Audio Problems with HL2

Okay, I just started the level 'Entanglment'. The level just after you use the turrets to defend. I'm in the room with the electrified water on the floor. This is by far the worst the stuttering has ever been. I am locking up and having sound loops every 10 seconds or so. And I'm not going anywhere new, just walking around in the room.

Plz hurry kind benefactors at valve.

I didn't expect the patch that soon, that's good news. Anyway I hope that it doesn't come out tomorrow, but like thursday or friday because I got absolutely no time left atm and if the patch came out tomorrow, I would HAVE to play :D

I just got back to this thread. So is this patch suppose to come out today or tomorrow?

It's gonna be funny watching all the people who made drastic changes to various files and settings complaining when the patch doesn't work the way it's expected to...

Maybe it was intentional by Valve to force players into cleaning up their systems and optimizing - very clever I can see the logic now!!

when a new audio clip plays, it stutters for a second...

when a lady talks, or the man speaks on the videos, it'd stutter...

when a sound which hadn't been loaded yet, e.g. the sound of a machine gun firing hadn't occured yet (thus being loaded), it'd stutter...

THis is the problem that everyones got right? The problem thats gonna be fixed in the patch?

cool, for a minute there i thought you all had stuttering just at any time, and it wasn't specific to the audio being played.

I just can't see how changing the textures for graphics on the graphics card will help address an issue which seems to be caused by audio clips playing...

oh well..

U guys should think urself lucky to have sound at all , I cant even get the thing to install...........;/ wont go next :(

Rellik Restam you fix seams to have worked for me. i have on board ac97 realtek sound.
i went to control panel and sounds and audio devices then audio ,advanced then performance and altered the hardware acceleration down to none..

i should not have to do this to get the game to work. hope the patch fixes this

i have 2 systems

2.6ghz 400fsb
512ddr ram 333mhz
120gb 7200rpm hd
250gb 7200rpm hd
ac97 realtek on board 5.1 sound
radeon 9800xt 256mb
catalyst 4.11 drivers

1.6ghz 400fsb
1.25GB rdram pc800
120gb 7200rpm hd
250gb 7200rpm hd
radeon 9600tx 128mb
ac97 codec 2 speaker on board sound
catalyst 4.11 drivers

the 2nd system which is far slower doesnt have the sound problem

I'm sure a lot of people made copies before the edited anything.

I really hope the patch fixes things for me. It's really annoying how I am getting 30 fps and less.

yo, I don't have any sound at all unless I turn down the excelleration to 2nd to none. And when I do that, then I get the stuttering. I got a Sound Blaster Live! with 5.1 support, which I am using. It sounds sweet with HL1 and Doom 3 was awesome in the dark and with volume up. I got a 3.0 GHz p4 with 1.5 gb pc3200 dual-mode chips and nvidia fx 5200 128mb. Sure, my sound card is a little weak, but the sounds in this game aren't anything special. I'm saying that there is definitely no memory issue here, the engine is jacked. If I could run Doom3, I should be able to run HL2. I bet the fix isn't released tomorrow like they promise either...

I'm guessing it has to do with steam/hl2/source loading any sort of media, sound, texture, or model...

only thing that doesnt make sense to me is that when I repetedly look at certain models (say the large astrolabe in piranesi) the game stutters for me,, shouldn't only stutter the first time?

this game sucks more buggy than windows "hey, i got a gret idea, lets sell unfinished software" woo hoo by the way the cracked version of the game runs more smoothly than the bought version!!! WTF

go into the advanced keyboard maping options and enable the console

I had the same problem, fixed it. Edit the config.cfg file if the hl2\cfg folder and set the following.

cl_forcepreload "1"
sv_forcepreload "1"
cl_smooth "0"

The first 2 were there but set to "0", I had to add the last line.
I still get the odd tick but few and far between and it only lasts an instant.

I hope this helps a lot of people.

U DA MAN....didnt want to post what everyone else was posting but this DID work for me.

Thanx a bunch squeetard!!

I do get some still....BUT its my video card.....outdated Gforce4 4200Ti :)

@phatox

open properties from your hl2 on the desktop and edit it with
"-console"

eg. c:\Programme\Valve\Steam\Steam.exe -applaunch 220 -console

Hi everyone, I think I have been having the same problem too, although mine doesn't seem to be as bad as some ppls. Mine doesnt stutter all the time, just when there is lots of explosions, or i enter new room. I also think after the first couple of levels it gets a bit better. I have read all of this thread and tried various things to make the problem go away. I think some of the console commands might have helped, but I am not sure exactly.

My specs are:
AMD Athlon 2600XP
Mobo ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe with on board Nforce 2 Soundstorm
ASUS ATI Radeon 9600XT
120GB IDE HDD
512Mb Corsair SDRAM

Hopefully this patch will get this all fixed up.

I registered really because people keep asking how to access the console. If you are a british user (like me) you might find that the ~ (tilde) key on your keyboard doesnt open it up, because its not in the same place as on US keyboards. So, if you have a british set-up then you can press the key on the top left of your keyboard with the funny symbols (¬`|) which I think has the tilde sign on American keyboards??.
I got confused to start with, so I thought this might help a couple of other brits out.

I hope ati's working on a similar patch and valve will release their patch until tomorrow (CET).
Someone pls soon post if this NVIDIA driver fixes the problem.

It does not, these are the drivers I've been using since I bought the game.

This is my contribution to the gallery of the infamous HL2 sound stuttering bug.
