Avatar, Book 3: Fire

It really does get me how people will completely write off something based on the look of it.

"Wow this show sounds really interesting, I think I'll wat--oh wait, AH HATES ANNUH MAY." Seriously, whatever happened to judging something by the quality of its content rather than the style it's drawn in? Honestly, the art style is only vaguely reminiscint of anime. Anime stole its look from Western cartoons in the first place.

Seriously, I want to understand your mindset. Can you tell me why exactly you wouldn't give a show a chance based on the way it looks? You might like it. If you had any legitimate gripes about the show itself, I could understand, but refusing to give it a chance because of the artstyle...why?

I honestly just can't stand the art style, it just gets to me.

I used to watch DBZ when I was younger but pretty much stopped after realizing that every episode was nigh identical.
I also used to watch Cowboy Bebop and Outlaw Star but stopped for some reason. They were both well drawn shows that were a treat to the eye though.
I don't really see anything special about Avatar, I do remember seeing the teaser and seeing things like 3D rendered ships or people hoverboarding or something.

But, if you can show me something to get me interested I'm totally open to it.
Sorry for the possibly incoherent post, I just woke up.

Christ, all I can find on Youtube is dodgy AMVs.

Although I feel this one is pretty good:

(Though I fear that might give you the wrong impression, seeing as it is a Japanese Anime Music Video. :/)

Jesus, nobody just leaves normal footage, everyone tries to "Improve" it with their ****ing music! ARGH!

This one is ok, but it's just battle moves.

TBH I advise just sitting down with one of the better episodes and watching it. Hang on a second and Darkseid, who has more tenacity than I, will probably find you an awesome example.

/EDIT How do you get the friggin' Youtube tags to work?

//EDIT Oh, URL tags. Smart.

Heh, the last one managed to make me chuckle.
Show seems cool, heavy in the oriental influence.

I'll probably watch a few episodes when I have time.

What's the first season called?

Maybe it isn't from Japan, but it definitely has the look and style of an anime.
And I hate that.
I'm no expert on animes, but it is quite different from the ones I've seen (not that I don't like animes in general, I used to love DBZ and Outlaw Star). It's much more Western in that each episode (bar a few double-episodes) has its own self-contained story that is resolved by the end, as well as the ever-progressing main storyline. The fights also don't last 6 episodes (looking at you, DBZ <_<) and are usually fast-pased and fluid, rather than consisting mainly of the characters eyeing eachother up and talking/thinking.

It also has very good character progression and even the main antogonist of the first series is shown very sympatheticly and is now argueably a protagonist (though the current main antagonist is just a psycho).

I miss Admiral Jhow (sp?). I really liked him and his fights with Zuko.

Zhao. I didn't like the guy personally. Found him a rather lame villain. His final scene was cool, though...if you've ever played any of the SNK fighting games, it reminded me of Geese Howard. Pretty much the exact same scene.

Zhao, that's it. I really liked him, if only for his conflict with Zuko.

Edit: I saw The Avatar and the Fire Lord today and I was a bit disapointed with
Iroh's first lines of the series.
Otherwise, great episode.

I want more Iroh. And I'm hoping Bumi will show up shortly, he has to or all is lost.

The Day of Black Sun was badly animated imho, and really suffered from being a kid's show. : (

I saw all of Day of Black Sun part 1 except for the last single minute. I bet I missed a huge plot twist and all!

Also, why do all the Fire Nation's nation guard wear such crap uniforms? Fire Navy uniforms are so much better.

Zomg, necromancy!

So what are you guys' favourite episodes?

Mine, in each book:

Book One, Water
Avatar Roku (Winter Solstice part 2)
This is where the story really takes off. It intruduces the metior and the idea of taking out Fire Lord Ozai. Avatar Roku also really kicks ass when he posses Aang.

The Siege of the North
My favourite episodes. I think Zhao, Zuko and Iroh are all brilliant in these episodes (The Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom have all the best characters) and the Fire Navy siege and Aang + Water Spirit = I'M HUGE is awesome. The big confrontation at the Spirit Oasis is great.

Book Two, Earth
The Chase
Er...I think that was the name of the episode. The one with Azula, Mai and Ty Lee chasing the gang in a giant tank? It has Toph and Iron (Best damn characters in the show) having tea together and the great three-way battle at the end between Aang, Zuko and Azula.

Lake Laogai
Some of the progression of this episode, like in a few others, seems a bit rushed and forced "He's lying. But he's not lying. He's been brainwashed. Appa is at Lake Laogai!" but I think Zuko and Iroh are great in this episode. I love Iroh's little speach, I think it's one of his best moments. It also has some good Toph-is-blind jokes which I always like.

The Crossroads of Destiny
This is overall just a great episode and a great crescendo to end Book Two on. The fights are brilliant, and you can really see Zuko struggling to make a choice.
"The Earth Kingdom...has fallen."

Book Three, Fire
The Avatar and the Firelord
Nice bit of story in this episode and seeing the Fire Lord's and the Avatar's relationship evolving is very nice (I'm being vague on purpose. Don't think I should spoil anything from Book Three, just in case).

The Puppetmaster
I just love bloodbending.
Also,
"The Moon Spirit is a gentle loving lady! She rules the sky with compassion and lunar goodness!"

I really liked The Runaway, if for no other reason than we saw our heroes scamming innocent people and getting away with it.

"What is this?!"
"It sounds like a piece of paper."

"What's with you people? I'M BLIND!"

"We'll split up to cover more area. Toph, I guess you should just come with me."
"WHY?! Because you think I can't put up posters on my own!?

...

It's upside-down, isn't it?"

Ok, I remember reading this thread ages ago, but I never bothered to watch it until a couple weeks ago when I was flipping through the channels and saw this show. Well I watched it and kind of liked it, and soon found the entire show online and watched the entire show up until the prison episodes. What really sets this show apart for me is the animation, it just looks so good compared to the other shows I've seen. But how long has it been since the last episode has aired? I already watched a couple shows that haven't aired in the US, but it looks like its taking months for them to finish book 3. And is the show really only going to last 3 seasons? it seems to good to be only that short, It would really like the show to go for longer.

I hope it does end after the third (or at the very most forth) season so that it doesn't drag on and on and then end really poorly like many shows do. It should end on a high note. I still haven't seen The Firebending Masters though :(
