Interesting...

Best Buy is starting the Half Life 2 pre-sell next. I work for Best Buy and saw this in our internal news. Best Buy would not normally start a pre-sell for a game six months away from release. Obviously they are betting on (or already know about?) a holiday release.

check the banner of GamePlay , its sais
49 Days Till Release

actually u can pre order it already on the bestbuy web site, it says released the 3rd Nov 2003.

well its logic cause valve alrady announced the game is in the duplicate stage so a few copies as been made...

Errr, where's that then exactly?
No, really?

I hope you're right, I really so [aside: name that film!] :bounce:

lol

Maybe the game should go GOLD first? You're nutz if you believe the game isn't pushed back until 2004. They have to change the source code and then spend months testing it and bug fixing, etc... They have to go through another whole testing cycle before the game is ready...

Unless Steam is more powerful then we know and can patch major security exploits on the fly, it's 2004.

Plus, if the hacker is correct, Valve is no where near to going Gold.

Of course, Valve could come out, tell us whats going on and put all this f-cking speculation to rest finally. The ball is in Valve's court - they need to make decisions and share them with us.

Wow I guess if your three speculative points were true you would be correct, but there is no way to know is there.

or during the past week they've been going over what's been stolen, re-coded it in an effort to meet their deadline instead of letting the fans down again, and if anything else major comes up, patch it w/ steam, and not let the people log on until the HL2 client number matches the steam required.

how do you know?

--edit--
also, not to mention, they can put the game out to be gold on monday and have 2 good weeks of production time to still work on source code, that is if they deem the leak damage to be not SO huge.

They never annouced it. They never even went GOLD yet.

The only possible way Valve could stay on track for the Holiday 2003 release is if they remove all the Online Multiplayer stuff from the game and just give us the Single Player game - WHICH IS FINE WITH ME.

Valve was originally planning on releasing several versions of the game:

1. A Partial, Single Player only retail version $49.99
2. A Full, SinglePlayer w/ Multiplayer retail verison $54.99
3. A Full, Single Player and/orMultiplayer STEAM version $49.99
4. A Full, Single Player and/or Multiplayer STEAM streamed version $9.99 monthly subscription

Valve COULD just release the Single Player only versions without worrying about people getting their PCs hacked. Nobody needs to go online with the Single Player Version and they can get patches through End-User downloads. This way we can avoid Steam altogether.

why only $5 more for MP? Most people spend all their time with that. (I don't) Give me SP for $30! :D

it would take way too long to change the source code enough to make the stolen code useless, it would be time for hl3 by then... the best thing they can do is release the game so people will start buying it instead of dling it. then they can patch what ever goes wrong down the road... just my $.02

i honestly sort of agree with c0de here... it change EVERYTHING in the source code that would render the hacker's stolen source useless would take ages most likely. however, i don't know enough about coding etc. to determine that, but it's just my 2 cents also ;)

Apparently Steam was compromised when the source code was stolen right? Well if Steam is going to be ready for a November 18, 2003 release of CS:CZ, then it could be ready for HL2 also. We also don't know just how long it would take Valve to fix HL2's source code to protect against the hackers. We just need to wait for ValvE's statement on this, if it is even gonna happen.

Did anybody else notice that on Best Buys website it says:

Number of CD-ROM: 1

Online Play Internet: No

this is good. maybe they said **** it, we'll release the single now, and work on the multi afterwards.

edit: meaning release the single player now so everyone can play, then re-write the code for the multi and fix steam, then release a patch for muiltplayer on their newly reworked steam... genious!

wish they would release the SP first, im starting to freak bigstyle :p

I've had it preordered for months in anticipation of September 30. These past few days, I've been wrestling with whether to cancel the preorder or just ride it out. If it starts getting to be late-November and there's still no word from Valve, I'll probably cancel it then.

ALIENS ALIENS ALIENS SAID IT!!! OMG!!! im such an ALIENS fan, yay! it finnally paid off!! [Riply says it to Burke]

anyway, stop pulling things out of ur ass people. Gabe only mentioned putting out 3 version [the 9.99 /mo thing with SP only in stores, the regular game, and the special edition with dvd. thats it, no pricing, no anything.]

I'm having hard time believing that Valve would release HL2 before Christmas. I mean, if CS:CZ is coming out in late November, what's the point of releasing another title to compete with the sales? I suppose they could release it in early December, but wouldn't that be too close to both CS:CZ and Christmas?

You can always hope, though... :)

That'd be pretty cool if multiplayer is, indeed, pretty effed up at this point. I'd play the singleplayer first anyway... then, if it still comes with the SDK... I can work on a mod until the multiplayer is released if it isn't already by the time I'm finished with the singleplayer.

anybody who plays online is gonna have broad band..so i don't see the problem making it a download over steam.

3 versions of Half-lfie 2 will be released. A "Wal-mart" version will only contain teh singlepayer of Hl2 and will cost less than the other two. The most expensive verison will be the Collector's Edition which, in addition to MP and Sp will have some extra goodies like t-shirt maybe, manual with Valve sigs and stuff. The "regular" or standard version will come with MP and SP only. So it is possible that Valve may release teh SP version only then the other versions at later dates but if you buy the "Wal-mart" version (only sp) don't expect to download the mp portion at a later date.

That is false. I play online with dialup. I have friends who work for my local ISP, and they will run servers. If I play on their server, I can get pings of 100-150.

Downloading a huge file just for multiplayer is not something I want to do.

Do not generalize and assume like that. It simply makes you look like an ass.

I dont think cs:cz will be a problem for sales if hl2 came out soon after.
Just look at all the people who play hl just for cs, probably never play through hl.

Makes sense, except that Condition Zero was already planned for a release around this time even before Half Life 2 was delayed. So it seems they were already prepared to launch two titles at the same time.

I really think CZ is going to be more popular on consoles than PC anyway, but that's just my prediction.

ok i'm gonna try to make it quick and put all known facts together.

1.Valve got hacked around 19th Sept. They HAD to know what was stolen what was NOT within few days.

2. Now they're saying CS:CZ is going to be released via store chains AND Steam. Put 1 and 1 together and you should get that they KNOW Steam code IS NOT compromised.

3. TO all of you thinking Valve HAS to rewrite Source code , you're mostly wrong. All Quake engines were stolen either month before release OR weeks after their respective debuts. Epic's PR guy said they had their code leaked when UT was about to released. So only thing that's different in this case is that it wasnt actually LEAKED by some employee but stolen by hacker. If you think that by having SOurce code you're going to be able to get into somebody s computer you're wrong. Quake code was released to public long ago and there're still servers out there still playing multiplayer without being compromised.

Mp and Sp $49.99
Sp ??? $29.99???

VALVe isn't going to charge 54.99 for the full game, whoever said that is wrong.

I have to pay 10 a month for multiplayer - its not like a regular FPS - its like planetside!!!!-I want multiplayer/singleplayer-

You have to pay to play MP ? thats gay .... thats not good for Valve.

i dont think that is correct ^

you pay the 10 dollars per month for any other mods valve comes out with...like DoD or CS2....you won't have to go out and buy these

you won't have to pay to play multiplayer
