if tehy price it right this may be a contester against sli

SLI Dual-gpu Gfx Cards.

Woah, I've never seen 2 GPU's on a video card! [/sarcasm]
I have a Rage MAXX and a Voodoo 4 in pc's here at home. It's been done before.

So this is what nVidia bought 3dfx for eh?

...no.... two GPUs on a card isn't a 3dfx/nvidia trademark.... XGI made one too, but the card sucked arse. (Volari X8 Duo)

And it doesn't seem to me that this an nvidia thing per-sea, just a gigabyte thing.

It's a step in the right direction as it removes any hassle of buying 2 cards. But it still is pretty CPU bound and doesn't always offer the best performance compared to one faster GPU. It's SLI just on one card instead of two.

Yeah, but there are plusses, from a manufaturers POV.

1) Making an actually faster chip is a tough, expensive job.

2) Producing (for the chip-maker) and obtaining (for the board-maker) parts able to run at 6600GT speeds is easier than the hand-picked (I'm sure) 6800-XT-PE-XL-Super (or whatever) boards. So maybe these will be more easily available, hence cheaper for the performance they provide...

3) Vs. real SLI, you don't need a SLI board, which is a $50/$100 premium, last I heard. Of course it's not available as an upgrade option anymore, but that seems like a possible positive benefit.

This is good for everyone. Imagine the next gen cards if they all have either SLI or a dual chip version. Yea price wise itll be a burn for the higher end stuff, but imagine.

Picture ATI or NVIDIAs top of the line next gen card. Then picture it with a dual core. Then picture it in a 2 card SLI. I know thats really pushing it, but its on the horizon now. So if the next gen top of the line cards are say...twice as fast as todays top of the line. That would mean if you had the money to spend, you could have 8x the speed as your current x800 or 850. wow.
