Agnosticism: the belief that the existence of God is not knowable.
Atheism: the belief that God does not exist.
(both found with googles define:<word here> feature)

I do not believe that God exists.
But I admit the possibility that God exists.
And I do not believe that any of the religions on earth are divine.

In other words.
"I don't think God exists, but there is no way to be sure and I don't think any of earth religions are right"

I suppose that makes me (given all of the above) Agnostic even though I've always thought myself as an Atheist.

Edit: how did we get so far off topic?

Yeah, if you just grab one definition that fits yours, but here's others:
a lack of belief in the existence of God or gods

Atheism is the state either of being without theistic beliefs, or of actively disbelieving in the existence of deities. In antiquity, Epicureanism incorporated aspects of atheism, but it disappeared from the philosophy of the Greek and Roman traditions as Christianity gained influence. ...

An atheist is one who does not believe in the existence of God or gods. Pretty simple, right?

But just analyze the word for a bit here. A theist is someone who believes in the existence of a God as creator for the universe. The 'a' in atheist, means 'non', so an atheist is someone who does not believe in a God as the creator of the universe. Someone who believes there is no God, or denies there could be one, is an antitheist or strong atheist.

I too have argued the etymology of the word, but it just doesn't seem to matter to a lot of people.

All that needs to be known is that atheism covers both people who make the assertion that there is no god as well as those merely lacking theistic beliefs. Of course, good luck finding somebody who won't misrepresent atheism completely and try to ascribe some kind of aspect of morality to it.

I used to play that game for like 8 hours each day. Then I just like quit playing it now it is even hard for me to play it for about 3 hours. I don't know I think I could get back into it if I wanted but I will wait until summer again!

I choose that one because it was the simplest. Every definition I found for atheist explicitly stated a disbelief in god as an definition but not every definition had "without theistic beliefs" as a definition. While 'true' definition probably encompasses both if you tell somebody you're atheist they are more likely to think "you don't believe in god" rather than "you don't believe in god or you are without theistic beliefs".

Well done for posting on topic ;)

How the word originated doesn't matter as much as what it means now. Thats not to say its totally meaningless however.

Logic is never meaningless. Absence of theism is atheism. Agnosticism, with its current, modern misuse, still qualifies as atheism, making it redundant and misinforming. At the very least, it shows that a lot of people don't know what the hell gnosis really is.

I don't accept the current status quo of bastardization just because people want to feel better about being godless. There is no purpose to the agnostic "middle ground" (except to avoid offending fundies) and it has no business existing on the continuum. If you really want to distinguish a simple lack of belief from the active denial of deities, then for the love of god, call it something else.

since when this thread turn into the meaning of the existence of logic?

Never got into that game....not sure why

Because there's no personal taste, there is just your taste.. right?

I hate people who feel the need to tell others what they should like and what not.
Hey the man got a pair of "footy boots", we should listen to him. :p
