Best Old Games

Three Pages and no mention of Cannon Fodder?

You guys suck! :p

I liked Beneath a Steel Sky, but less as a game and more as a testament to what people could do with those crappy crappy computers of the time. =3

omf 2097 -- love that game.

overkill -- just so much fun, love the upgrades and that.

the first thing i could find was an entry on a blog of a ms employee.

http://blogs.msdn.com/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2005/11/02/488065.aspx

i remember it having a sidebar, but i can't remember 'gadgets' and 1 or 2 other things on there.

http://www.classicdosgames.com/epic.html - it has some links to a shareware version too !

http://www.dosgames.com/g_spa.php - has the shareware download too.

i just tried it on xp, it ran fine though it's really slow in 'reacting' to when i press arrows keys. :(

so fun, heheh.

edit: return fire on pc (like win 95 i think) was insanely fun, especially 2 player.. used to always play it with my brother and friends.

Return Fire... you could control a helicopter, tank, and a jet right?
That game was pretty fun. n.n

How about The Neverhood? Underrated clay-mation adventure game n.n

OMF was fun!

My most nostalgic memories are X-Com and Wolf3d

umm, i could only remember the helicopter, jeep and tank, but i checked and there was a 4th, the armoured support vehicle.. close. ;)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Return_Fire

man, the jeep was soo freaking fun, it was incredibly fast so you could just zoom around inside their base, and the floating tyres were cool.

hehe, i remember trying to outrun the missile from the sub, good times.

sadly, i never got into the neverhood though i did play it a couple of times and had friends who did.

edit: okay, i've been browsing through a ton of old games sites, and my list below is quite large -- i'm not posting anything, all of these games i spent alot of time on, not just simply played them a bit and passed them by, so sorry about the size of the post. D:

alot of them i've just seen the name and i suddenly remembered them, or part of them.

what about crusader: no remorse and crusader: no regret.. they were alot of fun, i remember getting outside of the map, lol.

Crusader%201%20-%20No%20Remorse1.jpg

Return%20To%20Zork1.jpg

also, destruction fun with desert strike, urban strike and jungle strike !

Desert%20Strike3.png

a truly under-rated and excellent game that wasn't too popular, duck tales.. it was filled with mini games (taking photos of animals @ yellowstone park, wandering through caves, jump levels and so on), you got to travel the world and so on.. and, nothing beat diving into your massive pile of money in hope of finding a rare coin. ;)

Duck%20Tales1.png

also, in search of dr. riptide.. just alot of fun. :)

In%20Search%20of%20Dr%20Riptide3.png

virgin interactive put out some excellent side-scrolling games like the lion king and aladdin.

Lion%20King2.png

Aladdin7.png

one of the original mindless shooters, mdk, i still remember the awkard way he ran, and seeing green goo come out of the bad guys as you shot them.

MDK%20(Murder%20Death%20Kill)6.jpg

terminal velocity was repetitive/basic, but you could still spend hours playing it.

Terminal%20Velocity3.jpg

tubular worlds.. more mindless shooting fun.

Tubular%20Worlds2.png

tyrian.. yet again, mindless shooting fun though upgrades where awesome, and finding the 'secrets' like the carrot ship, and shooting fruit was awesome. ;) me and my brother would always play this 2 player @ our grand parent's house.

Tyrian%2020005.png

zone 66.. yes, another flying shooting game, though this one had awesome use of bombs and other different things.

Zone%20665.png

netstorm, a creative 'rts' type game.. for those of you who like turret defence and similar ums (use map settings) maps for starcraft and warcraft3 on battlenet, you'd probably like this game.

NetStorm%20-%20Islands%20at%20War8.jpg

hehe, syndicate wars was fun, though my parents didn't like me playing it a long time ago.

Syndicate%20Wars5.png

the original warcraft, better than wc2, wc3 and wow combined.

Warcraft6.png

constructor.. indepth game, alot of fun, i mean, what beats sending thugs out, or getting rid of squatters ? ;)

Constructor4.jpg

sim tower - i used to play this in primary school alot, they even let me take the cd home and install it !

Sim%20Tower2.png

magic carpet - just an original and fun game.

Magic_carpet_game.gif

hi octane - one of the very few racing games i've liked.

Hi_Octane_screenshot.jpg

dyna blaster - lol, to get this to work you had to plug in this thing it came with onto the back, i think it was on the serial port or something.

Dyna%20Blaster2.png

ignition - my all time favourite racing game.. i can still hear the sound when you used the boost.

Ignition1.jpg

inca - just a weird, cool game.

Inca4.gif

the incredible machine - alot of frustrating memories, but still incredibly fun.

Incredible%20Machine%2024.png

jazz jack rabbit - just a good game

Jazz%20Jackrabbit%2024.png

jetpack - another classic i played heaps.

Jetpack6.png

micro machines - the original.. good, solid game.

Micro%20Machines2.png

pipe mania - like with the inc. machine, just alot of frustrating fun. :)

Pipe%20Mania1.png

Raptor3.png

scorched earth - THE game.

Scorched%20Earth2.png

skyroads - man, this game got so hard.

Skyroads%203-D4.jpg

the island of dr. brain - great 'thinking' game.

The%20Island%20of%20Dr.%20Brain7.png

wacky wheels - hehe, just addictive and fun.

Wacky%20Wheels2.png

where in the world is carmen san diego - just an excellent, interesting game.

Cybernator and sonic 2 deserve a mention. 1992 was a great year for games.
Oh and not to forget street fighter 2.

Mario 64, hands down.

I just remembered I used to replay The Daedalus encounter countless of times but never finishing it.

Some of those games are really great. I had the shareware version of Raptor for a long time and I loved it, then my dad bought me the full game which was even better. I beat it over and over until I had enough money to buy every weapon for my jet, even though you couldn't carry them all. I eventually could buy 5 layers of phase shield for every mission :D Tyrian was great too. The first game I ever remember playing was Commander Keen, how I loved that series.

That Ignition game looks like a lot of fun.

I was at yours, more likely.

My first taste in terms of gaming was in like '93, playing Duckhunt on my big brother's old NES that I still have around here somewhere :p
I was three years old then!<3 I usually just put the pistol DIRECTLY on the TV and shot, because I was too sucky at aiming from a-far.

Maniac Mansion :O
Loom

Other obscure Lucasfilm games that are impossible to beat without a walkthrough :D

Downloading maniac mansion now

I got through Loom without a walkthrough, but I was playing on the easiest level.

King's Quest V was impossible to get through without a walkthough. So many "puzzles" where the solution was illogical. The desert was impossible unless you had the time to map out every possible combination of routes you could take before dying miserably and having the narrator mock you :p. I couldn't handle how slowly he walked across the screen so I had to look up the desert part. Then, there's the thing where you have to keep certain items for later and if you use them and don't have a saved game from that far back, you have to start the entire game over. (It is also impossible to backtrack after you get past certain areas, so even if you tried to go back to retrieve another of the item you need - which is also impossible since you can only get ONE PIE!!! - you're still screwed.)

I really love that game though. It's funny :D.

can you remember how to get the carrot ship ? i forgot. D: the secret levels are so fun, i remember how you had to shoot a certain rock to get into them, hah.

Anyone wanna sort of offhand mention a site that may have some methods of which to obtain these games without me getting off my ass and/or paying money? I was looking for Raptor (had shareware for years, never played full) but I could only buy it for $16 :(

Anyone remember an old game called "Keen"? Or something. Damn, if anyone finds a screenshot of that game I'll love them. Was one of the first games I played

They're all there. "Commander keen", it's under arcade.

And some screenies for some lovin

I see no mention of System Shock or System Shock 2 D:
Or the original Warcrafts?! Or Command & Conquer : Tiberian Dawn?!
Or Dune?! Or or or Mario?! PACMAN?!?!??!?!!?!!??!!?? PONG?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!??????????!!!!!!!!!??????!! *explodes*
Tired much.

Streets of Rage was a blast!

Commander Keen was id Software's pre-Wolfenstein work.

Kings Bounty was something I have fond memories of, kind of a precursor to Heroes of Might and Magic.

No one mentioned worms. :|
i begged my parents to buy it for me when it came out, it was like $90 which was insane back than.. but they did get it, and i am forever in their debt.

besides the awesome cutscenes, it was just incredibly fun and addiciting.

i loved entering in the random codes for levels, than writing down which ones i liked and so on.

also, worms reinforcements, worms united, worms pinball and worms rally. ^_______^

Right, so I downloaded that Ignition game, and it crashes whenever I try to host a multiplayer game. Is there a fix?

I remember my dad bought a 486DX when it was first released here in the UK. It was a whopping £1000

Worms (worms united + the reinforcements expansion pack) ****ing ruled! anyone remember the map "pirates"? had hours of fun on that one.

ignition was great, swedish game and all! raptor, jazz jackrabbit 1 + 2, desert strike all bring back great memories. oh and yeah, vanguard ace was like raptor but 20 times more fun.

i grew up with the amiga, practically got games like turrican, agony and beast with the breastmilk
