I know you guys often post stories of how authority figures do evil stuff or abuse their power, but here's some perspective.
Nothing I have ever seen before matches this for sheer grotesquery.

A cop severs his artery and lies on the road begging for help. Two ministers stand around and do nothing, while a car is just feet away from them. God forbid anyone touch him before the ambulance arrives!

Read the sordid details for yourself.

There's also a youtube video, but it's too grisly to link here. :x

The cop was part of the team that hunted down Veerapan. Doesn't that make him a hero of sorts? From what I understood when reading about it 5 years ago Veerapan was like the über Al Capone of India.

And indeed horrifying. I am not too familiar with the workings of the caste system nowadays but could that have played a role?

No. For God's sake, don't bring up the caste system to explain every Indian failing!

Yes, there was a time when caste was used as grounds for discrimination. (And maybe it still is to some extent.) But the reason caste is still alive and well today is because it gives the people (especially the underprivileged) a sense of community and solidarity. It is also a powerful tool for political change. For example, many political parties pander exclusively to lower castes. I know that looks bad to an outsider or an NRI, but you have to understand that it is an institution through which the political process operates; it divides society on socioeconomic lines so that all classes are politically represented. Whether you like it or not, caste will remain relevant until there is absolute equality in India.

Sorry for that but it was the first thing that came to mind. The story had a "lets not touch that filthy commoner" vibe. I knew I was going to get in trouble when bringing up castes .... :(

It's India, what did you guys expect?

Yeah, that well-known Indian stereotype of watching people bleed to death.
Do you even think about what you're typing, or do you just bash the keys randomly, while the spittle of rampant xenophobia and borderline racism drips off your chin and pools on your desk?

I neither xenophobic or racist.

What i meant by "what do guys expect? it's India" Is that this kind of stuff happens all the time over there. If you are a person at the low end of the social class no one cares about you.

what can i say...primitives and savages.

(those that caused this and those that didn't bother to help)

It's worth mentioning that they are black.

Indians are black right?

It's India, what did you guys expect?

I expected civilised people to be, well... civilised. How silly of me.

Also I had no idea about this cast bullshit. :|

cast system...humanity at its best

Every society has a class system, castes were simply a more explicit way to create social strata. As I understand it the system has been abolished for some time now, but it still lingers a bit. Although I understand from Vikram's post that castes seem to have turned into the Godwin of the Indian subcontinent.

True, but the cast system is such a shiny example.

OMG! OMG! RACIST!!!! RACIST!! xenophobic!!!@?@?

Pi Mu Rho, why have you not replied to him?

The cast system in that country is massive.

I neither xenophobic or racist.

Sure you are not.

They are obviously not that civilized.

Do you just type down the thing that comes to your mind without thinking it through ? You probably don't even know anything about India and just types down knowledge based on movies or something.

Lol those 3 things you pointed out are not racist or xenophobic.

Please tell me how pointing out the fact that there is a massive crap cast system in India racist or xenophobic?

I bet you are just one of those people who just call all criticism of another society racist and xenophobic when it isn't even valid.

Educated yourself. I know a hell of alot about India, so there goes your theory out the door.

Well just so you know, I grew up in India and then moved to New Zealand. As Vikram pointed out, caste system in India is not that strong nowadays barring some rural areas. The political parties when the election arrives just play on the caste system to get more votes. btw, it's not about Indians being not civilized thoseministers were just being douches, there are many people in India who actively worked to get rid of the caste system and are still doing so now. Barring the occasional acts of riots and terrorisms India despite being a supposed "third world" country are a very tolerant country. Something that cannot be said for some first world countries.

My friend was telling me stories about how he used to see people fall off a train and get caught underneath, or how they'd get run over by buses, and people just kept going on with their errands. :|

RACIST!!!@!@@? YOU ARE RACIST!?@? YOU ARE XENOPHOBIC!!!!

Stop being an idiot or you'll find out just how low on the caste system you are in this forum.

I am not being an idiot. I am proving a point. As soon as i stated a fact about the country that wasn't a good fact i was called a racist and xenophobic. Yet when Krynn72 basically says the same thing but in the form a story, he's not racist or xenophobic.

haha you literally called India uncivilized and implied that "they" are inferior because of it, and now you're claiming you're not racist.

There's a difference between having a go at the caste system and inferring an entire race of people is uncivilized because parts of their society still employ it.

It's like how people always call us Aussies racist and backwards yet don't see the irony in the very notion of that statement.

Except that you come across as the same kind of person who would just carry on with their errands.

The difference there being that he was quoting an anecdote related to him by someone else. You were generalising the behaviour of the inhabitants of an entire country.

/facepalm

i can't be bothered

To make sense? No, plainly not.

I just call it as I see it. Funny that other people share a similar opinion.

Yeh, and your way of seeing things is wrong. There is many people like you. The instant they see someone critiziing another culture that isn't a western one or one that doesn't have white people in it, you scream racist.

Anyway i am withdrawing myself from the conversation, i just expect a "no i am not" or a "No you're racist" in reply.

See, when you're accused of being a racist, saying "I'm not a racist" has no effect, becuase that's what they all say.

I don't care if you're racist or not, I equally dislike you becuase your conduct is annoying and the stench of ignorance in your post is very annoying.

I for one think India's a pretty respectable country, it's secular, progressive and provides our economies with much needed cheap labour to outsource.

This was never going to be a decent thread anyway though, it's not like somebody was going to chime in with "I for one support the gunmen". So the best we could have hoped for in retrospect was a little closet racism to give us something to type about,

Have you noticed that the moment you see someone criticising your opinions or calling you racist you scream person who screams racist the moment they see you criticising another culture?

I was called a racist and a xenophobic for saying India has a massive cast system, that's FACT they do. How is that my opinion when it's fact?

So we are all at the stage now of calling people racist when they point out facts?

See, when you're accused of being a racist, saying "I'm not a racist" has no effect, becuase that's what they all say.

Well really it should. Basically by be denying i'm racist and then saying that's wrong i am, you are in a way saying that you know better then me, what i am. I think i would know better then you, what i am.

If India's "massive cast system" (good job on the spelling there boyo) is a FACT, then why do people on this board who come from or who have lived in India keep contradicting you on a factual basis? You completely ignored the last guy who told you that you were talking nonsense.

It's not like you made a strong and well-reasoned argument as to how the caste system is the root cause of behaviour like this. Or any kind of evidential argument that these incidents happen more often in India than in civilised countries. Or any kind of argument at all.

Instead we just get "well, what do you expect? it's India!!"

Sweeping, generalising statement tarring an entire country as uncivilised savages, with absolutely no supporting arguments or evidence. You can't really blame us for assuming that you're harbouring an irrational and unsupported prejudice.

So you are saying there is no cast system in India? All i stated in that post was that there is a massive cast system in India. Nothing more, nothing less. I never said the cast system is the root cause of the behaviour so that's irrelevant. All i stated was there is a cast system.

Nice attempt at being a troll.

LOOK IT SAYS IT RIGHT THERE

and what happened to

Anyway i am withdrawing myself from the conversation

:dozey:

Why do you keep spelling "caste" wrongly? ARGH.

It severely irritates me.

Anyway, all he said was that in India this is nothing to be surprised about. Perhaps stuff like that happens on a frequent basis over there? I don't know, but you prolly wouldn't call him a racist for pointing out that the US frequently has gun crime (compared).

No, I'm not agreeing with him, because I am ignorant on whether India is a shit place to live or not.

If you disagree with my post, I was wrong, and I'm sorry, please don't stone me on the town square.

He actually said "They are obviously not that civilized." after posting "It's India what do you expect" and he's gone back and edited that part out. That's where people took exception to what he said and now he's claiming he simply said the caste system was wrong and everyone's calling him racist because he criticized the caste system, which isn't true at all.

Now he's having a go at Sulkdodds for being a troll when Sulks pretty much said an elaborated version of what I posted earlier.
