The beta, demo and retail versions of BF2142 to complement the existing ingame advertising ships with software that monitors your browsing habits indirectly linked through the featured ingame ads.

And from DICE:

The information that is gathered is specifically related to the ingame ads themselves and not anything personally related to you.

There is no additional spy ware software installed secretly to your machine.
not even a denial :O

seriously after everything else that has happened to date and now this bombshell, how can any sane person justify purchasing this game???

to me its totally unacceptable for me to purchase a product that is not exactly as described - the same way I won't buy a product that has starforce hidden in its software, I buy what is advertised nothing more

Why would you buy it? Because it is insane fun that's why!

Well, doesn`t most games contain some..? It`s not like they`ll f*** up you`r pc or something, right? Most likely there`s 10-20 spywares/other that has infected your machine. I think^^

some of you guys have no intergrity ..sure why the heck not let EA monitor your every move in game and collect that data to give to 3rd parties with absolutely zero benefit to customers ..**** you EA

I can say who is buying the game here: http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showthread.php?t=114326 And you can't just block the ports for the ads. You would probably get some error message saying that you unable to connect to the server. I'm just waiting for Quake Wars.

You have no clue if you can or cannot, most likely I bet you can. Since the ads have nothing to do with the gameplay...

So I have no integrity since I don't care if VALVe monitor how I play in their games? Thats what their basically doing in this game.

the difference is Valve monitor your gaming to improve their games
DICE are monitoring the advertisements you look at ingame AND your internet browsing habits related to those ads to line their pockets

valve doesnt sell that info to a third party

this is the same thing as spyware ..we use programs like adaware for a reason. You dont seem to understand that EA is selling a service to their clients that essentially uses their customers as guinea pigs ...ultimately it comes down to choice; based on what level of intrusion you're comfortable with ..I choose to not give my money to EA because of the ads ..we have to draw the line somewhere

Data will only be gathered from in game. Web browsing and other profiling data is not being gathered.

Squib has essentially nailed it. The purpose of the gathering is to determine if an ad is viewed by players.

Meh it's only in game, I have a feeling they'll can the in game ads as no one looks at them. As for blocking the ads we do have hosts files, Twill be interesting to see how this works. I mean really all the info they're going to get is that people are too busy playing the game to look at the ads.

Benefit to you? Game company learns that people don't like ads.

I agree. I'd be pissed if some company was gathering information from what I was doing as well. I mean, if we let this slide, who knows what door that could open. "Well, they will allow this, lets see what else we can do..."

I vote to make a stand, though I don't plan on buying this game anyway..so I'm safe.

Funny thing I thought of while driving home from college about this subject. The target age for this game is the average 20-30 yr old who probably looks up lots of porn. So can you imagine a future in 2142 with billboards all displaying porn?

Everybody, start going to Stileproject.com. Get you're dose of billboards ranging form Scat to Goatse to girls on girls.

Oh ya, makes me WANT to slightly play 2142 just for that :p

Oh, thanks! Installing 1 batch of secret spyware is fine, but 2? UNACCEPTABLE!

err no. The vast majority of games don't install any spyware on your computer.

BF2142 sucks anyways. It's a BF2 mod.

I enjoy the game but I hate in game advertising and shoddy support. I'm not sure what to do.

according to CGW podcast the retail version comes with a disclaimer card saying your ip is logged and other information is collected ...obviously EA is a little nervous about it or they wouldnt have included a disclaimer ..**** you EA

Honestly, so what? Will it affect the game either way? No. You will just see ads here and there.

To be honest, I don't care if they monitor what I'm looking up/searching. I mean if I went to hentai porn sites all day, and I started seeing billboards in BF2142 showing hentai porn then I'd be a little freaked out.

Targeted in game advertisement, anyone can see why it's stupid when your paying for a product. However, if this cons DICE into doing a decent job come patches due to whatever income they get from these advertisement deals, all the better.

Once again we'll have to wait and see how this turns out. Many of your are dead set against buying the game and really like to be vulgar about it. **** this **** that, sheesh it's not going to rape you in the arse.

Meh, what game DOESN'T include this crap in it nowadays?

Haha. The game is really fun, but I don't want to be pounding along in a walker and get distracted by a billboard, while a gunship flys over and pwns me!

I don't know how to feel about this. I don't like the idea of anyone or anything looking over my shoulder while I browse the internet, but on the other hand, the game's fun.

I'll probably still get it.

EA can watch me block their ports so I can NOT use their ingame advertising ;)

Technically Steam ISN'T spyware. You can disable all the popups, etc. More of DRM anyways. :p

This isn't spyware in the classic sense. First and foremost your informed, hence it's not spying, you know what it's doing. Secondly it's merely checking a player viewing angle within a certain area. Odds are no one is going to look at the ads no matter how enticing "insert Viagra brand here" is.

Will it be possible to remove it? Not the ads, just how they check upon what you surf. Also, are the ads actually going to be in the game? That wouldn't make a bit of sense personally. Its 2142. Why would you put ads for McDonalds and Taco Bell on a billboard in 2142?!

DICE has a reputation for always having to patch the **** out of their games. It happend to BF1942 and BF2 (never played bf'nam). There is no ****ing way in HELL am i going to buy a buggy-add filled game. You guys may be cool with this intrusive piece of garbage and overall total disrespect for their customers but not me.

Didn't you know?! McDonalds and Taco Bell are immortal accross time!
I may not care too much about the ads if I can get rid of them with adaware or w/e, if I cant, then uninstall the demo time! (although I am thinking about getting the game, its kinda fun, better than BF2 IMO).

no, you are not informed ..all it says is that data is colllected ..not what it's used for ..and it's not a single company but many ..the company provides ads for it's clients ..there could literally be hundreds of companies looking at your info.

btw those who have no problem with this ...why do you use spyware apps to get rid of spyware ...it's exactly the same thing but because it comes from a gaming companing it's ok?

I always thought the advert idea was completely unnessecery (sp?) considering how much cash EA has already =/

I'm still getting the game. Found the BETA and the demo to be great fun. Put my order in for it today.
I dont mind the adverts, not like I'm gonna lose any game time over it. Besides, loads of games have some sort of advert it in nowadays.

Actually, if you remember...Taco Bell won the Franchise War...
