Crazy Cyclists!

Totally.

I'd quite like you Americans to respect our spelling and words.
It's our language, if you want to use it, you do it our way.

When they pay road tax, then maybe. :p

Nobody pays road tax. There isn't any such thing. Its called Vehicle Excise Duty, and is a licence that allows you to use your vehicle on the public highway.

Cyclists, horses, and pedestrians have a right in law to use the highways.

So :p

Uh. The 19th century would be AFTER the 16th century. You do realize that America and Britian have been two seperate countries for...oh...about 200+ years. I think that gives us plenty of leeway to develop our differences in what USED to be the same exact language.

America and Britain have always been two separate countries.

Interestingly, your version of English was specifically designed to be different from that of your colonial masters (us).

PS we'll be back one day, so keep the seat warm for us.

That's the stupidest statement I've ever heard. You clowns misuse English just as much, if not more (and it's definately way more) than we do. Just because you're English doesn't mean you speak the language well at all, most of you use words incorrectly all the time.

Heh, whoops! That's not a good idea when trying to make a point, albeit a poor one.

And? It doesn't change the fact that you're just as bad as we are.

Americans are always targeted for being too patriotic and such, well you people are just the same with your language and "holier-than-thou" bullshit attitude that you're so much better than everyone else. It's just as much our language as it is yours, we have 65% of the English speakers in the world after all, not you.

Oh, and it's not a poor point at all, it's a ****ing fact. Look at the poor English on these boards, and then look at the ridiculously impossible amount of UK'ers on these boards. You're no better.

Languages naturally diverge. Especially when two countries are seperated by a boundary of water and there are no spelling laws. Americans had already developed a distinct accent and spellings by the mid 1700's. When webster made his dictionary, he wanted to standardize american spellings with the distrinct purpose of seperating it from british english, since most people spelled things in america differentley anyway.

Actually just after the war of american independence there was a rather large movement to make the national language German, (although it was shot down in congress), since there was a considerable german minority, and they wanted to distance themselves from britian as much as possible.

And then of course, 200 years of isolation does do its toll on the way the language is spoken and spelled. Language really is a pointless thing to be proud of. Everyone thinks and speaks differentley, and it really doesn't make much difference how a language is spoken, since every language has the potential for beauty, movement and strength. I find when I study other languages I come closer to understanding the true meanings of words, and the way people think, because there are alot of binding features in languages, which really does after all make them all the same.

Wiki said:
English is the third or fourth most widely spoken as first language in the world today, after Mandarin, Hindi, and perhaps Spanish (see the ranking). A total of 600-700 million people use the various dialects of English regularly...

...The majority of English native speakers (67 to 70 per cent) live in the United States (Crystal, 1997). Although the U.S. federal government has no official languages, English has been given official status by 27 of the 50 state governments, most of which have declared English their sole official language. Hawaii, Louisiana, and New Mexico have also designated Hawaiian, French, and Spanish, respectively, as official languages in conjunction with English.

Anything that conveys ideas is a language IMo, and I couldn't care less about history, diversity, culture...

One day I shall unite the world under a single language - gibberish!

Our patriotisms differ in great ways. You lot will defend anything from America, and I've seen on this forum and so many other places that if someone naysays even the most minor thing, they get completely clusterf*cked by what appears to be half the American population. We, on the other hand, are patriotic about some key things - our use of the language, our comedy, our drinking etc. You never see us jumping on the bandwagon to defend most things, because we know they're shit anyway.

I love how you bring in the 'holier-than-thou' point, then very subtly mention the statistical breakdown. That's a real winner.

He is the BoardTracker.

He tracks the Board.

That is all the information that you are allowed to access at this time.

Aye, it was pretty good. There is such as thing as road tax, drivers have to pay it an thats that.

Stop trying to use irony as an argument, it doesn't work for you well at all.

Wait you expect cyclists to break the law and ride on the pavement. Silly boy

I'm not using irony, just pointing out how you contradict yourself.

Do you even know how the roads infrastructure is funded in the UK? Do you know how local roads are funded, where the money comes from?

I've already explained about VED, which does not pay for the roads. I'm not typing it again. Suffice to say you're wrong.

Lawl, im sorry but parrot is correct about this. I think council tax pays for that sort of thing...although thats just a random guess :p

So I might be wrong on the finer details. Whoop!

I don't recall ever paying for VED or whatever in the post office. OK? :hmph:

You actually are using irony. And I didn't even contradict myself one bit. Posting an argument in the form of a statistical break down has nothing to do with a "holier-than-thou" attitude. Your ignorance is astounding.

My ignorance? Go and study up on what irony actually means, because it looks like you don't have a sodding clue. Basic contradiction (in which you refer to us as holier-than-thou, then proceed to boast about how you maintain the majority of English speakers) is not irony, and if you're referring to my use of sarcasm, then refer to it as sarcasm - it's a seperate derivative of verbal irony.

Actually it was in response to him not knowing it was true, so I provided reference to the facts. It has nothing to do with a holier-than-thou attitude, because we do not use it against you. It was merely pointed out because actual English people claim the language is theirs, when in reality there are far less of them than us who speak it.

Where I live, we had something like that happen but reverse. But no out of control vehicle.

A guy was so upset he had to share the road with the cyclist that he drove ahead, got out and beat him up. Talk about road rage.
The guy told the cyclist he should ride on sidewalks. Ha...Like the people walking on sidewalks would like a 20-30 mile per hour bike flying passed them. Besides the fact that bikes should ride on the street.

Drivers need to learn the rules of the road.

Don't be too fussy about the trivial difference between irony and sarcasm, they both characterize the same use of words, except sarcasm is intended to wound.

On Topic: The story was quite something and it must have been surprising to see that happening.

And actually, cyclists are more than allowed to use roads as their travel paths.
