They pick people for their voice. You don't hear many Geordie or Scouser anchors on the national news because people think they sound stupid (also southerners can't understand what they're saying). I swear southerners think we live in shacks up here in the north.

The southerners sound smart, the further north you get, the IQ of the voice seems to drop if you get what I mean.

After talking to Davo, ComradeBadger, and Pobz for quite some time, I can say that all brits have a wierd fetish, huge eyebrows, and are uber assholes.

Although the way they pronounce bird is funny.

I'm not really english cause I live in Canada :E.

I wanna be as smart as the southerners! Lets start a course at a Univerity called Y'all 101 and then the advanced course Y'all 102. ;)
 
Obviously just because you sound smarter doesn't mean you are smarter. I've met plenty of southerners who have eloquent accents but are complete asses. If you want a famous example of stupid people with posh accents look no further than our very own Royal Family.

I'm a southerner, not a very posh one but a southerner nontheless, but i go uni up north...i find my accent attracts girls, they think its cute. Dunno about sounding smart tho...

our news is boring compared to americas news.

im flicking and i see flat toned british presenters....then to FOX news and theyre going nuts over something like a cat stuck in a tree sorta thing.

i wish we had ott enthusiastic news presenters like the mericans:(

its funny, in america the south is where people are stereotyped as being dumb and their accents being "unrefined." im not saying i believe this to be true, but even if you watch network tv you never really hear a southern accent, unless its being made fun of (with exceptions of course).

I think the accent has a lot to do with sounding intelligent, but you also seem to use certain words which sound, I don't know, official somehow. I have spoken to a few people from England (Badger, Farrow, Crush...kind of) over Skype and the accent combined with the word choice, structure and phrasing made them sound much more intelligent than the average American teen (myself included, I sound pretty dumb sometimes). That held true for a friend from Wales as well (accent was just damn sexy tbh). Honestly, Brits seem to have a talent for speaking coherently and properly (not in a stuffy way) that isn’t so prevalent in the US.

There is a HUGE difference between dialects in the UK, but most American TV shows portray the British as speaking the Queens English... Not true!

theres loads of different accents in the UK.. theres:

Geordie
Welsh
Scouser
Macunion
Cockney
Posh english
Southern English
Yorkshite accent


and many many more.:eek:
 
Posh or nice accents aren't true for all southerners. The on-the-spot interviews they had with people outside Stratford station (probably phone-jackers and train ticket touts) when London got the Olympics were painful to behold.

I hate my own voice. It is a bastard cross between wannabe pakistani gangsters, random ebonics, and demented cockney, with a smattering of geekiness. Every time I hear my voice played back I want to blowtorch my tongue.

yeah your right not all southern england accents are 'normal'.

look at the cornish accent... thats the 'aye aye captain, fisher man' accent.

i think it used 2 be in the captain birdseye adverts for fishfingers:sniper:
 
It's not just the BBC that gave me that Idea. When I was in College, whe had substitue teacher from an airline company to teach us about autopilot. He was British and every time he talked, you swore that he must be right..just because of his accent. God I wish I had an accent like that. I could talk about a piece of dirt on the ground and people would probably be impressed.
 
News anchors with strong cockny accents aren't heard that much either.
