But you're right that, if that was the case, they could have announced it sooner. But that they haven't suggests things aren't so bad.
If it came out on the 5 year anniversary of HL (Nov?), then that'd actually be quite nice Very regular.

Personally I think they like keeping us in the dark, running around like headless chickens.

It all boils down to this. It'll either be released, or it won't. I would hope no one's life will end if it doesn't. Personally, I'm waiting for an announcement that goes something like "While we fully anticipated that we would be able to get Half-Life 2 out and on store shelves by September 30th, we ran into an unforeseen event and are forced to delay the game until such and such date."
