does anyone know how boundaries will be set up?
to keep you from leaving the place you are supposed to be

I suspect they will be set up the same way they were in HL1, you never really feel like you are very limited because the boundaries are so intelligently placed and hidden.

Buildings, rubble, collapsed roads and sewers, etc.

There will be boundries (obviously) yet I thikn they will be realistic boundries, something you would find in real life, like a fence, or a wall.
Hope that helps :)

k thx cuz i just bought half life and im still on the indoor levels

thats better than never having played hl, which some people here are guilty of. and those that do have it, loads here have never even FINISHED it. even tho its really easy.

The combine have road blocks, there were some example pics of that in pc gamer (uk). Barriers will have to be far more inteligent once you have some firepower though :)

In the tenaments video you can see some of the boundaries.

Yep, there are sofas and things blocking off corridoors on the upermost level

Didn't valve say they put icthyosaurs (sp?) in the ocean to prevent the player from swimming too far off?

Wreckage, debris, fences, walls, narrow cliffs, etc...

Or they could have the infamous 'invisible wall' ...

Those days are over my friend. Especially with Valve. :)

This has been discussed. We have come to an agreement that Valve has plenty of creative ideas to prevent you from going into areas that you are not supposed to.

Keep in mind, HL2 will not be as linear as the first one, and such boundaries will not be needed as much as you think.

if always hated that.....especily in racing games id dooo an awesome jump that got me of the traks limits and i wouldent be alble to esplore the world in my ferarie....Stupid Lazy develipers

Half-Life didn't have any invisible walls that I'm aware of. I think It's safe to say that Valve won't go back on this.

There were many in the part with the dam in surface tension.

I assume all "forced barriers" (i.e. boundaries that seem out of place but had to be placed) would be combine barriers like someone above said. After all, the combine doesn't want people escape anyway right?

BTW what happens when you try to swim to the boundaries? I know in World of Warcraft they would pull this "you died of fatigue" crap at the last second.

Has anyone mentioned those HUGE combine walls that crush buildings?

Id say if anything, those are boundries.

what about the airboat... on the coast.... surely the sea will have invisible walls.

i for one will definatley be swimming out to sea as far as i possibly can if the airboat is not supplied on the coast.

I was thinking the same thing.. This is the most obvious of VALVe's tools to create believable borders. What else are those walls there for, but to make Gordon's world smaller? (and somewhat dynamically, no less)

Still, its going to be interesting to see what they do in the more 'vast' environments.

The first time I play through, I wont be testing this stuff. I'm going to play the role of Gordon for the full effect.. second time or third time through tho, I may test the boundries of the world, physics, etc, essentially dissecting the fun out of the game.

To make up for it I'll bink friendlies in the head with the crowbar.
(that should keep it entertaining)

Yup. I read that in some interview with Gabe.

that "HUGE combine wall that crushes buildings" is the citadel, and i believe it's a single structure, it's slowly eating it's way through the region.

It's possible that once you get far enough out the boat could sink and the ichyosaurs would eat you. Though even then you could turn on god mode. So yeah, there will have to be invisible walls in the ocean, hopefully we'll have to cheat to find them though.

Stuff like buildings, wreckage, combine barriers etc. I guess.
Yeah, but what about in the huge aereas of the dried-up seabed? I guess eventually you'll come up against sea again?

I think they are many towers surrounding the city. Very effective to keep gamers uhh I mean prisoners uuhh I mean "Citizens" from where they shouldn't be.

I know what is going to happen. You will get in your airboat, go as far as you can, then you will come to a wall. This wall appears to be painted like sky.....You move your airboat along a bit and you notice that there is a set of stairs and a door. You climb the stairs and go out the door and you end up in the real world :O

In case I don't see ya; Good afternoon good evening and good gib!

There were, if you swam down under the damn and through the propeller parts.

I generally find any sort of blockage to stop you going in some direction as being contrived, silly and stupid. Can't really avoid it though, oh well.

Thief 3 was particularly bad with this - the city is really huge, at the start of the game, but by the end of the game you've been everywhere there is to go in the city and there are no extra parts at all (everything just ends in a dead-end). Killed the realism a lot.

That sounds to dumb. I dont think they did that. I like what FarCry did tho. If you swim to far a chopper comes and distorys you.

Umm....isn't that pretty much the same thing?

Roar, I couldn't stand Spider Man 2 for the PC (yes, I bought. Yes, I threw it on the ground and slid on it.). They had invisble walls GALORE! Bah, they had an invisible ceiling...
