There is no official announcement yet, but since Battlefield: Bad Company seems to have become console-only over the last months this can only mean (ok, I am slightly exagerating here) that a new PC outing of the Battlefield series is on its way. Lets speculate a bit about what it will be like.

My first reaction would be that EA will probably fook it up like they did with Battlefield 2142. I seriously despise that game. I tried to play it the last couple of weeks but its simply not as much fun as BF2, let alone BF1942.

But then again, the gameplay possibilities offered by the new Frostbite engine are pretty sweet. Everything (I repeat: everything) in the environment is destructable. You can see a bit of that in the new gameplay video. Imagine full destructability in a round of BF2 ....

Talking of which, what era should it be in? I personally can't get enough of WWII games so I definitely wouldn't mind a re-hash of BF1942 with the new engine. But then again, a modern day scenario might be cool too. How about an oil rich country in South America (nudge nudge) running amok in the Caribean?

Speculate!

Battlefield 1945?

(Russians/British/Americans versus Japanese/German in next-gen environments etc etc)

the destruction feature looks really bad. It doesnt look dynamic at all, its like if you shot the corner of a concrete wall the entire wall crumbles into pieces in smoke and rubble..... :/

I speculate it will be a game I will not spend another $50 on...EA still owes me the Blackhawk with rocket pods they advertised, and are even on the CD labels!!!

Yeah, it's not life-like yet, but you have to keep in mind that full physics cost a lot of CPU time. Physics in games will evolve quite a bit like graphics have done, me guesses. Except for the special cards that is.

That video turned me off because of the hollywood realism.

The problem is, with Project Reality on the table, the BF2 franchise can go no further than trying to top that. Unless they want their games to be immature, noobified, CSS Mk. II and bug ridden, the only way forward is to analyise Project Reality and try and up it. I mean lets face it, I'd be pretty embarassed if I worked at Dice/EA and then someone makes a mod that pretty much deems the original game obsolete.

But unless, of course, they're aiming for more of the same of Battlefield 2 vanilla, but with new maps and weapons (!!!) then whatever... their loss.

Hey does project reality require the expansion pack? I don't have it(or them?)

Nah, it just goes over the top of BF2 and patch 1.41 (or whatever number it is)

I liked that trailer. Looked good.

I would LOVE to see a Battlefield on the PC with a fully destructable environment.

I dunno about a time period. Maybe have it so it has maps from different timelines. WWII, Vietnam, modern, etc. Of course with the correct weapons for that timeline and such.

Infantry already have it hard in BF games, destructable environment means that ten minutes into a round they have no cover and jet pilots can have a field day spawn raping flag points.

On another note, I'd also like to see bf1942 remade. One of the greatest games I've ever bought.

That's kinda true. After a while of playing a flag point is going to be bombed to hell and such. Maybe they could have dynamic capture points? For example, after a flag point has been destroyed to a certain extent, the commander will send out a radio message saying that point is useless, go and capture so and so instead.

Oh my god... why am I just now hearing about Project Reality? This seems orgasmic to me! I'm going to install BF2 and play it! I love realism in games like this.

Tell me, how many people play right now? Is it still few like I read in the articles from back in january?

It's a pretty hefty community, as far as I know. It only shows 25/35 servers on my listing, but I think thats a bug on my end because I've seen screen caps of listings of over a 100 servers. I think, anyway. Either way, all the games are usually heavily occupied, so it's pretty thriving. It's awesome fun, though. Not played in a while because I've no idea how to get my mic working/TeamSpeak.

No, the dev team only releases server files to people they deem fit. This apparently "makes for better quality play on the servers."

And it might.

Woah! Woah! Woah!

You have to GET PERMISSION to run servers?

What kind of crappy system is that? :|

lol@permission only. *sigh*

Anyway, I don't know, there are a few points I didn't like in the trailer, but all in all, I could grow to love it.

One that seems to be working just fine, last time I checked.

Project Reality is a great mod! Loads of fun to play if you're in a good squad using proper tactics and such.

Though I still play BF2 more 'cause its just easier to pick up and play. I play PR if I have a bit more time on my hands.

That Bad Company video look like Black on crack-cocaine. Might pick that up.

For the next BF, it would be interesting to see a setting in the past like in Greece or feudal Japan. SAMURAI.

BF2 was buggy as ****. I couldn't put up with the constant crashing and missile rape from some asshole in a jet.

Horribly unbalanced game.

I played Project Reality in it's early stages, which was a year ago. Project Reality imho, seems to have an enfasis on realism compared to the arcadey feel of Battlefield 2. It's a little too realistic as far as the gameplay is concerned. They got got crazy with the whole realism and took away some of the emersion like the gun flash and explosions.

When FH2, it's going to be the best mod out there, hence BM:S for HL2.

I like realism gameplay, because I don't often like fast and frenetic firefights. There are times when those are necessary, but I prefer a slower, more tactical and strategic approach.

I don't think I could go back to BF2 now that I've played Project Reality. No more bunny hopping/dolphin diving enemies, unbalanced weapons and vehicles, TK'ing for vehicles, jet whoring... ah, it feels good to be away.

I'm all for a more realistic BF2 but when it gets to the point of removing gunfire from the muzzle of the barrel and other graphical effects... I don't know.

Eh? Muzzle flare is still there. :\ When you say you played the first version of PR, you do know there have been 5 more since then, right? Or perhaps it's your graphics card/PC.

And adding certain kits to run certain vehicles/weapons. I don't know, what's so wrong with just wanting to have a certain weapon/drive a certain vehicle on a whim?

C'mon, guys. Most of the answers here are in the title of the mod - Reality. :P In real life, if you're a infantry foot soldier, why would you be able to pilot an Apache, or crew the gunner position on a tank?

There's a line where reality interrupts the fun of a game. PR crushed and spat on that line.

I've been having more fun in the whole 8 or so games of PR I've played than I have over the good 100 or so (at mates house) I have played of v. BF2. I just can't stand people that dolphine dive, bunny hop and whore stuff. Kit limiting and the like in PR have never been a problem for me. It's not like it's difficult to get anything anyway, you can get your pilot or support kit a little while later when someone else has 'finished' with it (a la, died)

Heh, I'm not so sure it was my PC considering I had a GeForce 6800 256mb AGP, AMD Athlon x64 +3200 2.0GHZ, and 1GiG of ram would've been okay on medium settings (I can't stand the fact HL2 looked phenominal on this setup, whilst Bf2 all on high looked above average in terms of graphics). Perhaps it was a bug concidering the amount of bugs Bf2 had and I can't believe EA just left Bf2 for dead when Bf2142 released.

I think PR went alittle too far with the realism. I would've been happy if they just made the weapons and vehicles have:
  • Realistic accuracy
  • Realistic pop
  • Realistic range
  • Realistic recoil
  • Realistic armour
  • Relistic damage.
Yeah there's truth in what Qonfy said, realistic is good to a certain degree but when it starts to feel like America's army it starts to get fairly boring.

Yep, just finished playing a few hours of PRM, great mod.

The kits required to drive certain vehicles seems logical. Any soldier can drive a Humvee, but not everyone can drive an APC, tank or fly a chopper. You need to have someone that specializes in this field.

As for BF3, destructible environments and jets spoiling the fun - how about DICE removes the jets? ;)

I'll let Bob_Marley tackle that one, but as far as I'm aware, all the attention to detail is there, perhaps maybe give or take (?)

As for going too far with realism, I disagree. To me, it is the perfect way of playing a combat war game such as BF. Perhaps you're too twitchy, too trigger happy, you prefer the faster games (and who says those are for consoles only, pfft!). I like both, but after a few games I slipped perfectly into PR.

Nah, a perfect example of what I perfer would be the WWII mod Forgotten Hope for Battlefield 1942. It's the perfect blend of historical accuracy, and some what realistic, but still being fun for everyone that enjoys Battlefield 1942 in what it should have been.

So all this talk of battlefield + mucho boredom led me to reinstall bf2... god what a piece of trash. Half the servers are running karkand nade festivals, one fourth is wake where people tk you for just looking in their direction, and the rest are barely populated servers that ping over 400.

You try installing Armored Fury? I love nothing more than the maps that come in that one!!! I can spend hours cruising up and down the interstate in a big rig loaded with C4 looking for somebody stupid enough to try to block me...

Get PRM.

The did in 2142 the gunship is a mix of the chopper/jet and doesn't have any bombs which **** up everyone.

And that worked really well. Combine that with artillery that doesn't kill you instantly, armour that you can take out in one shot in the rear (possible in BF2, but tricky and rather a glitch) and medpacks that don't restore full health when you walk over them (so frustrating when you're firing at someone, he's almost dead and throws himself a medpack that immediately restores him to perfect health) and you've got a game that's far more balanced than BF2 and less frustrating.
