2. Gordon freeman (hes a scientist who has no experience with guns. Plus he looks like a prat. no offence, gordon... the games amazing, and the character is OK, its just you never actually hear, see or mention him in the game).

I think this is precisely what makes Gordon Freeman cool. He's not a highly trained special ops soldier, he's just a MIT-educated scientist trying to survive. In the process of trying to survive he manages to wipe out an entire division of marines and an invading alien army singlehandedly, without any previous combat training. Pretty f*cking awesome in my opinion. Also, the fact that he never talks helps the player become the character, it adds another level of immersion that other games don't have.

Sam doesn't need to talk much to be cool, just look at all his moves! Have you seen his split jump?

For Gordon your right, HL is maybe one of the best games ever, but Gordon is not coolest character ever, that would be Master Chief.

Half-Life to an extent, it wasn't exactly character-driven but there was still that cool sensability about everyone.

Secret of Mana 2 (Seiken Densetsu 3), um... Lise and Hawk, awesome couple. Not really story-driven at all but they had cool art ^^;

J.C. Denton of Deus Ex. He just had such a refined character, and you felt like you could really control him. I really liked the way he suited either good or evil so well.
