Just started building my very first PC today, I've been taking all the precautions and plugging in things where they should be. But I'm stumped now. The PSU is hooked up to the wall, and when I press the button to start the computer itself, it's not running. I know that power is going through it because the motherboard's LED lit up, pretty green. But nothing else is doing anything.

AMD 64 3000+
A8V Deluxe
Thermaltake 430w PSU

Stupid question, are you sure the cpu is correctly put in?

I took a PC apart and put it back together (to properly clean it) for the first time this week too. I to ran into problems getting it to start up properly.

What I did was download the hardware manual from the company that made my motherboard. It was an Asus P3B-I, or something like that. After googling the name, I found/printed the hardware hookup page and found the source of my problems. I had plugged the starter button cable in the sound slot.

I'm still a newbie to hardware materials, but that manual thing really helped. I wouldn't know what else to recommend.

Yeh I think that what A True Canadian said would be the most likely fault. If you still cant get it work then unplug everything thats not needed and I mean everything, firewire, usb hubs, hard discs, the lot so that you only have the motherboard with the cpu, ram and a display card. Even take out the pci cards. If it doesn't start up then, then you must have something wrong with either the ram, video card or the cpu. Try reseating all these componants and then giving it a try.

Yeah, I tried booting up with just the HDD, gpu, cpu, and mobo. Still nothing.

I plugged in... (to mobo according to my manual)
a hdd sata cable
power SW
hdd led
mobo led
reset SW
- all the PSU connectors required into the mobo (atx power connector, power fan, atx12v)

No USBs plugged in (I dunno even where to plug them in anyway)

I used to get a green led on my mobo, but now I only get a high pitch sound. :(
Edit - I found out the sound is coming from the PSU. This sucks.

One time I thought I did something wrong but it really was just the power chord was ****ed up and I even got a new psu and it turned out it was just the chord try using a different one.

The power cord is hooked up to the same multiplug this computer is in. OK, the green light turned on after some tinkering, still no "beep". :(

try to see if your ram is put in right. my comp was making a loud beep noise all i did was take out the ram and put it back in.

You shouldn't be surprised if your rig doesn't boot up the first time actually. Mine didn't either. Make sure you didn't leave anything out and make sure everyting is properly installed. Mine didn't boot up the first time because I forgot to lock the handle on the motherboard...

Is it remotely possible the motherboard is fried? The LED lights are on, mobo and cpu leds, and all the fans are on. Only the GPU + RAM + CPU + PSU are connected to the mobo, and I'm pretty darn sure are all correctly installed.

y dont u call tech support and not post things to most of us who dont know how to fix ur problem

Is your computer case's power button connected correctly to the board?

my computer doesn't beep, mine talks to me :D. If memory or video is screwy it tells me. Gotta love my mobo

Heh yeh those Voice commands that it gives when there is a problem is pretty cool. Scared the hell out of me when I first tried them out!
