Battlefield 2142 contains spyware

another reason to save those 50 bucks and wait for Quake Wars

The reason we have programs to get rid of spyware is because we don't want our information stolen and we don't like getting assloads of random popups.

While the ingame advert system comes close, i don't think it crosses the line enough to make too big an issue of itself.

"Oh no someone is collecting info on whether or not I stop and stare at some stupid billboard!"

The information they are collecting is effectively worthless and you could always just not look at the billboards. EA might be assholes, but i like the BF series and won't stop playing over some tiny matter that makes 0 difference.

heh I hardly think it's worthless if EA sells it and companies pay money for it, it must have monetary worth ..from a player standpoint it may seem useless but companies wouldnt be forking over thousands of dollars for advertising that is better spent elsewhere ... data collection is invaluable to those companies because they can judge first hand what is effective or not based on player interaction in game and online (follow up marketing) ..the only thing is that we arent being asked whether we want to be tracked or not .... since we're paying for our time and the companies are profiting from our time, it stands to reason that some sort of reward for being a marketing tool would be forthcoming. I mean they dont expect something for free why should we? Why should we pay to be guniea pigs in their marketing experiment? Out of principle I'm boycotting this game, the rest of you can do whatever you please but imo this goes too far

In the latest CGW podcast, they received retail boxed copies of BF 2142.

When you open the box, a big slip of paper falls out first, preceeding any discs or manuals. The slip of paper says, essentially, that 2142 includes monitoring software which runs while your computer is online, and records "anonymous" information like your IP address, surfing habits (probably via cookie scans), and other "computing habits" in order to report this information back to ad companies and ad servers, which generates in-game ads.

Now, I can live with certain in-game ads (though apparently there will be Dodge truck and Neon ads in the bleak, futuristic world of 2142), but including a lengthy description - outside of even the Eula - seems to indicate even EA knows that this is some shady borderline spyware shit.

so you dont even have to be playing the game for it to track you?

oh and Dodge trucks and freaking Neons? ... how do vehicles from 2006 fit into a game that's set in 2142?

btw here's the disclaimer that's included with the retail release:

clearly it gives you no choice ..either play with it enabled or dont play at all. GG EA nice to see you back on track in giving your customers the best service possible

How do you remove that shit, do you just remove those key's in the registry.

And do you only get to see that disclaimer after you have purchased the game or is it somewhere on the box

Wow.... I hope EA burns in hell for this.

They even left it specifically vague for the extra info collected... those motherf*ckers.

the disclaimer is a printed page that comes in the box ..currently there is no way of disabling the ads or the spyware

god thats so annoying....i didnt know about out-of-game monitoring. I might not get this game now...lets be honest, everythings the same except for some stupid looking guns and mechs.

But I had the demo, I did not like it. SO I uninstalled it, now do I still need to uninstal the spyware and if I do how.

I'm not sure the spyware was included with the demo ..you tell me, I havent played it ...where there ads in game?

None.
Also, is the game actually out today? Or does it go on sale in stores tomorrow?

do we really want these people looking into our pc's?

Operating from New York, London and Berlin, the IGA Worldwide network of companies currently includes IGA Partners North America (formerly In-game Partners LLC), IGA Partners Europe and IGA Technologies, with further offices in Paris, Benelux, Los Angeles and Tokyo soon to follow.

A 'technology enabled' media company, IGA Partners' primary offering is the planning, serving and tracking of highly targeted and dynamically updateable advertising campaigns into their global network of live premium PC and videogame titles, via proprietary ad-serving technology.

This technology allows IGA brand clients to reach millions of end-users, who will see a range of territory-localized and context-sensitive advertising content both during and between gameplay sessions, including billboards, interstitial screens, TV spots and a wide variety of other formats comparable with real world advertising. And with the imminent approach of the next generation of high definition, broadband-enabled, 'always on' game consoles, this content will rapidly expand to include a wider variety of rich media and even brand-specific gameplay content.

yup seems pretty harmless :rolling:

"Developers and publishers can expect the revenues for in-game advertising to grow significantly in both scale and frequency over the near to medium future, and one of the roles of IGA Partners is to assist them in developing and maintaining premium pricing for their in-game advertising inventory as the industry continues to mature."

**** you EA

My feeling is that in-game advertising will help to finally establish gaming as the dominant entertainment medium of the 21st Century."

**** you corporate blood sucking shill

**** YOUUUUU EEEEEEE AAAAAAAAAA!!!1

roflmayo

It's only expected that advertising will eventually be a part of everything.

Wow...just wow.

I was starting to look past this idea of it monitering what ads you look at..but it's looking at your surfing habits. **** you EA.

Welcome to the future of gaming (Xbox 360, PS3, PC). The Wii is excused from this *** raping.

It's not doing that, that is a false rumor

Battlefield 2142 is amazing. I'm glad I purchased it earlier.

BF2142 does not monitor surfing habits, only the ingame ads that you look at.

I can also reason exactly why thet are doing this too. And its not as simple as "we need to line our pockets with more green."

Realize that as technology increases, so does the cost of making a game. You end up taking increasingly more difficult risks with ever larger amounts of money in the hope that the game sells well. It is only natural that a game company would want to lessen the finacial risk somewhat by being paid by advertisers to host ingame ads of sorts.

Short term for us the consumers is no real advantage. Long term however is that companies can be a little more innovative when the financial risk is lessened.

We just have to put up with seeing billboards with random crap on them. Personally i think it might get interesting, almost like how the superbowl comercials are now. Who knows.

Well I'm not gonna argue anymore or reply back with O RLY?! when people say the game sucks after all. The evidence is obvious and Stern has done a great job of providing evidence. Oh and I have a motto if your scared about your game doing great or not, "Go big or go the **** home". ;)

Come on guys, it's EA.

What the hell do you expect?

**** you EA. Corporate bastards. They need to be tarred and feathered. This is completely unacceptable, and I can't believe people buy this shit. Just another reason why I won't be buying Battlefield 2142. Hope it fails, miserably.

Oh and, Steam is technically spyware.

I could be wrong on it all, though.

You are.

Agreed. I wont buy another EA game until they turn around. They still owe me the armed Blackhawks in BF2!
