is this the best card for around 200 right now the 9800 pro? should i consider a nvidia card alternative? oh and it has to be agp

At around the same price the 6600 is a good deal, with slightly higher benchmarks. But it's not TOO big of a difference to merit overall choosing that over, especially if there is a price difference. But if you find a good deal on a 6600, go for it.

Get the 6600. Both cards are pretty much equal. Like RakuaiTenjin said, the 6600 will have a little higher benchmarks. You will not notice too much of a difference between cards.

read here for a direct comparision between the 9800 pro and the 6600GT. You can see that in all benchmarks the 6600GT is ahead of the 9800 pro.

To fully guage a cards rendering power you need to bench it at higher resolutions as games are not as CPU bound at such resolutions and the cards have to work MUCH harder. Notice the benchmark scores for the 6600GT at 1600x1200 are leaps and bounds above the 9800 pro.

1600x1200 scores

Doom 3 106.7% faster
HL2 VST 32.8% faster
UT2004 1.8% faster
Far cry 20.1% faster
Halo 49.1% faster
RTCW ET 2.7%
Battlefield:v 28.3%
Sims 2 21.9

You can see that in some scores they are pretty close but in others the 6600gt streaks ahead!!!

I'm not so sure about the 6600GT.

I recently tried out a friends 6800 (which is meant to be a better card than the 6600GT) on my pc and found that in HL2 it performs noticably worth than my 9800 pro.

Other games were a different case - with the 6800 pulling ahead (it also gave an extra 2500 points in 3dmark)

You cant compare graphics cards on a different PC set ups no matter if they are similar or not...

I wasn't, I was comparing them on mine ;)

It's good for rendering 3D workstation type graphics but stick with the gamers cards for 3D games. ;)

I was going to stick with my 9800 PRO. Actually, I was thinking about buying a 6600 GT AGP. The 9800 PRO is good, but the benchmarks for the 6600 is a lot better than the 9800 PRO.

if you have a 9800 pro already dont bother upgrading to 6600gt save up and buy something better

I just bought a Radeon 9800..

sigh, for 10 extra I could've gotten 6600 GT :(

where can i get a 6600gt (agp) for around 200? ive only seen the one on newegg but thats 240.

I don't think it's wprth ugrading a 9800 pro to a 6600 gt.

As cschaef13 said - wait a little while and buy a better card ......... it'll be better value for money.
