Once again, spoiler warning!

Ok... I love scary games. LOVE 'em. I'm hard to scare, so the genuine sensation of fear is pretty awesome. And for the most part, Condemned has been perfect. Completely intense, occasionally quite scary, absolutely insanely brutal... it's amazingly fun.

But then it got scarier. And scarier. I mean, the crawly f*ckers in the train station are pretty creepy, but that just makes killing them all the more fun. And the Library really wasn't that bad.

But the school? NO. F*CK NO. That is some f*cked up shit right there. The enemies are far more insane/creepy than before, the place is extremely atmospheric, and the plot... well, lemme tell you, as soon as I found the teacher's lips (sans the rest of him) on a blackboard, I knew I was in for some fun... and finding the rest of him may very well have been the scariest thing I've seen since the Sloth scene in "Se7en".

In fact, this whole game is like the digital version of Se7en. I'm in the farmhouse right now, I've followed three of the trails, and the one I just took led me through the basement... :shudder: that was terrifying. Following the trail of nonsense, turn around, and BOOM- some crazy burn victim-looking type is ripping at me, and it seems like it's taking an hour for me to take out my sledgehammer, and by the time he's finally dead there's another one, and now it's dark, and there's a lot of blood, and...

D:

Anyway, the point is, this game is f*cking me up. I'm pretty scared right now. I love it, but I'm simply not in the condition to play it any more. I think I'm gonna go kill some goblins in a "wholesome" game like Oblivion, or... anything but this. My nerves need a break.

So, anyone else experiencing/experience this?

This game is scary as shit, I'm in the store right now and those crawley guys are so low to the ground that I end up running right into one and then going "wtf, invisible wall?" then they jump up and scare every fluid out of me

I love this game

Glad to see a game that can deliever a genuine horror experience. I hear its combat is like Riddick, is that true?

Never played Riddick... but if it is, I'm getting it :D

I LOVE the weapons system. Seriously, ripping a pipe off a wall and beating an addict till he's unconscious with it, only to kill him with a face-breaking headbutt, is AWESOME. And pulling the blade off a paper-cutter to use as a sword? Off the CHAIN. Plus, the way the actual weapons have like ZERO ammo is just plain awesome. It forces you to vary the way you fight. <3 <3 <3.

Too bad I'm still too scared to play D:

EDIT: Dalamari, you're in the store? Whooooo boy. Prepare to piss yourself later on.

In my opinion its better then Riddick even tho they made it great in that game aswell.

I might pick up Condemned for the pc as a collectors thing. Already have it and beat it on the 360. Really is a great game.

I just found the dead body, the part with the maniquins following me around might have been the scarriest moment in a game ever

gah, now i must spend my valuable food pennies and revision time on this "condemned" you speak of

No, Dalamari, that's not the body I'm talking about... trust me, you'll know it when you see it. It's a good deal later on. I'm veeeeeery far (I've probably played it six hour straight today, plus a few hours yesterday).

There's more than one corpse? I just found the first one in the dressing room set up next to the woman maniquin

Yeah, there's definitely more than one. I'm not gonna give anything away, but like I said earlier, it's at a school. If you're not at a school, you haven't found the one I'm talking about yet. It's... definitely jarring. "Gut-wrenchingly awful" might actually be a better term :x

EDIT: Just beat it \o/

Ugh all this talk sort of wants me to keep playing the game, but I'm too scared :(

Ahhh can't wait to get this, I shouldn't have read all this but I just can't help myself

Haha, this is the game I've been looking for ever since I completed AvP and Avp 2 and Silent Hill 2. When I played these games I could just play for an hour or until I died, I was completley terrified all the way through AvP, Avp 2 and partly Silent Hill 2, not to mention all the increased heartbeats I had while playing. Anyway I've been playing the Condemned Demo for a while now, I just love the terrifying, intense fights and how easy it is to get killed if an enemy hits you with the right tool in the right place. And from what you just wrote, it feels like the Demo is'nt even scary compared to the rest of the game :D

Oh trust me the game can get so ****ed up its insane. Its like your playing and you say to yourself, wtf can these people just stop for once. Give me a break, lol. Really there are some parts were your just saying to yourself that is so ****ed up..Really is a great game. Props to monolith to bringing us 2 great games the same year.

I haven't heard of this "Condemned", but I've played FEAR and I'll tell ya it's probably one of the greatest FPSs I've played. So, if this is another masterpiece by MONOLITH I'll definitely have to get it:p .

There is a demo. A bit short but pretty cool. Check it out.

I don't get scared much whilst playing games, so it came as a complete suprise when I was forced to stop playing in the Apple Seed Orchard house. I couldn't go on. I stopped, I heard footsteps. I was in an old, run-down house in the middle of a forest. I was shitting.
Condemned is a superb game. Sadly FEAR missed this title by a mile.

Just played the demo. Wasn't really scarey as the FEAR demo was, but it was pretty fun.

Haven't played the game a ton yet (only in the subway station) but I have some gripes.

Sure there's a noir setting but why does every perfectly good location have to be completely abandoned and full of overly violent "addicts" that manage to all find a weapon to pull from the overly-dilapidated walls when the crime has risen only 28% (it's a lot overall but wtf is this...addict central?). I'd expect to see some npcs out there that are drugged up and neutral...maybe passed out or just crashing somewhere. I don't expect EVERY person to be abolutely insane. It also annoyed me when I wasted my last shell on an addict that jumped up on this balcony in a Doom 3-like scare only to find that the addict didn't even exist. My shot went right through his head and hit the back wall. He let go of the balcony and was gone... My shell didn't hit anything but the wall... I also somehow managed to tazer a guy to death... Speaking of the tazer - I think it makes the game too simple. Simply tazer, grab their weapon and hit them a couple times.

The lack of realism in the situation just gets to me in a game like this. You're an FBI agent that lives in a SHITTY apartment yet you make a good salary. The con manages to kill those 2 cops in the very beginning when in real life that guy would've been dead as or before he turned around. You wake up perfectly fine after taking a 2+ story fall through a window, hitting the roof of a car. The police somehow instantly are SURE that you are the one that pulled the trigger on those 2 officers. Who keeps a shotgun or handgun under lock and key or a safe when they have ONE round in the chamber and that's it?

Those "finishing moves" you can do feel out of place. This isn't Postal 2... I'm not playing this to take out agression through a game or anything. I see no reason to put in the 4 attacks you can do as these addicts get stunned before death. Feels too Mortal Kombat...you might as well rip off your mask and torch them with flames from your mouth or rip out their spine while you're at it...

I dunno. The "plot" just hasn't really begun yet... I don't really care about these birds or metal scraps that I'm looking for and I don't see why I should care that dead birds are directly related to crime...

Read the briefing before each mission, they help with why everyone in that area is crazy and the dead birds, I just got to the library and had to stop, I might save it for the weekend so I can get REALLY into it and maybe beat the rest of it in a marathon session.

Oblivion has kept me from playing Condemned lately. It is a really fun game though.

My only gripe is that the going is so slow. Even when you're supposedly sprinting. I guess that tries to add to the atmosphere of being outnumbered and alone in very desolate and creepy locations.

If you collect all the dead birds and metal pieces it unlocks articles in the game. I think it was the metal pieces that did that and the birds unlocked concept art. Not sure. One of the reveals more about the story.

The only thing I didn't like about this game:
1. I didn't really understand who the hell was this guy you fought in the end?
2. why collect birds?
3. what the hell are those metal pieces for?
4. the weapons are totally unpowerful, they shoot slow and their sound is pretty quiet. You just don't feel like shooting a shotgun. And who the hell would survive three shotgun blasts in the face - I had a few situations like this in the game...
5. I agree on the lack of npc's, it was a bit boring to find all humanoids hostile
6. why so dark? Even FEAR wasn't as dark. Hell, even Doom 3 wasn't that dark! The first game I played with the flashlight on 100% of the time. Thank god for Ni-MH battery cells :p
7. the game has completely no replayability. When will developers learn about random placing of enemies? I remember SWAT3 - terrorists and hostages were never in the same place, no matter how many times you played a single mission!

All in all, it was a good game, had some very scarry moments that made me jump or even shout "oh ****!" (yeah, call me a wimp :D). It was also bloody, I liked that... but sometimes there was not enough blood :) A big plus for melee combat.

I liked the hand-to-hand more than Oblivion, it really keeps you on your toes.

Condemned's Melee combat beats Riddick and oblivion. Really intense and it really feels like you hit a guy in the face with a 2x4

Well, for intensity, yes. However, while the blocking system DOES get rid of that cheap "hold down right click for your life" tactic, it subsequently makes blocking somewhat hit-or-miss. Of course, it gets easier as you play more, but even so.

I think melee was much better done in Oblivion.

First off, you have control over various power attacks you can do which can do various special hits to the enemy.

Second, blocking is better in Oblivion. Sure you can hold block, but you still take damage when you block a hit and you can be stunned and left open to further attack as well when you block - so it's not a 100% safe move.

Third, melee in Oblivion didn't have a simple stomp maneuver to kill a downed enemy or those silly finishing moves...

Seriously, any of those crawly guys are a joke. I dont even waste time swinging my weapon or shooting my tazer. I just give them a kick and they're done. The tazer makes the game way too easy as well if you ask me. Imagine if there was a tazer that'd knock over an enemy in any other FPS to leave them open for a simple kick to finish the job IF THAT. Sometimes the enemy just dies from the tazer...

Yeah, but if you're facing more than one enemy the tazer is almost useless, you stun one and then have to either wait for it to recharge and hopefully block all their shots/not get blasted by their SMG, or go melee/commando

Dunno in oblivion it didnt even feel like i was hitting people. It felt like i was hitting air. In Condemned you hit a guy and it FEEL's like you cracked his skull. Another thing is the block its good in oblivion but i liked Condemned's better. Just feels more real. The thing i have to agree with is the finishing moves. They look cool the 1st few times you use them but they get old really fast. Tazer is fine but does make SOME parts easy. Once you master the game it gets easy but doesnt that apply to all games? I havnt really played a hard game since well...i cant remember.

The feel of melee combat only helps so much if you ask me. I'm more interested in the mechanics of how the system works and plays ingame than the feel I get.

The tazer makes like the entire game easy. If I encounter 1 guy, tazer, stomp, gg. If I encounter 2, taze one real quick and stomp him, keep the 2nd at a distance as I run in, hit back away. If I fight 3 then I just run around tazing and stomping so I don't get overwhelmed quickly. If they have guns I charge them quickly, taze and take their gun and blast everybody else.

Even when you have the old tazer it's simple because you just take their weapon from them while they're stunned and beat them down with it while they're defenseless.

There's always plenty of health kits nearby when you need them so being a bit bold in battles is no problem.

I found a lot of the combat repetitive, and annoying, but very fun and scary.

I just can't go on anymore, I can't keep playing a game like this for hours on end.

I agree it was alittle to easy but i think thats because its still a victim of being a console game 1st. I dont agree on the FEEL/mechanics tho. I think the feel is VERY important and the mechanics are based on what the game needs.
