Cool ass opening cinematic for Prototype (Vegeta is a colossal and ignominious fag)

The main problem with this game for me is the inability to be a good character. That's what made Infamous interesting for me, being a hero, and having that not always be easy. I see no option to be anything other than a complete terror in Prototype, something that I think will lose it's appeal after a while.

I find it far more rewarding to be celebrated, and to see physical changes in the environment and emotional changes in the NPCs as a direct result of my actions. That's what separates Infamous vastly from Prototype, despite the comparisons. Infamous is (optionally) about saving people and regenerating a devastated city, Prototype is quite the opposite.

Violence and carnage are the only selling points for Prototype, and the developers seem to have made that their primary intent. I'm sure that's exactly what some people are excited about, but personally I find continuous, unjustifiable brutality on a scale this large slightly nauseating.

Thats always been the exact opposite of how I feel about moral choices in games. They are always so superficial and gimmicky that i never feel any kind of connection with the game. I would much prefer a fleshed out linear character and get an actual story from the game. Like in God of War, awesome character and decent story. Also hes evil. Evil characters are a lot more refreshing after so many years of ideal goody two shoe characters.

Except in God of War you're in a fantastical setting killing mythical creatures. That's very different to killing people, with no more purpose than to regain memory. It seems more of an excuse than an intelligent mechanic.

Also I doubt you've played Infamous, since your criticisms of the game are not particularly valid. The moral choices have a very direct impact, it's an entirely different game depending on whether you're good or evil. While I definitely agree on most morality systems being gimmicky and tacked on, with choice seeming to be the "it" word in modern releases, Infamous is built around the concept from the ground up.

yeah in god of war there is depth and motivation behind a character like kratos but prototype we get just a really peeved off guy who gets powers.

"Woah I've got powers :D:):|:(:flame: DIE!!!!"

I dont see how Red Faction is going to be insane and over the top at all. Its just like any other shooter, but with more explosions. Just more of the same really.

I've got it, and it is. Driving your heavily-armoured vehicle through a building never, ever gets old. Connect your axe or sticky bombs with a few supporting columns and it all comes tumbling down in a thousand pieces. Geo-Mod has come a long, long way.

Played the game then have you?

Meh, not my bag. Especially since Geo-Mod took one huge step back in making the actual environment indestructible.

Everyone knows soil is far more solid than steel. Get with the physics knowledge, Krynn.

Ah, yes.

Here's your payment.

*hands you an envelope*

Yeah, seriously don't open it. They are such a terrible band.

I've played both Infamous and Prototype and I can safely say Prototype is the clear winner in virtually all counts.

Both are super-hero/villain games in a free-roaming world. Infamous gives you the typical, tired good/bad choices where being bad is usually just plain more fun and good tends to be slightly annoying.

Prototype doesn't care what you do in the world and in some cases it rewards you for collateral damage when you kill infected civilians. The overall tone is evil and selfish which is a nice change of pace for a game like this and the plot is actually interesting. Infamous was pretty predictable for the most part (barring a twist) and felt like it had been done before.

As far as actual gameplay goes - Prototype has WAY more powers, attacks and overall abilities to use in the game than Infamous does. They are over-the-top, but I'll be damned if it isn't a lot of fun to launch yourself a full city block and have a massive AOE crash when you land causing cars and dozens of npcs go flying. Prototype has much more flexible and diverse combat options to pick from whereas Infamous just modifies a few attacks with good/evil variants.

Traversing the city in an open-world game has to be fun and quick. Infamous has you rely simply on jumping from rooftops and grinding on rails or a shitload of inexplicably placed power lines. Other than that you had the glide ability which doesn't let you control your direction too well or really make you travel THAT much faster. I also found myself getting annoyed at being sniped (these gangs have uncanny accuracy) and would be forced to halt my travels through the city just to deal with them.

Prototype is a lot of fun to just run around in and cause tons of destruction. You have a glide ability that actually gives you a fair amount of control. To compliment this you have air-dashes to chain glides into each other. You can also chain all these things into wall runs which allows you to stay aloft and stay moving. If you get bored of that, you can sprint on the ground quite quickly, knocking people aside, sending them flying with your shield ability, or just hold a vehicle while charging through the streets and causing chaos. Of course you can also steal military tanks/helos and drive/fly to your destination causing destruction along the way if you want. It sure as hell beats slowly scaling buildings or just riding on rails.

The side missions are also way more fun in Prototype than they are in Infamous. Infamous sidequests were tedious or just plain boring quite often. Surveillance devices? *yawn* Escort people/prisoners while occasionally stopping to heal/smack them around? Boring.

Prototype has events that have a time limit and/or a score to achieve with medals that give incremental rewards. War missions, race missions, consume missions, killcount missions, glide missions (think target practice from pilotwings), etc.

I also like how the military's reaction to you as a threat develops in the game which ramps up the difficulty in a lot of the missions. The game starts pretty easy when you're just dealing with soldiers, a few with rocket launchers and MAYBE an APC while the military is still trying to wrap its head around you as a threat. I felt like I was too powerful for a little while. However, it gets tough when apaches get called in when you're already fighting a few tanks, a whole bunch of soldiers (some in powered armor), gun towers and maybe some infected. Add to that the fact that you can't really get by disguised later on because the super-soldiers, infection sensors and UAVs can still pick you up and keep the alert going. It can get pretty tough at times and I had to resort to hit and run tactics when I was going after enemy objectives in later missions.

Anyways, this is probably long enough unless people have questions.

Cliff notes:

[PROTOTYPE]

How long is the game. And is it really worth 50 bucks?

My 1st playthrough took me about 14 hours. Depending on how much you replay games, it may be a rental.

Also, I'd like to note that I'm really impressed at absolutely ZERO slowdown in Prototype even when there are over 75 civilians, a bunch of cars and all kinds of other crazy shit getting blown up at once.

On what platform?

Sweet. This thread made me all sad that i reserved a copy, but you've made me happy again.

Have you played Crackdown?

I really liked Crackdown. It was shockingly addictive to gather those agility orbs :p

Prototype is better though, hands down.

Shittiest ****ing taste ever. :arms:
Fixed.

(Unless you mean everything without Belladonna of course...:p)

EDIT: Hmm, IGN just gave Prototype a 7.5. Their criticisms are pretty severe too. See below quote:

Prototype is a game with many cool features. However, it lacks many of the finishing touches that make for a great and memorable game. To say the graphics and game engine need work is a massive understatement and many of the missions are cookie cutter in design without any real focus or attention to detail. Thankfully, Alex Mercer's absorbing and shape shifting powers manage to overcome many of the shortcomings of Prototype. Though the missions themselves aren't anything special, the vast array of powers provides their own variety and flair.

Reading the ign review now even though I'm not a big fan of their reviews.

What I'm amazed is this is out in 2 days but still not amny reviews are out. From a PR stand point that's not good.

I played about an hour and a half of it, and holy **** its fun to just wreck stuff. There are a lot of powers you can get, a lot of specials and combos. I've only gotten like two upgrades so far, and they're pretty insignificant ones. But jeez they are fun. Controls aren't amazing, but you wont have much trouble. Its got a similar lock on system to GTA4. And damn its brutal. Seriously, its like God of War style brutality.

Voice acting is decent, but the dialogue when hes talking to himself is pretty lame. Dialogue with other characters is fine though. Absorbing people's memories is a really neat thing, and presented well. Graphics are standard, they're nothing phenomenal, but they're better than average. I dont know what was up that IGN reviewer's butt when he came down so hard on the visuals. Its above average models, and textures, but your demon moves and shit are bad ass. I thought it might be cheesy, but its pretty cool looking. Disguising yourself is kinda cool, doesnt seem like its been really necessary so far, but i can see it being handy when the difficulty ramps up and you need to lose the heat. Moving around is pretty easy. Its kind of like Assasins Creed, in that you hold the sprint key and he kinda does everything for you, but you still have a fair amount of control over it, since you can still jump or turn at any point while hes doing his thing.

Story seems decent. Pretty standard so far, but im not too much into it yet.

Anyways, my first impressions were that I love this game. Its Crackdown on crack.

Just wait until you max out movement powers and start unlocking some of the end-game powers. Those ones get to be a lot of fun :D

*bounces up and down waiting for the download to finish*

It's fun for about an hour or two. You get some sweet powers, throw wrecked tanks off rooftops at helicopters and skip most of the shitty cutscenes. Then you get bored and decide to do some missions. After two or three you suspect that they're all pretty much the same, which wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing if they actually focused on the game's strengths. Then, you get most of your cool powers taken away from you by the story and have to do a bunch of boring vehicle missions plus a "defend the chump" mission. Unwilling to jump through hoops in order to enjoy the game, you alt-f4, uninstall, and go back to playing Dwarf Fortress.

**** that boss fight with the green orbs. It was fairly easy and I didn't mind having to bash the crap out of her several times but then the bitch had the nerve to go underground with no health bar left. Your're DEAD stop fighting me you cow.
