Bioware+Lucasarts Announcement Today

Companion characters seem to be optional (unless I read wrong). If they're unique and memorable characters I'm all for it. Also, the "twelve full time writers" thing hopefully means the story will be in depth enough to not qualify for basic MMO storytelling.

Lots of marketing yada-yada but it has some interesting morsels of info. I like the fact that factions and light/dark are kept seperate. Not sure on the story emphasis yet. It seems to me Bioware should move in the GW direction with lots of instancing to make that possible. I personally prefer true online games like WoW or LotR: Online. Random encounters make mmorpg's fun imo.

Is EA or SOE involved in the development of this game? It's bound to be shit if either one of them is.

Companion characters sound alot like Heroes in Guild Wars. It's nothing new, and nothing worrisome.

All in all, I've lost much of my fanboy-ism now that I've grown older, but this has rekindled it somewhat.

Johnny T: That was win btw. ^^

I liked KotOR I & II enough to keep an eye on this. While it's true that no MMO has really captured my attention there is always a first.

Twelve full-time writers have been working on the content for this game for years already.
Holy shit!

Eh, I've kind of lost my enthusiasm for Bioware a bit over the last few years. Wouldn't say I'm pissed off or anything, but I'm not entirely sure they could have pulled off another single-player KotoR. Not to the standard of the first game, anyway.

ITT: Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaw the KOTOR franchise didn't go exactly how I wanted it to, and despite not really having all that much information on the game I'm going to bitch about how Bioware has betrayed me.

God damn their shit, how could they do this to me? I wanted singleplayer not MMO! I don't care how many people are working on the story! WHY CAN'T EVERYTHING JUST STAY THE SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAME?!

Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

You're such a f*cking crybaby Darkside. Man up.

I dont like star wars ..there I said it ... /runs

but seriously, will you join my Kotor Online guild; "DEATHJEDININJAKNIGHT BANTAS FROM HELL"?
You don't like Star Wars? I can understand the prequel shit, but.... D:

I can assure you I certainly WON'T be joining your n00b clan neither! :p

Why is having both so inconceivable?
Because both would never, ever happen. They wouldn't need two games if it's in their heads that an MMO will take the industry by storm.

Oh well, colour me a bit dead inside. What's the point in an MMO Lucasarts? Just make the god damn third game for christs' sake.

I'm about as skeptical about this game as I have ever been in my entire life about any video game. I simply WILL NOT play an MMO again in my life so I'll never even try this one, but I still have visions of star wars galaxies running through my mind despite their claims of companions and quality story telling. I don't buy it. Ah well, time will tell.

I like the first two but not the ewok-y one ..stupid care bears, I hate you so very very much with your button noses and oversized eyes

part of the problem is the lore ..Coucilor stupid****face imposed trade sanctions that Pandabear Portman vehemently opposes so she sends jar jar binks as an emissary to halt the cylon raiders from attacking the outpost at Farpoint ...cue battles and lightsabres and garbage disposals and ancestors who will eventually try to kill you and then there's chewie and the christmas special and the argonauts and han solo'd flying the USS Normandy and pew pew

I can assure you I certainly WON'T be joining your n00b clan neither! :p

can I join yours? I'm a good jedideathknightninja!!! <swings lightsabre, breaks lamp>

It's nearly impossible to tell a story in a Momoporgr. Every single player must be the hero, and if every single player must be the hero, you can't get a rolling story going. You just can't.

Everybody will be getting the same quests, everybody will be fetching the old lady's shoe, everybody will be getting the credits from the abusive slum lord... sure, some will use force choke, others mind trick, and maybe a few will give the credits out of their own poket, but still. They'll be doing the same thing forever.

I honestly don't think you can tell a story in a MMORPG. It's not how it works.

“[After being hired] there [are] over three months after the multiple tests [you take] that you spend before you ever get to touch the game, just training to be a BioWare writer. And if you’re writing a class, which is the most sort of sacred thing to be doing, you get stuff written all over your stuff constantly that says…you pitch a plot to me, and you’re writing [a] Sith [quest] and I write on the board ‘And then Darth Vader…helps a farmer…to save his tractor.’ And then I point at it and then we mock you and then that doesn’t go in our game.”

– “Star Wars: The Old Republic” lead writer Daniel Erickson on how he wants to avoid the mundane quests players normally find themselves involved in with today’s MMOs; if it isn’t epic or heroic, he doesn’t want it.

This is going to fail hard.

Why couldn't they just keep it singleplayer? :(

This.
It's disappointing, but grow up guys.

Bioware coulda done one while Obsidian did the other /shrug

Pity they didn't go that route.

They should have eaten all the people from troika and made a sequel to bloodlines.

Everyones missing the most important part and thats the screenshots they've released:

ss_20081021_forcechoke_full.jpg

Look at the size of that ****ing lightsaber

naw the lightsabres are normal size, the characters are a new race: gnomes

I'm not really concerned about pre-alpha screenshots tbh.

May the force live for a long time prosperously with you!

Oh yea, hawt, oh man you choke that jedi...yea...she's been a bad jedi...ohhhh....

I don't think WoW players are generally that interested in story, given the horrible retcons and corny plots they happily swallow whole.

Also a little thing called:

[x] Skip quest text

Ah, wait a sec. The article's title is misleading. They're hoping to emulate WoW's success by bringing in more to the MMO playerbase rather than trying to steal them.

That makes more sense.

Are there really that many people waiting in the folds for a story-based MMO?

Let alone a Star Wars one...

Tabula Rasa promised a great storyline, and Richard Garriott is an awesome game designer/storyteller. But it failed.

EDIT: lol at this

We'll have to wait and see.

Will the Win of Bioware balance out the Fail of recent Star Wars (thanks George)?
