I was recently watching the video clip that features the "Dune Buggy", and noticed something I hadn't before. When Gordon drives up the ramp/collapsed dock, the buildings read "Northern Petrol". On the righthand building it includes a simple "NP" logo (some have mistaken it for "Nintendo Power", but come on!). The lefthand building has a large rooftop sign reading "Northern Petrol".

This points out a simple fact that isn't in line with the idea that it's in Eastern Europe: They speak English (this is supported by the "Hotel Metropolis" in the Strider clip and the unaccented dialogue of the rebels).

Also, a quick search on Google supplied me with Northern Petroleum Plc which is based out of London. But, granted they have interests all over Europe.

So there you go. Can City-17 be in England?

Intresting you could have found a loop hole in the information released so far.

Wow, thats really interesting, this is one of the first new theories wich have almost solid proof.

It certainly is, excepting the likely possibility that they just needed a name for a petrol corp and decided on the rather generic 'Northern Petrol'.

There's the "Terminal Hotel", I think it is, in one of the screenshots. Is that anything?

Well they might have taken inspiration from many cities around the world. The fact that there is a city in russia that was called City-17 once does not mean that the City-17 thats in the game is in eastern russia. According to the evidence we have atm, it seems that City-17 is a mixture of English and japanese companies and russian architechture and stuff.

Indeed Fanric :)

Gabe mentioned several times that city17 is located in an eastern european country and it looks like that :P

Um you know Northern Petrol have a branch in Italy, as well as... Spain is it?

Witch is exactly what it is. Valve has repeatedly said that city17 is a mixture of European cities and villages. It would be completely useless to suspect otherwise, witch makes this thread... well pretty useless.

not exactly...it could be the easter egg.. :o gabe replied saying they used satelite imagery to produce the life like town and replicate this loactaion!! I KNEW IT

not really :afro: lol

That’s an interesting concept. This not only links in with Northern Petrol but the fact that the game contains an icebreaker ship. However, I do not believe its anywhere in the UK.

The first fact is that Gabe mentioned to PCZONE that the location of city17 is in Northern Central Europe, however other publishers have claimed its in Eastern Europe. I personally think it’s the first one.

I reckon its either Norway or Denmark, because they also have direct contact with the North Sea Oil platforms, and also direct shipping with the UK. You wouldn't believe how well they are able to speak English

I’ve also noticed that many people believe that the sea has been drained dry. However, living quite close to the sea myself, I can honestly say that this could be a geographical situation where the beach is so flat that the sea could be 2 miles away at low tide from where it would be at high tide.

everytime the tide comes im everyone gets flooded :S

I remember it was often like that at the beaches in Northhumberland(sp?) was very weird, you could walk for ages before even seeing the sea. As a kid it was great fun :)

But even dangerous, if those of you who hear stories from the UK about being stranded in these area or being cut off because of the speed the tide seems to come in

Imagine playing on the alien-infested beaches of City-17 as a child... scarred for life because the strider stepped on your sandcastle.

I still imagine that the striders will be in these area, because they were originally going to be used in the sea or something, but then Valve decided to use them in the Urban areas
