Never heard the term Chav before,. but I'm familar enough with the type here in America. Hip hop stylin white trash, basicallly. Dont think they're quite so rebellious around here tho. I think the fact that they can have guns keeps their egos from getting so small that they need to start shit all the time. (scary, 'eh?)

Chavs remind me of some characters in the Canadian show "Trailer Park Boys"

Anybody know where the term "Chav" derives from?

Probably from the fact they remind you of something that isn't very nice, and something that they want to get rid of Immediately. Derived from the English "Chafing" ;)

Well I heard it [Charver] is Geordie (North-East England) slang originally meaning "Young Lad"
But it has since changed.

I first heard the word about 7 or 8 years ago when I was in high school.

I heard Jimmy Nail calling someone it in a 1980s episode of Auf Weidersehen Pet, so it must be true :p

Actually, is this a case of America changing the meanings of words again?

Colleges in the UK are colleges, not universities. Colleges are like extended high schools, unless they're art colleges. Generally people go to college if they don't have the grades for Uni, or are doing an art course. At least that's what it's like in Scotland. Around where I am, Uni's are more for maths and sciences.

You still need grades to get into college in the UK, thick people like Chav's must get in on some government program wasting everyone's money on letting them fool about for a few more years before they waste everyone's money by going on the pancrack.

I'm pretty sure Scotland is the same, Uni's certainly don't just let anyone in (even though looking at some students you'd wonder on that one) And colleges you certainly need atleast a few above a certain grade.

Most Chav's can be found on Nacro schemes btw *shudders* which I suppose they would consider college.

In my opinion Chav is an abbreviation of Charver, made popular by the Sun news paper in a resent article, which is a northern term 4 the southern meaning of towine or pikey. 4 the Americans (or those who live in a cave) out there who don't know what a 'chav' is, its the scum from under ur shoe that usually wears burberry, adidas/kapper and other sports brands when not playing sport, has a very large chip on they're sholuder because they weren't born in2 money and they think they should have been, a temper problem, a problem with the rest of society, and those who ask if u called they're mum a slut when ur weren't even talking just coz they want a fight. Most aren't hiphop lovers (and there4 aren't wiggers or homeboyz) coz they hate skaters (who as a generalization do like hiphop), they also hate goths coz they look 'funny'. They hang around in large groups (so they don't get beaten up them-selves 4 being c**ts) and shout random offensive coments and start fights 4 fun, a few days ago some obese burberry/adidas wearing c**t shouted w**kers at me and stomry as we were walking through the park coz he tought it was funny and it made him look big infront of his pikey mates. Chavs do enrol in college but get kicked out coz they think they look hard if they don't go 2 there lectures, and there4 can't go 2 uni coz they haven't finished college. B4 any1 asks i do have a problem with them coz they have jumped and beaten me up in large groups more than once coz i don't wear the same clothes or have a hatred 4 people looking different (i myself look normall {in comparison with the rest of England} and i don't wear strange clothes). All of the above is my opinion and should not be taken as true fact but its close enough. They would knick ur granny if they think they could sell her.

PS I was the one of the 'artist' Lewis the other being Stormy (Martyn) in the wonderful pice of artwork that stared this thread, I never dreamed it would go this far but i'm quite glad/amused it has.

See my last quote for what a chav is. That program was unbelieveable. Presented by a complete tard as well.

I emailed sky as well telling them it was bollocks and they should do it properly.
 
yeah, it kinda sucked. It's odd, the advertisement for it was spot on, but the program itself was way off. Oh well, best leave documentaries to the discovery channel.
