What is the best music of any video game ever?

I would have to say my favorite is Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Halo had one hell of a soundtrack. I even bought the CD that was released of the in-game music....excellent orchestrations.

Deus Ex
Half-Life 2

I had others in mind while playing but i cant remember.

I liked the tunes from the Max Payne series (even though there wasn't much of it).

Perfect Dark had the best variety in a shooter that I can remember. Deuse Ex was great as well.

(...and of course the Half-Life series :) ).

I would have to say my favorites would be all the tunes from the Megaman X series.

It would have to be: MTV Music Generator 3: This Is the Remix, you make your own music :).

Halo 2 (pretty much the same as the original, but I liked it better)
Half-Life 2
Final Fantasy 7 (I remember Dad asking me to mute it on the world map, but I still loved it :D) and to a lesser extent 8.

Doom on the PSX had a soundtrack that was ten times better than the PC. :)

Silent Hill had a great theme tune as well (as did the second one, though it was a bit flat in comparison), very creepy and sad; a far cry from the jarring industrial that peppered the rest of the game. I always thought it would fit the second's story so much better, but alas, what can you do? :)

The Metal Gear games always had top production values, especially when it came to music.

Suikoden and Vagrant Story on the PSX as well, both brilliant. :)

And FF8 has the best music I've heard from a Final Fantasy game. Ever. *lynched*

Knights of the old Republic 2:
Beautiful and original music which conveys an "old Star Wars"-feel like nothing has done before, you simply have to love it if you like Star Wars.

Outcast:
Magically performed by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra, this soundtrack is what makes the game.

Halo & Halo 2:
Fantastic orchestrations and great electronic tunes. Marty O' Donnel is the man.

Max Payne 2:
The main theme is one of the best themes ever in my opinion, and the other tracks in the game fit in perfectly.

Agreed.
I liked Deus Ex's moody atmospheric music, very fitting for the theme of the game: ie grey death, dark fearsome high-tech future.

Sort of semi classical war music, I think. Great stuff.

I loved all the above music.

Also I like some Command and Conquer music.

Oh come on the best music always came from Metal Gear Solid, Final Fansty and Dues Ex!

I knew you'd post the Morrowind soundtack TDE :)

It was just so fitting and helped immerse you into the setting, there's this one really catchy song I remember when your out exploring :D At nightime the musics very fitting, and it was just so cool to stare up at the stars heh :D

That, and all of the super mario theme tunes. They kicked some arse alright.

I'm sure I've forgoten some of the great ones, but hands down, the best game music ever goes to :
Grand Theft Auto 3

Worth Mentioning: (In order)

Tony Hawk 2
Halo
HL2
Archon - Atari 400/800
The Eidolon - Atari 400/800

Half Life 2 has some pretty damn forgetteble music.

As a rule I play all games with the music off. I don't know about you but creaping around killing people to dance/trance/rock or whatever crap the developers were into at the time doesn't interest me.

The only game that I allow music to stay on is the GTA series. Therefore GTA:Vice City wins best game music hands down.

Best game soundtrack of all time bar none is the Grim Fandango soundtrack - it's absolutely fantastic.

Oh, and Vice City - even though I don't officially like '80s music... :)

My favorite soundtrack is probably Final Fantasy VI... a pretty bizarre choice I suppose. The thing is, FFVI has some excellent tunes that aren't done full justice by the sound capabilities of the SNES... the arranged versions are fantastic, though I suppose they don't really count. The overworld theme (Tina/Terra) is a permenant favorite of mine.

It seems to me that most game soundtracks contain one billiant standout song and then fill the game up with average, poor or simply not interesting songs... whether by fault of the composers or simply a requirement of the type of game. Deus Ex for instance had an excellent title theme, but had forgetable tunes for the rest of the game. I'd say the same of Halo, the Metal Gear Solid games and the majority of the FF games in particular: One or Two Brilliant tracks poorly backed up with a bunch of weak tunes (or worse - the same tune with 40 different variations).

The best use of any song in any soundtrack for me, has to be Barber's Agnus Dei in the original Homeworld though. The rest of the soundtrack was pretty good (though a lot of it was just ambience, the "Industrial Arabic" wailing for the rest was strangely captivating) but nothing quite matches the scenes in which the used that one song...

:O Only two others said OoT?? Come on, Sarias Song? Gerudo Valley? I loved the game and the music. Admittedly, FF is a close second.

For me, it has to be the FF series with ChronoTrigger and ChronoCross following close behind.

Vice City was good yeah, because they used actually real music.

And I once again agree, Grim Fandango. Best. Soundtrack. Ever.
