Combine Empire....greatest enemy ever?

I've been thinking, I can't think of any enemy in anything (films, books, games, TV shows) that has a greater background and is stronger than the combine empire. The majority love having them as an enemy in HL and we havnt even seen the full brute force of the Combine Homeworld yet. If you agree please say, if you disagree please say and quote on which enemy you think is better and why. Have fun

Anyway, is this poll based on our opinion? Because I like the SW Empire the best. But if we're talking who could actually beat who, I think the combine would win, due to having like, an infinite amount of troops.

Yeh it is based on opinion, and I hope to create some decent descussion about this, just another in my series of 'Time to spare before Episode 3', which help keep people from thinking about what is going to happen in the upcoming game. God that stuff gets annoying at times.


Anyway, I really don't think the Nazis count in this...
And, I was gona suggest the Empire from star wars, they are probablly my second.

The Combine definitely have a great background, and I like how we still don't know much about them, their history, their true power, their homeworld, etc, it gives them an air of mysteriousness.

They are much "darker" than the Empire from SW IMO, the way they exploit the citizens and how it looks as if they have "no soul" since they are genetically enhanced ( I know the Empire has much of this too, but whenever I think of the Empire I think of Ewoks or any other "jolly" thing from the SW universe). Both the Combine and the Empire remind me of the Nazis, as I think the creators of both were inspired by the Nazis.

edit: ahh I just remembered the Kerberos Panzer Cops (I think that's what they're called) from Jin-Roh, they were pretty kick-ass altho they're basically Nazis.

Most of the combine we kill are just humanoids in puffy suits. I prefer to fight things like real humans.

no seriously, i can't think of an enemy with that much background. i don't know, but maybe i don't play often games which have a great story. NBA 2kx? Story? NfS? C&C? NOLF? The only game i can think of could be Monkey Island, but LeChuck isn't really a frightning enemy. At least it suprised me, that he is Guybrushs brother, THAT was nice. anyways, the combine are great.

I must say, I think that Cloverfield monster was a formidable foe in the movie, but I think that the Combine could decimate one of those in a split second.

I do agree with you, but I still had more fun with the marines and black ops in HL1.

Poll options are fail TBH. We're discussing the Combine from a story/mythology point of view, I don't think they are the greatest enemy ever but that doesn't mean I dislike them.

In truth we don't know much about he Combine. We know they are a vast empire that takes over worlds and assimilates the local life forms and technology into a diverse but “unified” whole. Appart from their technology, we know that the Advisers appear to be in charge on earth but we have no idea what is the original Combine race that started the empire. There is martial law on earth but their government system on their already assimilated worlds is a mystery to us. We know they modify the races they take over so it may be unlikely that we will see any Combine unit that is unaltered. I could go on for a long time about the things we know, the things we half know, the things we think we know, and the things we don't know for a very long time, but in conclusion the Combine are a mystery. And that is why they make a great enemy.

I must agree with you, in such a fight the ultralisks would be their strider killers, and it wouldn't take them 8 rockets... Hmm would striders be tall enough to get hit by the scourge?
