I was looking at the official Half-Life 2 site today and noticed this:

The player again picks up the crowbar of research scientist Gordon Freeman, who finds himself on an alien-infested Earth being picked to the bone, its resources depleted, its
populace dwindling

Then I found these two screenshots of the Citadel.

(don't know if they qualify as spoilers anyways, just images of the citadel)

So, it accured to me that the Citadel resembles giant mining facility / machine thing, depleting Earths resources?Could this be true, do you think?

Yepp! I would say that you hit the spot!

EDIT:I would not call those screenshots spoilers!

I guess the combine are called combine because they are men and they have allied with the Xen aliens.
/edit
or is this a bit off topic ;P

Yeh it sounds ok, on the second screenshot you can see it resembles a sort of screw on the inside. One thing that does strike me as od is in some of the binks, you see the Citadels strange "gates" move outward and grasp more of the city.

No, the resistance is allied with the Xen aliens.

resistance is only allied with the... damn, what do you call them again... The ones that blew you with their green 'force thingy'

The soldiers are allied with the Xen aliens, at least the PC gameplay magazine said so...

The Vortigaunts, yes. And the combine is allied to the other Xenies, (but that's quite new).

If this were true, how comes the combine soldiers attack the ant lions in the coast video? and vise versa in the bug bait if they are co-sided. They simple are not allied. If anything its the resistance more allied with Xen now.

I believe that the combine are allied with Race-X. Xen aliens were purely animals on territory under the control of an unknown force (probably also Race-X) and the Vortiguants are probably from a completely different world which was taken over.

I still stand by my theory that the Combine is a force of assimilation.

I'm pretty sure there are multiple citadels all over the planet during HL2. I think I heared something about that, but it might just be second hand rumour.

I wonder if the "Resources" they're talking about are just people and not so much things like oil and whatnot........or it could just be both.

Yes, I've heard that there are Citadels in each city that slowly expand to take over whatever town they are in.

Ooh, I have it! The Combine are called the Combine because they are harvesting the earth's resources. The citadel acts as a drill of sorts, and the Combine are the harvesters. That would explain their name, as a combine is (as everyone knows) a farming harvester. It makes sense, it really does!

hahah are u allied with sum aliens apart from the vortuqients
O GOD PLEASE LET DIS BE TRU ILL DRAG RACE THE G-MAN ON ICHTYSOURS :) :D thats a good plot for hl2 or perhaps an add on

HL2 - exspantion - The Slimmy And The ichtysours furiousness

crap, i printed the pics... thats not good
anyhow, they cant really be called spoilers because we've already seen pics like that. those pics just give us a more in depth look at the dudes. and it is a good theory, if i may say so.

EDIT: resources could be lava. you know, create a plasmatic weapon of mass destruction? ever think of that?

I will also stand by that theory.
same here, the year waiting, and consumed all info from articles I come to the same conclusion, assimilation and slavery

Theres two classes of XEN aliens and they are at war with each other I think if i remember right it was class 1 (Combines soldiers and Combines...) Class 2 (Hydra and those bugs that fly and burrow...)

My feeling is that the Combine are a Hive Mind type group, the singular mind has put forth the face of Dr.Breen to make the humans feel safe like they are under the rule of a true human rather than these soldier "Things". The Combine soldiers could be a result of Xen Human DNA projects a COMBINation of the two species into one, The Combine can't reveal themselves in true form yet so the place the odd gasmasks on and create the later combine to be cold, heartless, soldier drones.

com·bine Pronunciation Key (km-bn)
v. com·bined, com·bin·ing, com·bines
v. tr.

1. To bring into a state of unity; merge.
2. To join (two or more substances) to make a single substance, such as a chemical compound; mix.
3. To possess or exhibit in combination: The choreography, which combines artistry and athletics, is extremely innovative.
4. (kmbn) To harvest (a grain crop) using a cutting, threshing, and cleaning machine.

well...from what we know, the combine are harvesting earth's resources by cutting it apart with those gate-thingies.

therefore, the combine may not be combining anything in the sense of the first, second, or third definitions.

It looks like a screw / drill, so I wouldn't doubt it. Good find mate.

I see what you meant now, thats pretty freaky. btw is the strider video available in fullscreen, my bink is tiny i got it from here : http://www.nilhanth.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/videos.htm

NB.... Goto the main page (www.halflife2.net) and goto media. Then goto videos... Download... Watch...

Anyway, After watching one of the e3 2004 videos, I relized that when Father Grigory is talking to you in the graveyard, he says that he is going to take you to the mine... I am guessing this supports the this theory, or I could be totally wrong.

I think something that supports the assimilation theory are the Combine soldiers wearing rather curious apparel. Specifically, I'm talking about the soldiers that may have had their Combine accessories grafted on to them. Take a close look at the thigh pads and armor on the soldiers in these pictures:

http://www.worthplaying.com/press/155/hl2_image09c.jpg

http://www.worthplaying.com/press/155/hl2_image05c.jpg

I almost want to say those dark stains on the jeans of those soldiers is blood, but it might not be the right tone. Also note the disturbing similarities between the clothes these guys are wearing under the armor and what the resistance people are wearing:

http://www.worthplaying.com/press/155/hl2_image13c.jpg

Now it could just be coincidence and the Combine simply favor denim or something, but it seems odd when compared with these other Combine soldiers who appear to don "normal" uniforms:

http://www.worthplaying.com/press/155/hl2_image02c.jpg
http://www.worthplaying.com/press/155/hl2_image01c.jpg

For some reason the guys above seem more "pristine," their uniforms lacking the grittier feeling of their other buddies. Either way, it almost seems as though the armor was forced upon some of these soldiers, perhaps against the person's will.

As a final bit, if the Combine are consuming Earth's resources, and one of those resources are the planet's oceans, this would have catastrophic effects on the hydrosphere and atmosphere. If significant portions of the oceans started to disappear for good the weather system would be disrupted on a global scale, possibly speeding up the process of turning the planet into something else. Not to mention forcing humanity to live in increasingly artificial environments.

if the citidel(sp) was the thing sucking up all the resourses it would be kool if you got 'behind' its path to see maybe a huge ass canyon where it has been drilling
