BF2 Special Forces

I played a rotation on the new map Warlord late last night as a medic and DAMN I had my work cut out for me. Everybody was going assault, sniper and spec ops trying out the new equipment and I was the only medic on a team of 25. The map is very Karkand-like that features a palace at the northern edge of the map that has 3 floors and offers quite a bit of indoor to outdoor battles.

It was really cool sitting on the balcony with my squad taking down squads of infantry that would charge the embassy. Some would throw their hooks up and we'd blast them as they came up. We were the only squad in the embassy so when they stopped trying to just get up the balcony they resorted to going around the back to flank us. By now everybody started to spawn at the embassy to help out (it was our last point) and we had a huge firefight to defend it. The rear of the building has 3 levels with open, long hallways that face the courtyard and enemies were just flooding in. Somebody brought an apc around the back and started dominating us for a few seconds (we were all packed in pretty tight) then like 4 AT rockets flew at him and blew him up :) It was really intense. The opposition was shooting gas grenades up to the balconies while their teammates threw some grapple hooks to avoid the staircases that had become choke points due to the support classes blasting the majority of people that came up (like shooting fish in a barrel). Eventually we won by 5 tickets and they had flooded the hallways so whenever you spawn you're RIGHT in the action.

In the end I only had like 15 kills and like 8 deaths but I had the top teamwork score of 43 :P Those defibs got their workout for the day.

2nd impression. Even better! I am getting the hang of the night maps. I really like Nightflight. It's a battle for an airport in the desert. Lots of dark spots. Hiding in the shadows is pretty cool. I got so into it that I instinctively tapped '3' when I needed nightvision. That's the default in SplinterCell. Weird, I never thought I would feel like Sam Fisher when playing BF2 .... Another cool nightmap is Devil's Perch. It's a battle for a peninsula, but very unlike Sharqi. Grappel hook and slide thingy can be put to good use in this one. I also played Warlord. It's is a cross between Mashtuur and Karkand. What struck me on this one (but applies to most maps) is that there is so much more indoor space in Special Forces. You finally get to enter almost all buildings, and some of em even have working elevators. I also found at least one shortcut to a flag in Surge (a battle for a launch platform, including rocket). You can sneak thru a couple of shafts to reach a ladder that leads to the top of the control tower where a flag is located, all of it indoors. That's also a map I liked btw. My overall impression is very good so far. 8.9/10 if I had to rate it. It doesn't get a nine coz there aren't a lot of official euro servers. I played on US east coast servers mostly, on which I get a 100 / 125 ping. I am used to 20/30 ....

Special mention:
<civilian vehicles ftw>

I like this far more than the original BF2. Although the weapons are unbalanced, the maps are actually perfectly balanced, and, just like everyone's said, really fun/cool. I've played every map, and it just plain rules.

when i try to install SF, it goes for awhile then gets stuck on the European help files, and it stays there for an hour or two, i have stopped it and started it back up 3 or 4 times so far and it keeps getting stuck in the same place. i have no idea what the hell is wrong and its really pissing me off...could someone help?

Dude on the SF2 website theres already a NEW patch for all the people who downloaded it and had problems. I'm scared to buy it. Take a look in the SF2 EA forums and it's completely filled with pages of complaints.

A word of caution: that patch is ONLY for people that bought SF thru EA downloader. It's NOT for people that bought it thru retail.

well it works now and i have to say that it was worth the trouble, i just let it set over night and it finally worked, this game kicks uber ass! i want to play online now :D

does anybody know where to find a list of the new awards? any help would greatly be appreciated

No clue, UBAR doesn't have the Special Forces awards up yet but I'd bet they'll be the first.

I just saw it on my neighbours PC (one of the shops here released it earlier) and it looks fun (infantry combat ftw!). The grapple hook is really nice

I think I'll buy it tommorow on my way home, though I'm still thinking of waiting for a fix. Lots of ppl even with uber rigs are getting crap performance in MP. My neighbour's PC was running it fine in SP but in MP it was 15fps and looked even worse than that.

:/

Sniping and knifing in the dark is something id love to do in a game like this. Ill defenently buy it asap :D

My über rig runs it very smoothly. No probs at all.

Does it run worse than BF2, however? Better? No difference?

The loading times are a bit longer, esp. the night maps. All maps run as smooth as BF2, except The Iron Gator, the map that's on a carrier with loads of indoor space. That lags like a 300 pound biatch.

Yeah, i had many a lag out on the Iron Gator, glad to see im not alone in that tbh- otherwise the maps are a blast- Devil's Perch and Leviathan have a more arcade type feel to them- great fun- if you dont like BF2 bcause of vehicle whores GET THIS- you can hide from them, play stealth/rambo/ support, whatever, its awesome.

However it does seem to have made my regular BF2 run a bit slow/laggy, anyone else had this?

i havent really noticed anything reguarding the regular bf2... :/ , still runs great for me

i think its great that people with the expansion can still play with the vanilla bf2 crowd :)
adds more variety to a great game
good for DICE/EA

This expansions to gimmicky in my opinion.(yes,i got it)
Feels more like an exp pack for the Joint Ops series then bf2.
I doubt that many ppl will buy or play it in the near future.

I know I won't buy that shit. What a way to earn a shitload more money.*sigh*

*sigh
it seems that no matter what ea do with this game people are never happy...

i mean eight new maps, 10+ new vehicles, completely new gameplay, new weapons and equipment, support for the original game keeping both alive
jetskis!
grappling hooks!
pickup trucks!
night vision!
what gripes do you seriously have?

got it today, after some headaches caused by the new patch i got it running, played only 2 maps so far, ghosttown and warlord, ghosttown was greatfun, theres so many different routes around the city and the grappling hook and zipline can come in very handy...

whats all the starlight & wilko about though with the brits?:rolling:

warlord was very choppy, kept stuttering alot, i thought i had seen the last of my stuttering with this game when i went to medium settings, very poor fps ;(

gameplay seems alot more fastpaced, the new choppas are awesome, but i really like the grappling hook, particurly in areas where theres only 1 entrance ,usually a stairway thats snipers love to camp, you can now totally bypass this annoyance, need moretme with it...

I dunno. Perhaps thats really how they talk. Besides it sounds cool. (Although I think a part of me died when someone asked "Whats with all the British voices?" :dozey: )

That said, BF2 : SF is so much better than Vanilla BF2 that its silly. It manages to make BF2 even more awesome. And the CQB is great fun. Plus, the grappling hook is amazingly awesome.

In fact the whole thing is awesome.

The problem with BF2 is the friggin shitloads of bugs there is in it, EA have not madean effort tyo tackle these bugs, they have released a shit source code, with errors everywhere u look. Also people who are meeting or going over the recommended system specs are having trouble playing with top gfx, this game is bullshit. I wish DICE never got bought out from EA, as they made DC & that mod was ace & still is now.

Also with you been able to play normal BF2 maps with the SF weapons, there is allready alot of teamkilling going on to get these SF weapons, shame on u EA what a joke. I will never buy SF unless they get their act together & fix the engine.

I got it today and played for a few hours. I like it, the hook and zipline are great fun! It runs kinda crap sometimes, that's true but it's still playable. I hope there will be an optimization fix or whatever soon.

"Requesting starlight!" :P

Finally got to play it with Jimbo today. The [DUDE] SQUAD ruled supreme. I wonder what the Sharqi of this expansion will be ....

yeah today was good, liked the russian maps alot, very big, not laggy, damn iron gaitor was SOOOOOOOOoo choppy, virtually unplayable, i dont really like the map either, the chopper pilots always seem to come 1st, feels like the kubra dam of this expansion, some other maps can be stuttery too....

damn i love the grappling hook, its so useful...

OK, my take on the maps after about 16 hours of playing.
- Night Flight. My fav atm. It has a great flow to it. I like how you really have to use nightvision well to play it right. The terminal building is one of the best choke points ever.
- Devil's Perch. Beautifully laid out. Approaching the Asylum from the back and having to climb up all those flights of stairs with the great ambient noise on the background gives it a very special forces feeling.
- Leviathan. The third night map has its flags a bit too far apart so the fighting tends to be a bit unfocused (pun intended). I do like the night vision in the attack chopper tho.
- Warlord. This map is a bit like the best of Karkand, Mashtuur and Sharqi with added indoor fighting for the two most northern flags. It's grapple hook / zipline paradise. It's not very original, but it's still a lot of fun.
- Ghost Town. My fav day map and the best urban map in the expansion imo. Countless ways to the flags, thanks to grapple hook and zipline. Offers the best possibilities for vertical combat.
- Mass Destruction. Rebels ftw! A big industrial area with the flags perfectly spaced. A lot of different routes to the flags, but enough choke points to keep the fighting focused.
- Purge. It's prolly the biggest map of the expansion. It has the least 'special forces feeling' of all the maps but it's still a lot of fun. The spaceport is very cool altho it's a bit odd that the control room is basically on the launching platform .....
- The Laggin' Gator. It's a very cool map in theory but the lag makes it basically unplayable. Plus the carrier could have used more points of entry. The MEC have a very hard time at first, getting aboard.

I like the fact that you can unlock stuff in SF and play with it in the normal BF2. ive got the scar-L and scar-H in the normal BF2.

I thought you couldn't unlock the scar-h in normal bf, only the f2000.

I never asked for those to be happy. Personally, I'm quite happy with BF2, although it could have a few less bugs in it, I still enjoy playing it.

I'll tell you shall I? The consipcuous lack of an AN-94 for the spetsnaz. thats what. They dont use the AK-101. Its in 5.56 - not a russian calibre. Its not been adopted, even nominally for use with any russian unit. It was desigened to be sold to forgein markets out side of russia. And the SAS have the wrong weapons (G36 series/F2000/M92FS/M24 - they should have C7/8s, SIG P226s, etc). The Navy SEALS have the wrong Pistol (M92FS - they should have a SIG P226).

Why? why do EA and DICE have to make so very many glaring errors.

And i want the KSK in too ;(
[/end rant]

I freaking love Mass Destruction. The weapon sets are equal, so it feels balanced, but besides that the level itself is just excellent.

I think it's already been declared that DICE & EA aren't exactly realistic game creators...
