My favorite stupid criminal story is still the guy who put a $20 bill down on the counter to pay for stuff at a gas station. The owner opened the register and the guy grabbed the cash tray and ran. There was only like $16 in the drawer and he forgot to take his $20 off the counter when he ran.

Ha, these guys were on TV just two days ago talking about how they found it when digging a hole in their backyard to plant a tree. The story sounded quite credible then actually.
