.

Exactimately.

The Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB is a TON faster than the Radeon 9600 256MB. The memory does not make it faster:
Benches
As I said before the 9600 isn't really fast enough to use the extra memory (hell, the 9800 Pro isn't, either).

I own a Sapphire Atlantis 9800 Pro. Great stuff  And it's only $230 now!

If you want the best bang for your buck, buy the 9600XT for $150. :) newegg.com.

hmmm thankyou guys... all the info has been great .. so would u suggest buying a 9800 pro? either way im gonna spend moeny on getting a new card in the next month or so. I was thinking about the x800 but it is way to much for me right now. hmm if anybody has a 9800 and loves it let me know....

PEACE

While I do think you will want to upgrade in the end, as long as your current setup runs games fine for now you may as well wait and see how it runs HL2.
