Bioshock world premiere video tonight on IGN

You expressed your opinion and I expressed mine. It's not my fault if you feel insulted. What you wrote made honestly made me laugh, I'm sure you have your reasons for liking Crysis more.

In my opinion Crysis will be a big flop just like Far Cry was. Also in my opinion Bioshock stands to be more of a success due to all of the great features it boasts including how it's meant as a successor to the great System Shock. Crysis seems to boast Hype and pretty jungles.

Whoa whoa buddy Im not insulted we're talking bout video games here. I just dont like your attitude, but thats another story. O and Far Cry was far from a flop I cant believe you said that. Like the game or not you cant call it a flop!

Did you finish System Shock 2?

I played it when it was released but i was so young that it scared me too much to continue playing. Then around 2003 i reinstalled it while i was waiting for Half-Life 2 to come out and beat it. ****ing amazing game, definitely one of the best i've ever played. And that was a butt ugly game when it came out as well. By 2003 it was still pretty god damn ugly to look at.

And even though i usually dont do this sorta thing, for anyone out there who thinks Crysis will be better than Bioshock, look at each company's past games, its evident which company will deliver which goods.

Crytek will deliver graphically, whereas Irrational will deliver everything else.
Far Cry was pretty but most people were divided on the gameplay. Pretty much everyone thought it was great until the trigens came in, then it became divided. Whereas everyone whose played System Shock 2 or Deus Ex know those games are ****ing phenomenal, but not entirely good-looking.

Yah I never finished or got that far into it. Looks like Im gonna have to see what Ive been missing this weekend...after the bars of course! As for Deus Ex that game was the shizznit son!

I hope the game is long. Most games like this that have all these new innovations are 6 hours long.

Hahahaha, love the commentator. Being all intense, and then "Oooooh, look out for those fish!" xD

Looks groovy. Definitely looking forward to this, but still a little sceptical. Just gonna have to wait and see how it plays (hopefully it doesn't control too sluggishly on 360, won't be running this on PC).

Looks pretty nice.

I'm completely digging the post-WWII (or was it pre-WWII?) environments.

After watching the hi-def video again, I believe the Little Girls should have a larger line of sight. She literally had to be no more than a foot away from the dead body to notice it. I'm hoping this isn't the same with normal enemies through the game.

Looks like a synthesis. Some pre-war, some post-war, and a bit of 50's futurist architecture.

lol, fish

The only thing Crysis will be good for is the mind-melting (good thing) graphics. That being said, I still will get it.

Bioshock is about as far from the word "generic" as you can get. How many big title FPS/RPG hybrids have there been? I can name about 4. System Shock, System Shock 2, Deus Ex, and Deus Ex: Invisible War. Apart from DX: IW, they are all considered some of the greatest games of all time, yet nobody has made a real attempt at following their legacy. Plus, there has never been a game with a setting like Bioshock. Not to my knowledge, anyway.

I know Ken Levine says that Bioshock will redefine FPS games, but I don't agree. I think it's a hybrid of genres like its predecessors. FPS games will probably not change too much because many people are too dumb to think of different ways to solve problems, too impatient to listen to audio logs, and don't care about good storytelling. They just want to blow stuff up; Halo 2 probably sold more on its first day than Dues Ex sold in total. So I doubt Bioshock will change FPS games, but it will probably open the door to a new direction of games. Of course, that door was already opened by System Shock, but people were too lame to go through it.

Bioshock simply look stunning in every aspect, the water looks amazeing probley the best water graphics ive seen in a game so far.I like how its slow paste and not all 'shoot all the monsters and get to the end' type of game.

Im not super hyped about it but it does look like a game i will check out I really like the big daddy, little sister thing you dont really see that kind of thing in a game is there 2 diffrent types of (big daddy)?im shore i sore 2 pictures with big daddy in it but he looked diffrent could be me just being a crack head i supose :bounce:

To rate the video ill probley give it a 8/10.:cheese:

I'll have a gander at it after my test is over. Looks good from the pre-release coverage PCPP gave it.

You would think that having only one kind of enemy and 2 potentially hostile npcs would make the game repetitive...

I just hope all the splicers, big daddies and "little sisters" don't look the same. :/

You sir, are not being a crack head. I'm pretty sure I saw a different Big Daddy too.

Where are you getting that idea?

Looks like another type of big daddy

Another splicer

http://media.xbox360.ign.com/media/793/793105/img_3909238.html

More splicers

I hope they don't reveal too many more, almost every developer shows us every enemy before the game comes out and I hate that. Even Valve did it, the only enemy that surprised me in HL2 was the poison zombie.

Looks interesting.. but suspensful.

I'm sure each enemy is genetically modified differently, and that there are plenty of enemy types to go around

So can anyone tell me anything about those splicer thing? Are they human or some kind of muated nutheads?

They share almost identical appearance to some of the enemies from Condemned.

Ken Levine said:
The e3 video was a modified version of something we built in March for the first Game Informer cover piece. It was really the first bit of playable BioShock ever made.

We enhanced it for E3 and showed pretty much the same thing at Leipzig. It's now been retired for our new gameplay demonstration which we are slaving away on.

I'm saying this not to make excuses for anything you didn't like, because the videos out there and should be fair game to comment on and criticize. We put it out there to get people's comments on it. But for the crew here who are really into deeply discussing the game, I thought some notes might be helpful. Consider this the read me file for the E3 demo.

The look of the world of Rapture really solidified for the first time when we did this demo. Ditto water visual effects. However, the game has progressed substantially on the visual side since then. I think the next gameplay video will demonstrate what I mean.

The animation system is super rough. We're incorporating Havok's animation system mixed with IG's homebrew stuff.

All the voice acting came from an impromptu short session we did before the demo. The Little Sister will have a full suite of dialog, as will all the AIs in the game. Our goal is to have substantially more character dialog per character than even other IG games.

Weapon effects are first pass. We've just done a new rev on them. I think they are amazing now. Our goal was to exceed the weapon effects in Black, and I think we're going to achieve that (even adjusting for next gen)

Engine was entirely unoptimized. We've just finished our core optimization pass last week. As I mentioned another time, load times and performance were a key technical goal on BioShock.

Plasmid effects are first pass. They have been entirely replaced.

On screen and machine intefaces have not only been redone completely by a new artist, their functionality and feedback has been completely rethought. You'll see more of this soon (maybe I'll even leak a shot or two!)

There are 3 different big daddy's and a whole bunch of splicers in the game, plus skin, powers/weapons and even attachment variations (masks, hats, etc.).

We've hardly begun tune game controller/mouse stuff. It's just not something we do until later after we've done a ton of focus testing on our first pass.

One of the coolest visuals you're going to see down the road is views of the actual underwater buildings from windows in Rapture. That will be soon.

Regarding my voice: I'm not actually a serial killer, but I will be playing an evil clown vending machine in the game. I know you hope I'm kidding, but I'm not. I've also decided to use Jade Raymond from Assassin's Creed to do all our future PR work because she's way hotter than me.

No, it's not a totally new genre, and that has been emphasised by Ken Levine himself. He wants people to understand that it's an innovative FPS, but an FPS all the same.

what innovative? creating war between enemies I don't think so it's new genre for me.

UE3 last I heard, but I'm not 100%, at times they've said a incredibly modified UE2.5, and at other times UE3.. I've also heard someone from the team saying they're using an engine that's a mix of UE3 and UE2.5..>_<

UE3, just as modified as they did with the old 2.5 engine ala water effects.

It always annoys me when Levine names specific examples of games he's going to 'top', or how Bioshock won't be a "corridor crawl" like other shoothers..

Well, most fps are corridor crawlers. The biggest attraction of Bioshock, for me at least, is that it's not.

it seemed corridorish, at least from the video... I sure didn't see any wide open fields to tromp through lol

Having corridors does not make it a 'corridor shooter' - a term used to describe games that push you through a very linear and set path.

An area in which Bioshock should shine by letting you go pretty much wherever you want. Although there will be set objectives of one form or another, but how you get there is more than likley up to the player.

Yea, but I'll believe that when I see it.

Frankly though, I don't care. I'm not against linear gameplay, as long as I have fun reaching that destination, and whether it is linear or not is not detrimental to my ability to have fun.

I supposed it would be a nice change of pace, but to be honest since it's something we haven't even really experienced in the FPS genre before, I can't even comment on how fun it would be, I can only use my imagination to assume what it would be like.

don't misunderstand, I still think this game is beautifull, and I am so looking forward to it!

As am I, whether it is linear or not.

I can't wait.

Looks like System Shock 2, except underwater. Which is of course a good thing, but the only super-creative thing about it is the art design. That being said, it has some of the best art design I've ever seen and would probably be worth playing just for that. Seems like it will be a must-buy game, at least for me.

Completely agree. I enjoy linear routes through games for the exact same reasons, and I'm not bothered what the game opts for, but the free roam in Bioshock isn't what draws me to it. Infact, I'm really not bothered.

It was the ability to choose what you wanted to do (within reason) that set the System Shocks aside from the bunch. There's always a chance this kind of open ended play can end up lacking focus, but not having an invisible hand pushing you along can also increase immersion. Hopefully this will be the case with Bioshock and the many choices presented to the player will lead to some of this emergent gameplay i've been hearing about.

//edit

I've no problem with linear games btw, but it's been a while since we've had a fps that requires much more than following a set path and shooting everything on the way.

I don't mind linear level design so much, as long as it's not too noticeable. What I think could set it apart more is the ability to deal with situations in multiple ways, depending on your play style and the resources available to you. This makes for a far more non-linear experience IMO.

Now, I'm not saying it's revolutionary. Many games have attempted it before, but I think they've only been moderately succesful so far. Bioshock looks like it could be the first game to give the player a good variety of options and force them to weigh up the factors and make real decisions. Also I'm loving that you'll always be scrambling for resources, there's so many games where an abundance of ammo etc. totally ruins the tension.

Here's hoping they nail it.

Just for the sake of nostalgy, I'm playing through SS1 again, and I do have to say I prefer it over SS2.. It's a bloody great game :D

Bioshock looks interesting, I'm not sure how I'll like it but it does look fun with all the choices to be made.
