The game would like be... one level. That, or just lots and lots of missions that are exactly the same, which I suppose is the usual COD gameplay mechanic, COD4 just took it a few steps forward and made it more exciting/cinematic.
I had no problems with COD3, either. I found the MP leagues ahead of COD1 and 2 because of the classes and more detailed/bigger maps. It was Battlefield 2 lite, sort've, but nevertheless real good fun.
Well, there was more to world war I than just the trench warfare of the late western front. There was a period of German advance which played out similar to World War II as the Germans descended upon France, and then were stopped by the trenches, there was the dogfighting between aces and such, firebombing by zepplins in the cities, and the eastern front, in which Russians with very old, almost Napoleonic weaponry, were crushed by the German forces. There was also an extensive use of tanks near the end of the war, and submarine warfare in the North Sea and the Atlantic.
I think there'd be plenty of variety in World War I to do a FPS game with.
