bandwidth increase

my dad just received an email from BT saying they are upgrading our 500kb connection to 2mb. sounds sweet dont it. i know there have been posts already sayin other ISPs are doing this.

but guess what, BT are now sticking on a monthly download cap! WTF! 15GB, ok, it should be 'sufficient for the majority of users' but what about us gamers, who are constantly downloading/uploading data as we play online.
within a period of a few days i download at LEAST 5GB, which include a few linux distros, the FC3 DVD iso being about 2.4GB itself. then there is an eternity of game patches, mouth watering clips to watch of up-coming games.
in my house there are 4 computers, up to 3 being used at a time. my sis, myself, and my dad all constantly yapping on MSN, some on Yahoo too. webcam and voice over IP.

well, il stop moaning about it. maybe it will just be sufficient, maybe more than plenty and im making a fuss over nothing

BT is really confusing me at teh moment, when we first got broadband, it was BTOpenworld, then came BTBroadband which was a different ISP altogether. then BTOpenworld joined up with Yahoo! oh, im just not gonna bother.
there is like Broadband Basic packages (def not us) and they get 1 or 2GB caps. then there is 15GB and 30GB caps, but from what i understand we get 15.
but 2MB from 576KB, will i notice any differences? lower pings? faster transfer rates in general?

How could you possibly use up 15GB in a month? The amount of bandwith people feel the need to consume baffles me. :|

I don't think I'l ever need more than 15GB, but even so it doens't matter if I go over. BT will just send me a letter or phone up asking why.

btw, if htis is a valid question: how much data will approx have been transfered in an hour of playing CS Source, leaving rates at default.

i would be buggered then i like downlaoded WoW which is 2.5 gbs or sumamt and world wind and i just go on download sprees so i would be using that limit up specially as my dad downlaods music from napster n the like

Eh? I didn't realise download caps measure the bandwidth used when playing games? :O I thought it was just for how much bandwidth you use downloading?

You upload and download constantly while playing games...but its not that much data. A lot of constant playing adds up though.

Well my 1.5mb NTL is being upgraded to 3mb (40GB download cap) on the 14th of this month

. Can't see myself using 40gb bandwidth from just playing WoW. Well...2 computers playing WoW.

Do the math: assuming a constant two megabits per second download rate, and using the "telecom" definition of megabit (1000000 bits/sec) then;

15GB = 15 * 1024^3 * 8 = 128849018880 bits

128849018880 bits / 2000000 bits/sec = 64424.50944 seconds

64424.50944 seconds / 60 / 60 ~= 17.9 hours of max. bandwidth usage

Of course the download rates will vary, and you likly won't be saturating your bandwidth capacity all the time you are using it. But given how easy it would now be to pull in big files you'll probably hit the download cap at least once.

do you need a bt or ntl line for that? 30 quid a month for 2mbits though...there HAS to be some sort of catch

to further that, when i first got broadband, probably among the first in this city years ago, it was on a 50:1 shared connection, not sure how that is now though.

on an average speed of 40KB/sec on torrent, ive been leaving it on for probably 30+hours in the past week minimum, downloading, as well as seeding.

i got 10 gig... and i'm okay with that, shared with 3 peoples...

thats more than 300mb a day tho, so it is a HUGE amount
