Completely confused - is it Direct3D or OpenGL? Or Both? (Conspiracy Warning)

Has Valve slipped in under the radar here and provided a good mode for Nvidia cards after all?

Everything ever mentioned about HL2 engine revolved around DirectX9 (Direct3D). Now the beta is stolen and we discover that in fact the only working mode on it is the OpenGL mode?!?!?!?!

I wish we could get Valve to answer some questions about this. It's possible that this beta is an OpenGL beta - perhaps Valve was working on making ammends with Nvidia FX owners?

But if it turns out this beta was never meant to see the light of day, then how does Valve expalin it? Was it just something they were tossing around? Or was this something that was cancelled when they decided to go with the ATI endorsement?

Valve is seriously losing respect in my book. But before I cast the first stone, it would be nice to get some straight answers from them for once. And maybe they'll talk with Vivendi first and agree on a statement together for once?

we need open gl for all the voodoo2 users.

Hope i can still install WickedGL. It gave a nice preformance boost in HL.

That was my impression. I thought the only game modes were DirectX 6 through DirectX 9.

Did it not occur to you that the code might not be COMPLETE?

Why would they write a complete Open GL mode if they didn;t plan to use it in the final release?

That's not the point. I'm sure there is fully a featured DirectX mode in the code. That's what Valve was pushing the whole time.

My question is what's up with OpenGL being in the code and have ATI and Nvidia cards been tested in this mode and what are the performance benchmarks?

I read in som other thread that D3D could not be enabled in the video settings... Cant someone that have the "beta" try his?

One way could be to enable FSAA&Ansi for D3d and disabling it for OpenGL... Just to make sure what mode the game is running in....

Or if someone with the beta have a Nvidia card and in the compability settings enables the Nvidia-logo for D3D apps...

Then we would know if its OpenGl or D3D....

Unless - this is part of the "Mixed Mode" Valve wrote for Nvidia cards?

I was assuming all along by mixed mode, they meant blending DirectX 8 with a few DirectX 9 features to keep FX cards up to speed.

Maybe that's why it's in there? Maybe the Mixed Mode is actually OpenGL with Direct3D extensions?

I'm so confused! :rolling:

it uses direct3d even if opengl is selected
I adjust the direct3d antialiasing and anisotropic filtering settings in the ati control panel and it takes effect ingame

hmmm.... interesting....

If there is an OpenGL mode, I'd love to see how it runs, compared to the Direct 3D mode.

To run the Beta in DIRECTX9 place "-dx9" in the shortcut when you run the game.

I'm assuming -dx8 works too, but I don't know.
