australian aboriginal turns down 5 billion dollars

That dude's just the best haggler there is.
"We'll give you $5 billion for this land"
"No deal"
".... What? Uh ok... will you take a cheque for $10 billion?"
"No deal"
"Buh?! How much will you sell it for?"
"No amount of money will make me sell this land"
"$50 billion"
"Deal!"

this is the kinda stuff people dream about, and this guy isn't going to live it.

A man of principle and value. I'd like to meet him and shake his hand. I hope he holds out.

Rare breed, a man who is satisfied with his life and isn't greedy.

Oh, I read that.

Good luck. All this ****ing Northern Territory shit going on, he's lucky he's the only survivor. If there were kids around him, Gov would probably get him strung up on child-sexual assault charges or something.

He didn't turn down 5 billion, the uranium is worth 5 billion, he would only see a fraction of that. Besides, turning down 5 billion because of "principles" would've been utterly retarded, it's a fucking collection of sand and rocks, even if you don't care about the money yourself there's a shitload of good you can do with it for others. Not to mention the good the uranium will do in the world's energy crisis. Principles is just another word for "dumbass stubbornness".

Greed has nothing to do with it. Being offered 5 billion for rocks? There'd be no shame in accepting that. Look, it's his decision and it's not like I'm against it or anything. But let's not pretend he's the last man of integrity in a world gone awry, or some such fairytale bollocks.

Interesting. Man of priniciple and integrity.

Now they're just going to take it from him.

There's no shame in it UNLESS its against your religon and beliefs

I'm not saying he's the only person who would do something like this, I'm merely praising him for it. He realizes the large amounts of money he could make with the land and the uranium mines, but he chooses not to for the history associated with it and his descendants. His conviction is inspiring, no reason to downplay it.

Plus, if he has kids, they'll likely be less interested in the land by time their father has died and they'll sell it off.

If I sound like I'm being hard on the guy, I'm really not. I was aiming more at the posts that make it sound like it would have been cheap or something if he took the money.

I'd say conviction is worthless when it's not actually based on something, or worse: based on the fear that the earth spirits will come and punish the wicked invaders of the land. It's a mystery to me why conviction like that would be a virtue. I really don't see what praise he deserves for this, he says he's already happy so it's not like he's suffering while fighting for his beliefs (which again are based on nothing). Of course, this is based on the idea he turned down a substantial amount of money, if all he was offered was a car and a house I wouldn't bother with it either.

Isn't uranium mining kind of harmful to the environment? Like, you literally have to poison the land with arsenic?

he will live more happy that us

you all may say "omfg how he rejected 50 billon dallars? and for what? to fight de evil spiritz0rxs lololololololo he is nuts! atheism ftw" but sure he will live happier that you and me

I guess because he hasn't bowed to the almighty dollar, instead continuing with the whole 'the land is sacred' thing.

The Rainbow Serpent is still out there, he said.

I must say i admire him for standing up for what he believes in. IMO, Money only brings problems and changes people way too much.

aye.

It's been a bitch recently. I heard they banned all alcohol and pornography in the NT.

I love your signature.

"I'm not interested in money. I've got a job; I can buy tucker; I can go fishing and hunting. That's all that matters to me."

I'd like to shake the guy's hand.

I don't blame him for preserving his heritage. And I can agree with him that a good hunting or fishing spot is priceless :p . But I cant help but think he should find some agreement so we can have that sweet sweet Uranium. He's very scary looking by the way lol.

While I respect this guy for his stuberness, I think hes quite, if not very stupid. Granted, it proboaly wouldn't have been 5 billion smackers, but still, bloody heel the amount he could have had.

I really can't empathize with him, because I have very little personal concept of tradition or heritage. I'm a mutt- I just kinda do whatever. However, I've still got to applaud the guy for sticking to his principles, even if it means turning down 5 billion.

It's all fine and well giving him stick for being stubborn, selfish and not helping out the energy mess the world today is in, but on the other hand it's not like he, his ancestors or his heritage contributed to how ****ed up the world is nowadays.

I've got uranium? Who gives a shit? I've got two sticks and my brain.

(Exaggeration, I know, but my points there).

On one side, I feel respect for him, and his integrity, protecting his heritage and traditions.

On a more pragmatic note, he's stupid and selfish, and this problem can be solved with central law enforcement agencies :naughty:.

On another note:

As the sole surviving member of the Djok clan Mr Lee does not have any children to pass the land on to.

"I'll have to see what I can do about that," he said.

Oh, you try that, and the Rainbow Serpant will eat your face.

Well he seems like a headstrong kind of guy, which is cool. However, he also appears to be quite stupid (a magical blue tongued lizard?) and a racist f-ck. I hope he dies.

Interesting. Man of priniciple and integrity.
It's nothing to do with prinicples and integrity. He thinks there's a big ****ing blue-tongue lizard asleep in there.

He could do a lot of good with that kind of money.

Jeez, ive got nothing but respect for that man. Hope the field stays untouched.

I would have sold it in a heartbeat but I gotta respect him for caring so much about his ancestral land that he's willing to turn down enough money to buy his own country in order to protect it.

Well there goes the "how do you kill an aboriginal? Throw a two dollar coin off a cliff."

So his beliefs have nothing to do with it? God some people have their head shoved so far up their arse I swear, at least know what you're talking about.
