Call of Juarez screens

Actually, depth of field is supposed to simulate the effect of a camera lens. Real human optical depth of field looks a bit different. It gets blurry, but also like double vision. Plus, we can change our focal length and cameras cannot, like this game.
 
With us blinded by HDR overbloom, how are we supposed to see that half our screen is permanently out of focus due to DOF?
 
I have been thinking about realism in games for a couple of years now and depth of field has always come up. Unfortunately it is not so much the technical side that hurts the technology as the control method.

My idea has always been for character eye movement to be mapped to an analogue stick (the best thing we have at the moment). However both sticks are already used, so that idea is not so good.

I can't see how a perfect implimentation would work, unless somehow the game could adjust the DoF according to where you (as in the real you) were looking.

Another reason why I have looked into DoF is it's possible performance enhancements. Object in the "blurry zone" of the screen could be rendered with lower poly counts or with lower resolution textures and without as many shader effects.
