A man accused of sexually assaulting nine boys with physical or mental disabilities told a judge that having sex with children is a sacred ritual protected by civil rights laws.

Phillip Distasio, who said he is the leader of a church called Arcadian Fields Ministries, represented himself at his pretrial hearing Wednesday. He is charged with 74 counts including rape, pandering obscenity to minors and corrupting another with drugs.

"I'm a pedophile. I've been a pedophile for 20 years," he said in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Wednesday. "The only reason I'm charged with rape is that no one believes a child can consent to sex. The role of my ministry is to get these cases out of the courtrooms.

Things like not requiring priests to divulge what they are told at confession, or how churches don't pay tax, "faith-based initiatives" for prayer groups, and etc.

I don't think priests should be forced to tell what is confessed to them. Firstly, because if they were, criminals wouldn't confess anyway, and secondly, you would rob "innocent" people of a religious crutch that many rely on. Say you got drunk and had an affair, and are now very sorry. People should be able to get stuff like that off thier chests without bringing down their relationships.

Having an affair is not a crime, while the other blatantly is so.

Free non-professional socialist psych treatment (which is what confession is, inherently) is not worth harbouring murderers and child-killers over.

You missed my point. If the law could force confessions/phycotherepy sessions to be revealed, then commiters of major crimes would not admit them. So the only effect would be to rob people of the ability of confessing non criminal activities they never the less feel guilty about.

well, people generally confess to priests because its easier and closer than going to a psychiatrist. Usually a priest confessional just serves the purpose of making the people more loyal to the church. They will hear your problems and then tell you something like, "Go do five hail marys and donate some money to the church" and then the person confessing will feel better because they feel that their sin is "paid for"

so the church wins because they get a more loyal following, because the people feel like the church actually cares about them, and the "sinner" feels better because he/she now has a moral justification by sanction of religion.

Using a psychiatrist might be better in fixing the problems, but people still like confessionals because it makes them feel better.

A doctor might be better at treating cancer, but Ear Candling (the process of lighting a candle in your ear as a method of "purifying" it) makes people feel better too.

Typically, getting your ear candled costs $55 and risks burning your eardrums off with hot wax. Scientifically, it is a proven fraud that does nothing.

What people believe and what is good for them are entirely different things. The placebo effect only reaches so far.

Like ear candling, confession is a cost without a benefit.

Whatever benefit does exist is far outweighed by the negative.
Now, if people want confession as a free quack therapy, they will have to get it in a way that doesn't directly hamper the justice system - or not get it at all.

It puts people's mental health at risk anyways. If people are using confession as an alternative to medical help, then whatever problem they have is not going to get better.
It tricks people into avoiding treatment that could save them.
