thats what it keeps saying when i try and create a new account any ideas why?

You need to open some ports on your firewall. Here's a link to SteamPowered's support page.

Of course even after doing that I still can't play the game. Created the account, registered the software, unlocked the files, but the game is still unavailable.

i got the error now "engine error" - "unable to init shader system"

Well, that's farther than I can get.

Sounds like a video card/driver issue. What kind of video card are you running and when did you last update the drivers?
