I imagine a lot of you guys have heard about this thing with Joe Satriani accusing Coldplay of having copied Viva La Vida from one of his songs the name of which I can't remember.(If you havent I'm sorry for the lack of link but I've got no idea how to post one)

I say the songs sound almost nothing like each other, exept for a few minor similarities in the layout of the music- Joe Satriani is a liar.

anyway I wanna see what you think, please vote on the pole the poll and comment on how similar you think the two songs are.

Coldplay themselves say that it's a coincidence, which probably is the case

Viva La Vida wasn't as good as their last 3 imo.

it's pretty blatant imho but it could've been unintentional

they ripped kraftwerk though so it seems like their cup of tea

loads of people say coldplay sucks. I don't get it? they're Amazing???!!???!!?

it's all the rage to dismiss them because they're mainstream and chicks dig them.. personally they're one of the best rock bands i've ever heard

Possibly the worst way to compare the two songs but I can certainly tell the similarities but I still stick with the idea that it's purely coincidental.

No- It's a mistake, a coinceidence and a misunderstanding!

Coldplay are simply the best.

who voted coldplay ripped the song off???!!!!????!!!!!!!?????I WILL BURN YOUR LEGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After watching the video its easy to see that it was probably copied.

heretic!!!!!! kill, burn, destroy!!!!!

Sorry, that was too big, I won't post that size again because it is stupid.

What? It's uncanny how much the two sound alike.

Don't let your bias of who you prefer cloud you - I ****ing hate Satch and don't mind Coldplay, but I can see exactly where he is coming from.

Wow, stuff just broke.

Anyway, what i was going to say was that the video that Psy posted was terrible.

It seems so pointless now.

I can't say i like Coldplay, but i'm not sure whether i like Satriani either, albeit i do thoroughly enjoy instrumental guitar tunes.

Can't confirm it, but I heard elsewhere that they had permission for that, the frontman is a big Kraftwerk fan apparently.

Anyway, it does seem pretty sketchy, a little too blatant to just be a coincidence maybe, but in any case it's such a basic melody I don't think it should be subject to a lawsuit. At worst, it's not like they intentionally tried to copy the song, they just emulated one part of it (to great success, but still). It's not like they outright covered over group's songs without crediting them like certain other groups...

Although, does anyone remember they've already been accused of this once by another group - for the same song? That one was a little less obvious though:

How can you say it's blatant? There are almost no similarities in the songs whatsoever? if there are any please point them out.

and to you theantipop- I am not being biased, if I thought the two sounded remotely similar I would say! It's uncanny that someone can say it's uncanny how much they sound alike?

face it, they sound completely different- the similarity in the chords is a mistake and coinceidance.

Anyone who's studied music knows that this is intentional plagerism.

heretic!!!!!! kill, burn, destroy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Relax, blacky.

How about watching either of the two videos posted (not my ones, earlier on)?

You sure bout dat?

Hmm.

Well, if you say so. If you'd watched the second video you'd know it isn't just the chord structure that's similar, but honestly I don't see how anyone with an ear for music couldn't even acknowledge that they sound somewhat alike (but then you are Coldplay fan OH BURN just kidding though they aren't bad).

Anyway, didn't you say you wanted to hear what people thought? Seems like you're more interested in trolling anyone with a differing opinion to yours.

!?

In Talk, Coldplay said they took that melody from Kraftwerk, and they've always credited them, said it was from KW's work and they've been inspired by their work. It's hardly ripped as if stolen, did you buy X&Y?

I watched the technical video comparison and although they are remarkably similar Coldplay don't need to go stealing minor artists work when they are extremely talented anyway. The Scientist, Yellow, Trouble, Spies, Speed of Sound, Fix You....all songs which have no controversy around them, pure Coldplay and put them where they are. Sure Viva la Vida has vast similarities to Joe's song, but nothing past co-incidence.

I had no idea who Joe Satriani was before this, but now I do. So I guess he's done what he set out to do...sigh.

Joe Satch is a very famous guitar player, or at least as big as they get in guitar virtuosity. He didn't need to do this to get attention, as tackling a band who are in the market as big as Coldplay right now just for attention would be pretty bad.

The man just see's a lot of similarities in their song from his. I have to agree with him - it's damn uncanny how note for note perfect the two are. I'd like to see Coldplay's response to this.

Again; I loathe guitar virtuosity music, Joe esp, and I'm not a huge fan of Coldplay either. I think that this is just one of those cases where a song or extract isn't just similar, it's pretty much exactly the same, key and note n' all. I think the key is, anyway.

This is weird! I've just been listening to Viva La Vida! I've got no idea who Joe Satriani is anyway so I say no.

Chrono Trigger fans around the world will no longer have to wonder if there's a link between Rick Astley's hit song and Robo's theme.

When you combine Robo's theme with Never Gonna Give You Up, the shocking result is this.

It's pretty amazing how similar they sound and fit together, and this has lead to speculation over the years if perhaps composer Yasunori Mitsuda was influenced by Mr. Astley's work at the time or if he just flat out copied it. Mitsuda was shown the "Rick Roll" video in a recent interview and had this to say:

"It certainly is the first time I?ve seen this. I?m surprised! That?s the first time I?ve heard of Rick Astley, and it?s interesting that such a phenomenon is happening in a different country. Thank you for your time!"
