Company of Heroes = the best game ever?

Great for destroying buildings, emptying them, and torching infantry.

But the most amusing way to clear buildings remains ramming them with a crab flail and reducing the troops inside to pink mist.

COH DX10 Patch Available Today!

Great news! The long awaited and much anticipated DX10 patch comes out this afternoon 1PM Californian time for Company of Heroes. Developed by Relic and published by THQ this award winning game was extremely popular both with gamers and industry pundits alike. It stole a lot of work time here and was the 'most-borrowed-from-the-sample-cupboard' game of the last year. :)

PLEASE NOTE: The DX10 patch will be available via the in-game download/update feature.

Our dev tech team led by Peter Young and Ignaciao Llamas worked hard with Shane Neville and the team at Relic to add the following DX10 effects to the game.

- Per-pixel lighting for all objects
- Percentage Closer Filtering (PCF) shadows: Multi-tap PCF shadows utilize Shader Model 4.0 sample comparison functions for softer, more realistic shadows
- Shadows for omnidirectional point lights: supports up to 4 simultaneous point lights with shadows using DX10's render-to-cubemap and Geometry Shader functionality.
- Soft particles. Particle effects smoothly blend on contact with terrain and other objects improving visual quality.
- CSAA support (Coverage Sampling Antialiasing): CSAA produces antialiased images that rival the quality of 8x or 16x MSAA, while introducing only a minimal performance hit over standard (typically 4x) MSAA.
- Short volumetric grass using DX10-instanced terrain shells
- DX10-instanced foliage and ambient objects
- DX10 alpha to coverage (transparency antialiasing)

i need geforce 8 ;(

Considering that this is an RTS and the units/texture aren't extremely detailed (meant to be viewed from the camera pulled back), I'll take my impressions of what DX10 can do from FPS games like Crysis.

I'll publish some screens later on this weekend. Picking up my new rig later today.

Opposing Fronts looks amazing. I've been back into COH lately, and trying my hand at mapmaking as well (just learning at the moment, it's refreshingly different from FPS/Source mapping but just as annoyingly arduous).

I'm up to play at some point if anyone wants to (repiV?!)

I'll check it out. I've been getting used to vanilla COH again, I haven't played since just before 1.4 came out to be honest.

Ennui how well does your system run COH since I'm planning on a getting a system soon that has similar specs to yours except the video card is an 8800 GTS 640mb and the processor is an athlon 64 5400+ X2.

B_MAN: Wish I was. I played the COH alpha and beta but missed the signup to this one.

BigBoss7556: The processor and RAM performs beautifully. I have on high settings, not max in everything, and it runs very smoothly (and it's gorgeous I might add). You'll have no problem since the only thing holding me back is the GPU and you'll have DX10 :D

theres gonna be an open beta on fileplanet at some point
contest winners are getting first dibs though apparently

He and I played many games after release.

I'll play with you too. I have before. Same with B_Man and pretty much everyone else in this thread.

Just bought this game off Steam, playing through the singleplayer campaign, sadly though it loves to lock up on my system, haven't played through a single mission without getting atleast one lockup, even on LOWEST settings so it cant be the game running out of video memory.:(

It was fun till I had to start building bases. that just got boring and all the squad tactics n shit got looked so much more distant and gay.

CoH without building= awesome.

Played a bit of vanilla CoH since I can't get into any games in the beta. Just a simple 1v1 on Semois or Angoville against a random can be so much fun. I played Allies since everyone seems to favour Axis nowadays. First game I went Airborne doctrine but Relic seems to have nerfed the airborne troops quite a bit since I last played. Switched to Armor doctrine the next game and that went a lot better. Rush to produce 2 armored cars and get Raid. Proceed with pumping out 3 Shermans before Ze Germans can even say 'Stug'. I love rushing noobs hehehe. Can't wait for Relic to get the beta working properly. Now I *really* want to try out the new sides. This game is so much fun.

I like micro-managing battles in CoH, using grenades, cover, flanking, exploiting the rear armour etc but then if I have to do two things at once (ie, two battles, or a battle while trying to secure territiores) I get a bit disorientated and everything falls apart. I suck at paying attention to two things at once :(

Focus on one fight then. Just chose the one that is most important to you and make sure you win. Just ignore the second fight.

And, yes, micro-managing is cool. I love to out-circle a Stug with my Sherman. "Lets dance!"

Or better, if you have two shermans, put one on either side, that way he has to expose his flank to one of them :)

Just installed this again. Looks like they fixed the black screen bug with ATi cards. Yey! :D

Alrighty, I've been away from this game for awhile and decided to reinstall.

But holy shit, there's like 50 ****ing patches.

Are there any full updates around that update the first fresh install version to the latest and greatest? D:

This is marmite as a video game it would appear.

I am yet to play it.

Oh, wow.

Just found a handy website. COH Patch, it has a guide for those of us that are a bit easily confused when it comes to multiple patches.
Holy shit, there's a 1.77gb patch!? what the hell.

It really is an epic game, youre seriously missing out if youve yet to play it.

The expansion packm, Opposing Fronts, is just as good and a great addition comes in the 2 new factions, which just mixes it all up and makes battles more interesting.
OF's biggest problem is the fact that you HAVE to be online to even play the singleplayer, and youre forced to download patches, all mainly aimed at multiplayer changes, even if you dont play it multiplayer. Its the most stupid thing ever, so when you, I dunno, go on holiday and want to play it if your laptop can handle it (mine can, which is why im pissed off), you cant play it. And it overwrites the original CoH so even if you want to play the original, you have to log on through OF to select the original SP campaign. Its so bloody stupid. On my PC at home its fine as im always connected to the internet but come on, you shouldnt be limited if you dont have a connection or move off and want to play it on holiday or whatever.

Other than that, its awesome. A true gem in the RTS crown.

It's a pretty good game but hardly best game ever and it just got worse wit the way relic destroyed it with the patch system

I stopped playing after Opposing Fronts. The two new sides were completely overpowered, and there was a new login system which required you to be online even for the single player. Meh.

Still a pretty cool game, I might dust it off some day when I have bandwidth to spare (holyshitpatches).

This game was weird for me.

I played the multiplayer beta for around forty hours, bought the game and played for maybe five. Then I uninstalled and never looked back. I am never any good at RTSs; I don't know why I try.

Holy christ, just tried playing against easy allied AI in Skirmish and I got my ass handed to me when they had tank destroyers! D:

Couldn't pump out anything fast enough.

Its the Opposing Fronts one, it contains all the units, maps and whatnot from OF, but won't let you use any of it until you actually buy the EP, but it does allow you to play battles with people who do have the EP.
