Best Game Music?

C&C - Mechanical Man

Red Alert - Hell March

Grim Fandango, no contest. Every single tune in there is a classic, and easily a rival to some film scores out there. That said, I might be a bit biased, being an existentialist hep-cat and all.

I haven't played many of the games mentioned, but a few personal favs would be:

THE DUKE NUKEM GRABBAG THEME! (rocks so hard)
Grim Fandango
the 7th Guest (love it. Except the swing vocal number.)
some tunes from Marble Madness (3rd level, I think)
bunch of Castlevania series stuff
Mario series
Halo

All WW2 games(except COD) have absolutly heartfilled music

BIA sounds like it has a very good theme on it's hands

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory

Electronic musician Amon Tobin performed the entire soundtrack and it rules. Not only is Amon Tobin one of my favourite artists of all time, but this is probably his best album yet. GO GIVE IT A LISTEN!

Samples here

Final Fantasy. PWNS.

Mostly. To my mind. Well, FFVIII does to me.

SSX 3 has the best music ever in a video game until now.

otherwise i guess FF7, the music makes the game.
I really love some of UT's techno tracks.
blast corps had some wild tunes :p

total annihilation was a ridiculously good sound track, infact i have it in my winamp playlist, and FFX i loved too :)

I know this topic is 5 days old, but...

Quake2
Unreal Tournament 2004
And Zelda: Ocarina of Time

EDIT: Damn, forgot I already posted in here :p

Interesting

Great thread - I'm fascinated that there is such a variety of favorites. From what I've gathered, Halo doesn't have a bad 'track (I agree), Deus Ex, Ocarina of Time, Grim Fandango, Metal Gear Solid, and Final Fantasy (none of which I have played) appear to be favorites. I personally turn off music in all games except for two: Halo and Alice. I realize Alice is an old game, but I find the music is SO fitting and as opposed to making the game seem like a music video that you can play in, this one sets and accents the moods.

Quoted for truth!!
Mechanical Man - "I'm a mechanical, I'm a mechanical, I'm a mechanical man." Classic.
Hell March - Nothing beats immolating and exploding stuff to heavy metal (forgive me if I didn't pick the precise subgenre it falls under).

But I'll always have a special place in my heart for the Wipeout XL (or Wipeout 2097 for you Brits) soundtrack. I was listening to FSOL - We Have Explosive just this morning.

Hooray for Tantalus, creator of successful threads! (was there for #300-#1001 of the Signs of Too Much Half-Life)

STARCRAFT!

I get teary eyed just thinking about it, having played starcraft for half of my life (7 years... so not quite half, i turn sixteen next month), so it's a major nostalgia trip.

Half-Life 2's ST is absolutely great too. MGS2, FF7, FF9, and several others all pwn too.

Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow.
Tempo of the music changes acording to the action.
Love the theme track especially. :)

I think WoW has one of the best soundtracks for its type of game. Most games like Wipeout have music that does'nt really suit the game.

Best soundtrack has to be the FF series, no questions asked.

Mine will be from the chronicles of riddick:escape from butcher bay.

Darwinia

Because Introversion know how to use music to make something damn moving.

Just right now played the demo of that!! Its pretty damn good. Didnt really notice the music in the demo.

There is music in the full thing. But they only introduce it at specific times (Like completing a mission.) But the music they intoduce once you destroy the first ant infestation and the doctor explains about the Darwinian "Life Cycle" just makes the whole thing that more moving.
