nope ..read his book ..if not for that fact that certain members didnt want to get involved they might have made a real difference

I just cant believe that youre in dispute over a small island .....that looks like a floating cow-pat.

Wait, is that OIL I see under there?

For some reason I have a vision in my head of two young, slightly retarded girls with funny accents slapping each other.....  :naughty:

What a coincedence,I have that image all the time.
Only , in my vision theyre not retarded, but topless.

Well, Denmark owned you for a while. The English flag, the danish flag. And we were first, not you. You were our slaves!!!! Haha!! I don't know the danish national anthem , so here's the swedish:

maybe you should learn spanish

They should learn English. I'm learning German, will be more useful in the AF as I doubt I'll be in AZ forever, and will improve chances of getting stationed somewhere like Ramstein aside from deployments and such.

but why would they be asking you in spanish? could it be that the area is predominately spanish? why else would they serve people in spanish?

The area is predominately English, check census info too.
Language other than English spoken at home, pct age 5+, 2000 25.9%

He thought I spoke Spanish, even if I did, you speak English here in a business setting.

I wouldn't expect you to go to McDonalds and have the person speak Hindu to you.

if I spoke hindi I might ..he took you for spanish ..no big deal

Slaves? I don't remember that. I always remember Sweden as being some cold little insignificant country that nobody cares about. Except Swedish people of course.

I grew up in an italian neighbourhood ..people talked to me in italian all the time ...there's a lot of chinese people in my area ..sometimes you cant make out what they're saying cuz their english isnt so good ...but I'm sure if I moved to China I'd have no problem picking up the language, customs culture in no time flat. There's this family who owns the store down the road from me who is from iran I think ...the wife speaks with a broken accent, smiles too much and sometimes remarks that my son looks like me ...my dad speaks with an accent ...so does the woman who serves me coffee every morning ..the guy who does our printing has a pretty thick accent but they can deliver when it's a rush job ..so does high-faluting specialist doctor who comes in once a week to see how his line of medical instruments are going ..speaking of doctors, the proctologist who gave me an exam was south african ..I think his secretary was greek

Yeah but it creates a bad division, and then it ends up weighing on state services too.

Every immigrant who comes here should be required within five years to learn English or leave the country.
Theodore Roosevelt, one of the greatest US Presidents of all time.

There can be no fifty-fifty Americanism in this country. There is room here for only 100 percent. Americanism, only for those who are Americans and nothing else.
Theodore Roosevelt

a bad division for whom? the whites or the hispanics ...the hispanics seem to do quite fine within their communities ...this sort of mentality of "immigrants are weighing down this country" is nothing new ...but it usually leads to unpleasant things

Those who accept America as their nation and those who refuse to come to the culture after immigrating, from any place, not only hispanic nations. It's nothing to do with immigrants weighing down the nation, they can make great contributions and we are a society founded upon immigrants. When you immigrate though, you're not just 'coming to' American, you need to become an American. Has nothing to do with race or past nationality, you now are no longer a member of whatever group it was before, you're American! Like TR said, no fifty fifty Americanism "Cuban-American, Mexican-American, Russian-American, etc etc" No such thing, and those who come here should become a part of America as a whole.

The man who loves other countries as much as his own stands on a level with the man who loves other women as much as he loves his own wife.
Theodore Roosevelt

so they should give up their own and fully embrace american culture?
what about dual nationalities?

Dual nationality should be banned. As far as I knew when you took the oath of allegiance you broke off any allegiances with other nations before though (I could be wrong but that's as far as I heard from immigrants)

no, you can retain dual citizenship

"For example, a child born in a foreign country to U.S. citizen parents may be both a U.S. citizen and a citizen of the country of birth. Also, a U.S. citizen may acquire foreign citizenship by marriage, or a person naturalized as a U.S. citizen may not lose the citizenship of the country of birth. U.S. law does not mention dual nationality or require a person to choose one citizenship or another. A person who is automatically granted another citizenship does not risk losing U.S. citizenship.

However, a person who acquires a foreign citizenship by applying for it may lose U.S. citizenship. In order to lose U.S. citizenship, the law requires that the person must apply for the foreign citizenship voluntarily, by free choice, and with the intention to give up U.S. citizenship. Intent can be shown by the person's statements or conduct.

The U.S. Government recognizes that dual nationality exists but does not encourage it as a matter of policy because of the problems it may cause. "

That's wrong. (Not on a factual/law basis but on a 'what's right' basis)

It should be required to renounce all other citizenship and allegiance when becoming a citizen. You're either American or you're not, simple as that. If you don't want to become an American, then leave, make some room for those who DO want to become one.

I see it's already lost by applying for it in other places though, that's good. Shouldn't be lost just because some other place said you are a citizen of them. If Malaysia just suddenly said I was a citizen I shouldn't lose US Citizenship because they did that, but I should renounce theirs. All we need is for there to necessary to renounce all other citizenships when becoming an American citizen.

Wait you DO renounce all other citizenship in the oath of allegiance!

"I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state or sovereignty, of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform noncombatant service in the armed forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God."

So dual citizenship is null, you can only get it by automatic means, immigrants would renounce their previous citizenship and those applying for other nations would lose US citizenship, so only a tiny minority through strange means could be dual citizens anyway.

We invaded Scotland, Ireland and England! The slave part was a joke, of course, but you were occupied by Vikings for hundreds of years. Many of your words come from scandinavian tongues. "Window" for example, comes from the norwegian "vindue", hole in the wall... I think, I'm not sure.

Yeah, but they all left Scandinavia for a reason ;) Too cold and dingy to do anything worthwhile!

And stripping Africans of their last possessions, is worthwhile, yes? :p Although we were not so innocent on the empire-front, We had a colony in Delaware in the 17th century called "New Sweden".

Back on topic; I heard that the Danish are actually sending a ship to the island. I though their entire military capacity was stuck in Iraq (a submarine and 20 men)...

heheh:

"Canada may be pulling back from overseas military commitments, but is planning to "flex its muscles" with an exercise on home soil by sending a warship, a squadron of helicopters and 200 troops to the high Arctic this summer.

The military says the three-week long exercise has nothing to do with a brewing territorial dispute with Denmark over the ownership of a tiny island between Ellesesmere Island and Greenland"

Canada has launched a five-year plan to increase its military presence throughout the Arctic, including satellite surveillance and far-reaching patrols of soldiers on snowmobiles."

this is getting rediculous

Wait a minute, that's the entire Canadian military! If they're going to the Arctic who's defending Canada!? Oh noes!

One country that disallows dual nationality is China. So if America followed the same path they'd be adhering to a similar philosphy of nationalism.

fool! that's not the extent of the entire canadian military! ..the other 2 soldiers are in afghanistan

not to worry ...we know how to deal with the greenlandians ............................................... :|

Well, we'll see about that! Remember, we discovered you, not the other way around. Technically, Newfoundland belongs to Norway.
